Purpose: To compare the outcomes of scleral buckling (SB) and primary pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) for treatment of simple rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RD). Methods: One hundred and fifteen Eyes undergoing SB or PPV for the treatment of simple rhegmatogenous RD were prospectively identified and followed up at least six months. Anatomic results, functional outcomes and complications were compared between eyes treated with SB and eyes treated with PPV. Results: We detected no significant differences in overall success rates or final vision quality between the two treatment groups. However, the final vision quality of pseudophakic patients treated with PPV was significantly better than the final vision quality of pseudophakic patients treated with SB. Two treatment goups experienced similar rates of intraocular pressure elevation and proliferative vitreoretinopathy development. In phakic patients, the rates of cataract progression were higher in patients treated with PPV than in patients treated with SB. Conclusions: PPV can be an effective method for the treatment of simple rhegmatogenous RD, and maybe considered as a viable alternative to SB for simple cases. However, in phakic patients treated with PPV, simultaneous or follow-up cataract surgery should be considered as adjuvant treatments. J Korean Ophthalmol Soc 2010;51(3):366-371

Purpose: To report the case of delayed suprachoroidal hemorrhage after Ahmed valve implantation in a neovascular glaucoma (NVG) patient. Case summary: A 74-years-old male visited the hospital with ocular pain in the left eye. He had a history of vitrectomy and Intraocular lens (IOL) scleral fixation due to trauma in the left eye. NVG was diagnosed and Ahmed valve was implanted in his left eye. Three days later, hypotony occurred with all quadrant choroidal detachment. Next day, raised intraocular pressure (IOP) was checked and anterior chamber was flat on slit lamp examination. Vitreous hemorrhage and suprachoroidal hemorrhage were suspected. We performed anterior chamber formation with viscoelastics. The anterior chamber became deeper and hemorrhage gradually decreased. A month later, the patient visited us with severe ocular pain. Raised IOP and shallow anterior chamber due to moderate hyphema and anteriorly placed IOL were found. Retinal detachment was suspected on B-scan. Vitrectomy, IOL removal, silicone oil insertion, and Ahmed valve removal were performed. Conclusions: We report we experienced one patient of delayed suprachoroidal hemorrhage after Ahmed valve implantation and he had poor prognosis. J Korean Ophthalmol Soc 2009;50(4):635-639

Magnetic properties and microstructures of FeTaNC thin films, which were deposited by magnetron reactive sputtering method, were investigated as a function of CH₄ and N₂ gas partial pressures. Magnetic properties of FeTaNC films were depended on total reactive gas pressures as well as CH₄/N₂ pressure ratios. For reactive gas partial pressures of 5 ∼ 10 %, optimum magnetic properties were observed in the FeTaNC films with proper CH₄/N₂ ratio. On the other hand, at 15% of gas partial pressure, FeTaN and FeTaC films showed superior properties to FeTaNC films. Above 15%, the magnetic properties of films rapidly degraded due to an excess incorporation of C and/or N atoms. Excellent soft magnetic properties of 17kG of Bs, 0.3 Oe of Hc, and 4000 of μ' (at 5 ㎒) were obtained in the FeTaNC films. The process windows of FeTaNC films which are showing good soft magnetic properties are larger than FeTa(N/C) films. High permeabilities of FeTaNC films could be explained by the Fe lattice distortion caused by N atoms, hence reduction of magnetic anisotopy. While precipitated TaN and TaC particles effectively supress the growth of α-Fe grains leading to a good soft magentic properties, FeN and FeC phases such as Fe3N, Fe4N, FexC have detrimental effects.

This experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of factors, such as incubation time, pH of medium and the sampling time from slaughter to incubation, on in vitro maturation of oocytes collected from ovarian follicles (3-5㎜ diameter) of the sows slaughtered at a processing plant. The results obtained were as follows : 1. Of 876 follicles, 434 oocytes could be harvested (49.5%). The oocytes were classified as $quot;Good$quot;, $quot;Fair$quot; and $quot;Poor$quot; depending morphological integrity and those were 17.7%, 65.2%o and 12.9% of the total oocytes harvested, respectively. Those classified as $quot;Good$quot; and $quot;Fair$quot; were utilized for incubation. 2. After 24 and 48 hours of incubation, the proportion of the oocytes matured to the second metaphase stage were 21% and 54.7%, respectively. 3. After 48 hours of incubation, the proportion of oocytes matured to the second metaphase stage in the medium which pH was adjusted to 6.70-6.99, 7.00-7.29 and 7.30-7.59 were 45.0%, 54.7%o and 55.0%, respectively. 4. The proportion of matured oocytes from follicles aspirated 1 hour and 2 hours after death of the donor were 54.7% and 42.1%, respectively.

Present study was designed to establish a biological assay for the evaluation of the fertilizing capacity of equine spermatozoa. Equine spermatozoa were washed in mTAPL and preincubated for 4 h at an atmosphere of 5% CO₂ in air at 37℃. In homologous interactions, hamster spermatozoa showed 97.4% of penetration into the oocyte with fully decondensed 1∼8 sperm heads per oocyte. Seventy two percent of activation was obtained in heterologous interaction containing equine spermatozoa and zona-free hamster oocytes. However no sign of sperm decondensation was found although activation of oocyte chromosomes was evident. In view of results so far achieved, hamster oocytes may be less penetrable to equine spermatozoa than other sources of spermatozoa. However, the fertilizing ability of equine spermatozoa could be measured by the oocyte activation using zona-free hamster oocyte.
