N/A To improve free-cutting property, fine Pb, Bi particles is necessary to be distributed evenly in Al-Cu alloy. The control of added element size and distribution are very difficult because of the insolubility and gravity segregation of Pb, Bi in the matrix. Therefore, in this study, mechanical stirring of the melt, inert gasbubbling, the addition of degasser are used for the fine distribution of Pb, Bi particles. The best distribution are obtained by stirring with 500 rpm for lOmin., Ar gas bubbling with 600㏄/min for 5min. and degassing with 0.8wt% degasser. As increasing cooling rate, fine grain size and finely dispersed particles were observed. The optimum pouring temperature was 650℃.

The effect of master alloy compositions on microstructure and particle distribution was investigated. The ribbon shape of Pb-50wt% Bi master alloy showed the best results. And Ti addition improved even distribution of Pb, Bi particles. Particles grown from L₂ phase were considered to be the Pb, Bi compound.

A study on the reduction of antimony trioxide by hydrogen was carried out to investigate the mechanism and kinetics of antimony trioxide. Possible mechanism for the reaction was discussed with the experimental kinetic data obtained in this investigation. The results obtained in this study are as follows: 1) The rate of reduction was increasing by raising the reaction temperature and hydrogen gas flow rate. 2) The overall reaction rate was controlled by the chemical reaction and the activation energy was about 39.0㎉/㏖. 3) Among the additives, PbO promotes the reduction rate of Sb_2O_3, but CaO and SiO_2 did not effect the reduction of Sb_2O_3 and CaO influenced the grain growth of Sb metal reduced.

The dependence of the high temperature ductility of Al-Mg-Ma alloy on temperature, strain rate and grain size has been examined in detail by means of tensile test. A + t a constant rate, reduction area versus temperature showed a remarkamle trouh. The ductility is not determined uniquely by a parameter Z=ε exp (Q/RT), where T is the gas constant and T the absolute temperature.

In order to clarify the deformation path dependence of flow stress in Al-Mg alloy at high-temperature deformation, the stress-strain curves are evaluated for different deformation paths at 573K. A method for theoretical prediction of flow stress along an arbitrary deformation path is developed to explain the deformation mechanism in solution hardened alloy at high temperature, and the theoretical stress-strain curves are compared with the experimental observation. The flow stress strongly depends on the deformation path.

Metals of low melting points are usually added to Al-Mg alloys in order to increase the machinability. These metals form eutectic compounds together with Mg, crystallized at grain boundaries. Low melting point mother alloys with three different shapes-wire, ribbon, and powder-having various particle sizes and surface areas were made by varying cooling rates and used to make Al-Mg alloys. The smaller the particle size of the powder was, the higher the size distribution of eutectic compounds was. Ribbons with medium size particles had the value of size distribution between the ones of wire and powder. It is thought that using wire-shaped mother alloys results in statisfactory machinability of Al-Mg alloys.

The present work was aimed to examine the variation of precipitations and mechanical properties by thermomechanical treatments(TMT) in Al-2.19wt%Li and Al-2.0wt%Li-0.11wt%Zr alloys. This study was perfomed by TEM, SEM observation, DSC, electrical resistance measurement, hardness and tensile strength measurment. First peak of resistivity aged at 90℃ was caused by precipitation of δ` -precursor phase, and second peak was caused by precipitation of δ` phase. According to this result, the precipitation process of Al-2.19wt%Li alloy was as follow : SSSS→δ` -precursor phase→δ`(Coherent→Semi-coherent)→δ In a Al-2.0wt%Li-0.11wt%Zr ternary alloy, the first peak of resistivity was appeared at initial aging heat-treatment. It is result from exsistant of δ` -precursor phase. The effect acceleration in a binary alloy was not appeared and the over-aging ternary alloy was accelerated with increase of the reduction rate. 1t is caused by combination effect of δ` and composite phase.
