In Henry James's The Portrait of a Lady(1881), Isabel Archer's return to Rome at the end attracted much controversy because the cause of her return is not fully explained in the novel. However, the major motive for her return is the result of her pledge to the people around her. More significantly, the pledge Isabel had made is closely linked to her sense of obligation, since she has preoccupied with the sanctities and solemnity of marriage to Gilbert Osmond. This sense of the pledge is accomplished by her total abandoning of the personal and practical advantages. For Isabel, marriage means a total commitment of one person to another and therefore is to be regarded as indissoluble. Isabel's devotion to Osmond accounts for her moral consistency not from reasoning, but from her sense of duty as a married woman. Isabel does not change her attitude toward Osmond even after she comes to know the conspiracy and malignity of her husband and Madame Merle. Her acceptance of destiny can be seen as a moral superiority to these people who have so calculatingly exploited her. Isabel's action in the end, then, is seen to be fully consistent with what she did earlier. Because she was preoccupied with her ideal of freedom and independence, her marriage to Osmond was made through her own decision, bearing all responsibilities for herself. And when Isabel knows that her husband is the reverse of what she thought he would be, she does not flee from her own decisions because her moral notion makes her unable to abandon the consequences of her actions. Along with this, Isabel's return to Rome is considered as James's scheme of showing how his heroine cannot be destroyed despite the flaw of her character. Indeed, James has much interest in the survival of the heroine in terms of morality in the fact that the innocent character is not morally corrupted in the midst of the complicated world. Consequently, in her full knowedge of the world, Isabel asserts her morality and is never defeated.

Character has been a crucial concept in the discussion of the novel because the novel is intrinsically related to the portrayal of characters. Although character has an interaction with other elements of the novel such as plot, point of view, and setting, it exists independent of the structure of the novel. Unlike other elements of the novel that have a distinct function inside the structure of the novel, character has its validity in relation to the reader as it works in the consciousness of the reader. Given the importance of character, however, character has received little attention so far since many people believed that the concern for character itself does not lead to the disclosure of what the novel tries to convey. As it turns out, character in the novel becomes a field where the meaning of the novel is presented and our belief in and sympathy with the world are intensified. Thus it is through the contact with characters that the readers come to know more directly the meaning of our existence in the world. The search for the value of character is and will be an essential effort if the readers want to interpret their acts in the struggle of daily life.
사방지(砂防地) 식생천이(植生遷移)와 토양변화에 관한 연구(중부 화강암지대를 중심으로)

砂防地의 管理指針을 提示하기 위하여 零州, 利川, 楊州, 抱川地域에서 砂防地의 植生遷移와 土壤變化 等, 現 實態를 調査한 바, 施工年次가 經過됨에 따라 다음과 같이 變化하였다. (1) 優占種 變化 施工 5年 : 오리나무類, 아까시나무, 리기다소나무 順에서 施工 10年 : 오리나무類, 리가다소나무, 소나무, 참나무類 順으로 施工 15年 : 새, 솔새, 개솔새 順에서 施工 20年 : 새, 기름새, 산기울 順으로 되었다. (2) 施工 20年이 經過하면 平均落葉尸의 깊이는 3.5㎝, 平均土深(C₃ 尸包含)은 28㎝까지 形成되있다. (3) 施工年次가 經過됨에 따라 有效燐酸含量은 減少되며, 粘土含量, 有機物含量, 置換性鹽基, 陽이온 置換容量 等은 增加되었다.
Simple Rib Tuck 편포의 칫수특성에 관한 연구(I) ―Half-Cardigan 편포에 대하여―

In this study, the dimensional properties of half cardigan knitted fabrics were investigated in relaxation. Acrylics, cotton/ramie, and cotton were used for specimen knitting. SCSL(structural cell stitch length), course density, rib density, stitch density, thickness of sample fabrics were measured in dry-, wet-, oven-, relaxed states. And CF, MFT, demensional constants K1 were caculated. The difference of thickness in half cardigan knitted from cotton was strikingly larger than that of half cardigan fabrics knitted from acrylic, cotton/ramie yarns. In fully relaxed states, area shrinkage ratio of fabrics knitted from cotton/ramie, cotton were about 15%, 22% respectively. Values of K1-4 under fully-relaxed state were as follows.

Since Aristoltle there have been a great deal of arguments over the role of plot. The plot becomes the base of the narrative--the very reason for which a narrative work exists, that is, the menas by which a narrative work conveys its meaning. As a controversial literary subject, the plot has been discussed especially in fiction since the exploration of its nature is directly related not only to the form, but to the content of fiction. An organizing and unifying principle of fiction, the plot had different meanings in the twentieth century. Many writers nowadays are using the plot in the different sense in order to enhance the effect of their work. thus the interpretation of fiction today involves the role of the plot. My aim in this article is to explore the nature of the plot in order to know that the crisis of fiction or narrative comes from the changing concept of the plot.
