        Hollow fiber enzyme reactor has evolved as a spin-off of the rapidly developing membrane technologies. Hollow fiber module is now favorably considered as enzyme reactor, artificial kidney, ultrafiltration device, reverse osmosis device, and gas separator due to its high area-to-volume compared with other membrane modules such as flat or spiral modules. However, when an enzyme is immobilized in a sponge annulus, an ultrafiltration causes washout of the enzyme from the sponge annulus to result in a nonuniform distribution along the fiber. Thus, utilization of the retained enzyme is not adequate. However, this problem can be solved by recirculating the enzyme solution in the shell side, and also mass transfer resistance can be reduced by introducing the ultrafiltration. In this paper, the continuous system with recirculated enzyme solution was modeled. The numerical results were in good agreements with those of experiment. When Thiele modulus of the porous sponge region is less than 1, reaction occurs also in the shell side.

      • 도시 하수오니에 의한 고분자 물질의 생분해도 측정

        Factors influencing the biodegradability of polymer materials by municipal sewage sludge were studied using starch, polyethylene glycol(PEG) and polyvinyl alcohol(PVA). The degree of biodegradability was determined by measuring evolved carbon dioxide as a function of time, when the polymer material is exposed to activated sewage sludge. The biodegradability of starch reached around 70% and 40% after 30day incubation in summer and autumn, respectively. This is caused by the activity of microorganism and incubation temperature. The biodegradability of PEG 8000 and PVA was 1/7 and 1/14 of starch, respectively. Biodegradation of PEG 8000 after 30 day incubation in summer was slightly higher than that in spring while lag phase was significantly longer in spring. This shows that the activity of microorganism as well as incubation temperature is important for biodegradation.

        Hollow fiber membrane devices have been used as enzyme reactors because of their large surface area-volume ratio and the advantage of immobilized soluble enzymes in intact form. Theoretical analysis of the hollow fiber enzyme reactor with recirculated enzyme solution was performed and the model equations were numerically solved in previous paper. For a slow kinetics one might assume that the flowing substrate solution has radially uniform concentration profile. In this paper, the equations were solved analytically with the above assumption in the case of 1st and zero order reaction, and the approximate analytical solutions were compared with the exact numerical solutions. Exact numerical solutions of shell side concentration and of the outlet concentration at low Pe'clet number were in good agreement with the approximate analytical solutions. And the two solutions of outlet concentration at high Pe'clet number were agreed, when the Thiele modulus was small.

        Posterior silk glands of Bombyx mori were cultured for the in vitro production of silk fibroin. Four-day-old fifth-instar larvae and Grace's media with or without silkworm hemolymph were used for experiments. With the addition of silkworm hemolymph, significant increase in the secretion of fibroin from the lumen to the outside of the gland was observed and total amount of fibroin increased by 14%. Most of the fibroin produced in the media was insoluble protein. Total amount of fibroin reached a plateau in 24 day culture without the addition of silkworm hemolymph, whereas it increased continuously in the medium supplemented with silkworm hemolymph.

        Uncoupling of the cell growth from the production of an inducible substance gives higher performance, and two-stage continuous operation allows one to separate the cell growth from the product induction. Residence time of each individual cell in the second tank is important since the extent of the induction is dependent on the residence time of the cell in the second tank and keeps the cell to stay long enough for the product induction. The effect of cell recycle on the residence time in two-stage continuous operation has been theoretically analyzed. The cell recycle system increases the mean intracellular concentration by the increment of the mean residence time of the cell. Higher recycle ratio and lower separation parameter give longer mean residence time. Optimum dilution rate exists for the maximum productivity.

        Cell recycle has been used in fermentation and most of the previous works were concerned with increasing the cell concintration. Other utilities of cell recycle chemostat are considered in this article. Steady state should be changed from one to another in the experiment for the evaluation of kinetic parameters. In this case, the recylce system reduces the transient period between two steady states. The effect of cell recycle on the trasient period in single-stage continuous operation is theoretically analyzed. Dilution rate or another parameter, r, can be varied to get other steady states. The result shows that change of the dilution rate rather than r gives shorter transient period. For the same specific growth rate, combination of higer dilution rate and lower r gives shorter transient period.

        This study is from March 1st, of 1988 to September 31, 1988. The subjects of study consists of students in general who are in attendance at university and all samples are selected at random. The total number of subjects counts to 187(sports man : 56, College students : 131) and the researcher measures and analyses the subjects' physique, physical strength, the test of dominance eye, the functional tests of hand, foot, body and eye. The results as follows : 1. Physical growth and development Mean values of body height are 177.19±5.01㎝ for sports man and 173.3±0.46㎝ for college student and superior to standard value of Korean. Mean values of body weight are 69.6.±6.17㎏ for sports man and 66.1±1.68㎏ for college student, and the mean values of chest girth are 91.86±4.83㎝ and 94.1±1.53㎝. Mean values of sitting height are 93.0±4.28㎝ and 93.3±1.05㎝. 2. Physical fitness Mean values of grin strength are 41.6±4.3 for right side and 44.0±6.0 for left side in sports man and 44.2±1.4 for right and 46.3±1.7 for left in college student. Mean values of arm strength are 29.7±3.9 for right and 31.8±2.9 for left in sports man 25.±1.4 or right and 28.7±1.9 for left in college student. Mean values of leg strength are 38.4±5.8 for right and 43.8±6.1 for left in sports man and 43.5±1.8 for right and 44.2±1.1 for left in college student. 3. Functional rate of foot, trunk, eye and hand As considered according to its functions, the rates of right foot, left foot, both of feet in both of the sports man and college student, total rates are each of 83.3%, 16.7%, 2.4% for sports man and 53.7%, 39.0%, 2.6% for college student. The rates of right side, left side, both of sides in both of the sports man and college student, the total rates are each of 53.3%, 37.4%, 6.7% for sports man and 39.1%, 46.1%, 5.1% for college student. The rates of right eye, left eye, both of eyes in both of the sports man and college student, the total rates are each of 53.6%, 31.7%, 4.1% for sports man and 53.3%, 20.8%, 22.7% for college student. The rates of right hand, left hand, both of hands in both of the sports man and college student, the total rates are each of 67.5%, 21.8%, 5.2% for sports man and 84.5%, 10.4%, 2.2% for college student, respectively. 4. Tests of dominance eye As considered according to tests of dominance eye, the results of right eye, left eye in both sports man and college student, results are each of 62.5%, 37.5% for sports man and 70.2%, 29.8% for college students, 67.9%, 32.1% for the total of sports man and college student, respectively.

      • 효소 및 추출을 이용한 전분이 함유된 고분자 필름의 생분해도 측정

        Various methods were proposed for the measurement of biodegradability of polymer materials by American Society for Testing and Materials(ASTM). In those methods, carbon dioxide evolution, oxygen consumption, and the weight loss of polymer are measured for the evaluation of biodegadability when microorganisms grow by using the polymer material as the only carbon source. Since a month or longer time is needed to measure the quantities, a rapid quantitative mathod is required to be developed. We used α-amylase for determining the biodegradability of starch-filled polyethylene film: however, the enzyme reaction was so slow. Further studies on the reaction conditions are necessary for the rapid completion of the reaction. Therefore, starch content in the film was measured for the evaluation of biodegradability on the assumption that starch is a perfect biodegradable material. NaOH solution was used for the extraction of starch from the film and the weight loss of the film was measured.

        뇌동맥류 수술환자의 정신신경학적 분석

        The mortality rate of aneurysmal surgery had recently been reduced remarkably due to mordern microsurgical technique and refinement of the timing of operation. Despite recovery without neurological deficits, many patients remain with emotional and psychological sequelae postoperatively. We evaluated 33 patients, operated on intracranial aneurysm for recent 2 years, about quality of life and degree of cognitive function. For proper evaluation of outcome of aneurysmal surgery, in addition to the neurological outcome, psychological aspects must be considered.
