        Influence of Routine Probiotic Supplementation on the Incidence of Necrotizing Enterocolitis and Late Onset Sepsis

        Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the influence of routine probiotic supplementation on causes of neonatal morbidity and mortality, such as necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) and late onset sepsis. Methods: All neonates born at <32 weeks of gestation and weighing <1,500 g admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit during the study period were included. The study period was divided into the pre-probiotic period, between January 2009 and February 2011, and the probiotic period, between November 2012 and December 2014. The probiotic given was a mixture of Lactobacillus plantarum, L. rhamnosus, Bifidobacterium lactis and B. longum, administered at the time of the first feeding over 2 mL once daily. Results: A total of 358 infants were screened for enrollment, with 149 infants included in the pre-probiotic group (mean birth weight 937 g, mean gestational age 27.9 wk), and 158 in the probiotic group (1,040 g, 28.6 wk). Probiotics had no statistically significant impact on NEC and late onset sepsis. However, three cases of probiotic related sepsis occurred after the infants were routinely administered probiotics in our unit. Conclusion: Routine probiotic supplementation did not reduce the incidence of NEC in very low birth weight (VLBW) infants. However, severe sepsis was caused by strains in the probiotic administered to patients. Therefore, routine prophylactic use of probiotic in VLBW infants should be performed cautiously.

        Study on Lamb wave propagation in a cracked plate using numerical simulations

        Most cracks do not grow straight due to the inhomogeneity of material properties. Furthermore, quantifying structural damage using Lamb waves is difficult due to uncertain crack shape. Here, we present a newly developed finite element model to simulate the propagation of Lamb waves in a cracked plate to quantify the influence of crack size and orientation on the characteristics of Lamb wave propagation. This model includes a piezoelectric actuator and sensor to generate and receive the tone-burst signals of Lamb wave. The damping coefficient of the finite element model was calibrated with the experimental data of plates without a crack. The Lamb wave propagation simulations were performed with various crack sizes, crack orientations, and distances between the actuator and sensor. Our model was utilized to investigate the influence of crack orientation on damage quantification based on the signal phase change and normalized amplitude. We successfully evaluated the effect of the incident angle of the crack, crack size, and distance between the sensors on the change of the plate wave signal characteristics. The signal characteristics obtained from our novel finite element model can be used to develop a quantification model to estimate the crack size, direction, and distance from the sensor.

        건강한 성인에게 가슴가동운동과 스트레칭운동이 최대들숨압 및 최대날숨압에 미치는 효과

        Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of chest mobilization and stretching exercises on maximal inspiratory pressure and maximal expiratory pressure in healthy adults who use computers for extended periods of time each day due to coronavirus disease 2019. Methods: Twenty-five healthy adults in their 20s and without respiratory disease (15 female, 10 male) took part in this study. Two types of thoracic mobilizing exercises using a Theraband and three types of stretching exercises using a foam roller were performed. Maximum inspiratory pressure and maximum expiratory pressure were measured three times each before and after the interventions. In terms of statistical methods, the maximum inspiratory pressure due to chest mobility and stretching was compared with the maximum expiratory pressure using parametric paired t-test and non-parametric Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Results: Maximum inspiratory pressure (p = .012) and maximum expiratory pressure (p = .006) showed significant differences before and after chest mobilization exercise and stretching among the participants. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that chest mobilization and stretching exercises are effective exercise methods for improving maximal inspiratory and expiratory pressure. They suggest that these exercises can prevent respiratory muscle weakness and improve aerobic fitness in healthy people as well as those in need of cardiorespiratory physiotherapy.

        Sex Determination used Sex Determining Region Y Gene on the Y-chromosome of Human Teeth

        최근 중합효소연쇄반응을 이용한 분자생물학적 유전자분석기술의 발달로 성염색체상의 유전좌위 증폭을 통한 성별감정이 활발히 이루어지고 있다. 그중 사람 Y염색체상에 존재하는 남성 고환의 형성을 유도하는 sex-determining region Y(SRY) gene이 규명되어 유전질환의 조기 발견이나 예방 및 태아의 성별판정 등에 응용되고 있다. 그러나, 치아는 외부 환경에 대한 저항성이 가장 높은 장기로 성별감정 등 법의치과학적 개인식별에 널리 이용되고 있음에도 불구하고, SRY 유전자를 이용하여 치아에서의 성별감정에 대한 연구는 시도된 바 없다. 따라서, 본 연구에서는 사람 치아에서 중합효소연쇄반응법을 이용한 SRY 유전자를 검출하여 성별판정에 용용하고자 하였다. 남녀 각각 20개 치아의 치수와 상아질에서 DNA를 추출하여 중합효소연쇄반응 을 시행하고 SRY 유전자를 검색한 결과, 남성에서는 치수 13개중 8개, 상아질 7개중 4개에서 SRY 유전자가 검출되었고, 여생에서는 검출되지 않았다. 이러한 결과는 중합효소연쇄반응법을 이용하여 사람 치아에서 SRY 유전자를 검색할 때, 남성판별에 유용하고 치아를 이용한 성별감정시 기존의 성별감정에 이용되고 있는 다른 유전자와 함께 SRY 유전자를 검색함으로써 성별감정의 신뢰도를 높힐 수 있을 것으로 사료된다.

        도착항공기 착륙순서에 관한 조언정보가 관제사 업무효율에 미치는 영향

        This paper describes the effect of advice information for arriving aircraft landing order on the air traffic controller's work efficiency. The air traffic control simulator used in the experiment was modeled on the basis of the aircraft parameters from BADA, gamma-command model and the 4-dimensional trajectory using the Bezier curve. The simulation results show that advice information was helpful for the performance of the work for users who did not have the air traffic control training. On the other hand, in case of users who have experience in air traffic control training, the work efficiency was lowered when the advisory information that does not reflect the user's intention is provided. Therefore, it can be seen that the effect of improving the work efficiency through advice information can be limited depending on the skill level of the air traffic controllers and the complexity of the air traffic situation.

        검색 속도와 메모리 효율 최적화를 위한 메타데이터 기반 데이터 구조 분석

        인공지능과 인터넷의 발전으로 인한 데이터의 증가로 데이터 관리의 중요성이 부각되고 있는 상황에서, 데이터 검색과 메모리 공간의 효율적 활용이 매우 중요한 시대가 도래하였다. 본 연구에서는 메타데이터를 기반으로 데이터 구조를 분석하여 검색 속도와 메모리 효율을 최적화하는 방안을 연구한다. 연구방법으로는 사진 이미지의 메타데이터를 활용하여 배열, 연결리스트, 딕셔너리, 이진 트리, 그래프의 데이터 구조에 대한 성능을 시간적, 공간적 복잡도를 중심으로 비교하고 분석하였다. 실험을 통해 대규모의 이미지 데이터를 다루는 상황에서 딕셔너리 구조는 수집속도에서, 그래프 구조는 검색 속도에서 가장 우수한 성능을 보여주는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 본 논문의 결과는 이미지 데이터 검색 속도와 메모리 효율을 최적화하기 위한 데이터 구조를 선택하는데 실용적인 가이드라인을 제시할 것으로 기대한다. As the amount of data increases due to the development of artificial intelligence and the Internet, data management is becoming increasingly important, and the efficient utilization of data retrieval and memory space is crucial. In this study, we investigate how to optimize search speed and memory efficiency by analyzing data structure based on metadata. As a research method, we compared and analyzed the performance of the array, association list, dictionary binary tree, and graph data structures using metadata of photographic images, focusing on temporal and space complexity. Through experimentation, it was confirmed that dictionary data structure performs best in collection speed and graph data structure performs best in search speed when dealing with large-scale image data. We expect the results of this paper to provide practical guidelines for selecting data structures to optimize search speed and memory efficiency for the images data.

        일부 식물성오일의 Streptococcus mutans와 Lactobacillus casei 성장에 미치는 영향

        Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the growth inhibitory effects of some vegetable oils on Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) and Lactobacillus casei (L. casei). Methods: Two bacterial strains and 5 kinds of test solutions (3 experimental groups: orange essential oil, olive oil, soybean oil; 1 positive control group: chlorhexidine solution; 1 negative control group: broth medium) were used in this study. S. mutans and L. casei pellets were exposed to 1 ml of one of the test solutions for 1 minute. Then, the treated bacterial cells were incubated in fresh broth medium for 0, 4, 8, 16, and 24 hours. The optical density of the broth medium was measured using an ELISA reader at 620 nm. A nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis test (with Mann-Whitney U tests) was performed to compare the change in optical density between different groups at different time points. Results: Bacterial growth was significantly inhibited in all experimental groups compared to the negative control group. The growth of L. casei was less affected by experimental oils than that of S. mutans. Orange essential oil had the maximum growth inhibitory effect on S. mutans up to 8 hours, similar to that in the positive control group (P<0.01). Experimental oils had greater growth inhibitory effect on L. casei than chlorhexidine solution. Conclusions: This in vitro study confirmed the growth inhibitory effect of some vegetable oils on S. mutans and L. casei. Rising of the mouth using these vegetable oils is expected to have an anti-plaque effect, but additional clinical studies are needed to confirm this.

        진주시 15세 청소년의 치주건강 상태

        Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the periodontal status of adolescents aged 15 years in Jinju city. Methods: The study subjects were 506 adolescents aged 15 years in Jinju city. We investigated the prevalence and severity of periodontal disease using the Community Periodontal Index (CPI) recommended by the WHO. Data on the frequency of daily tooth-brushing were collected through self-reported questionnaires. The information obtained on both the periodontal health status and frequency of daily toothbrushing of adolescents in Jinju city was compared with the data from the 6th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2013-2015 (KNHANES-VI). The software utilized in the analysis was SPSS version 23. Statistical significance was set at P<0.05. Results: The rate of healthy periodontal status in Jinju city was lower compared to KNHANES-VI (57.7% versus 63.7%). The rate of gingival bleeding in Jinju city and KNHANES-VI was 11.3% and 10.8%, respectively. The rate of calculus in Jinju city and KNHANES-VI was 31.0% and 25.6%, respectively. The rates of gingival bleeding and calculus were not significantly different between Jinju city and KNHANESVI. The healthy periodontal segments in Jinju city were more than those in KNHANES-VI (5.43 versus 5.25). The bleeding periodontal segments in Jinju city were less than those in KNHANES-VI (0.25 versus 0.45). However, the periodontal segments with calculus in Jinju city were not significantly different from those of KNHANES-VI (0.31 versus 0.30). The frequency of daily tooth-brushing in Jinju city was more than that in KNHANES-VI (2.67 versus 2.47). Conclusions: These findings suggest that appropriate oral health education should be widely conducted to promote periodontal health in adolescents.
