      • The Alchemist: 작가와 등장인물들간의 관계

박순필 한양대학교 셰익스피어 연구회 1996 The Hanyang Shakespeare Studies Vol.5 No.-

Ben Jonson must have been one of the writers who reveal themselves, the author, in their works. he tries to express and write down his own thoughts about the basic desires and folly of man not only in the prologue or conclusive part of his plays but also through the mouths of his characters. So the audience or the reader can find "Jonson" among his characters. Some of the characters can be regarded as the spokesmen fo Jonson; other characters shear the function of "poet" with Jonson. if we examine the characters with whom Jonson shares his function, we can understand and enjoy his works more properly and effectively. Therefore a study to examine "poet" in The alchemist is undertaken in this paper. Unlike his previous works which are concerned with upper-class people, in The Alchemist Jonson deals with various kinds of people in a cross-section of society led by greed and lust to folly and loss. Among the deceived and the deceivers in this play, the characters who join "poet" are Face, Subtle and Lovewit. Face has precise insight into the avarice of man and all human beings, dissatisfaction toward their present selves. He also prepares a new world of illusion for his prey. He plays the role of creator just like poet does. subtle, like Marlowe's Faustus, is ambitious in the Renaissance who tries to reach beyond his limits as a man. Lovewit stands in the most suitable place to be Jonson's poet. Furthermore, he has the intelligence and judgement to grasp the whole situation and to discern the right from the wrong. Although all of these three chracters have the chracteristics of poet, Face and Subtle abuse their talents to manipulate or to deceive the others and Lovewit remains who is more interested in himself than in public justice. In The Alchemist Jonson chooses nobody as his spokesman and he gives none of the characters the role of "poet."

      • Ben Jonson의 Comedy와 Volpone의 파멸의 원인

박순필 한양대학교 셰익스피어 연구회 1995 The Hanyang Shakespeare Studies Vol.4 No.-

If Ben Jonson's works are compared with Shakespeare's, it is obvious that he had different conception of comedy and adopted his own way in dealing with it. he thought the purpose of comedy was to indicate the human fault and to correct it. So he chose the dark, gloomy side of human being. At the same time he wanted to raise the standard of common Elizabethan comedy and tried to treat it seriously. even though his works lack the variety and the universality of Shakespeare's works both in the theme and the form, they give us a chance not to feel but to think. Volpone is one of the representative plays dealt with human greed and Volpone has been accepted as a perfect symbol of avarice but in this paper a little different approach to him is suggested. All of the major characters in the play must be regarded as fools filled with controllable desire for money but Volpone never aims at money. for him money is a mere sign of his superior intellect. the cause of his fall is not desire for money but his pride and over self-confidence. In Volpone Jonson teaches us the destructive power of misleaded pride and false self-confidence.

We report a case of disseminated calcific cysticercosis of brain, accompanied with marked hydrocephalus. Histopathologically, the calcific spots consisted of mummified scolex and bladder of cysticercus cellulosae with a diffuse calcification, but no area of cystic change were noted. Surrounding brain tissue showed a dense fibrous reaction and gliosis with little foreign body reaction.

The diagnosis of retroorbital tumor is at times difficult and the decision as to the best surgical approach to orbital tumors is often difficult. The rapid development of diagnostic radiologic procedures has provided a means of more precisely defining the nature and extent of the lesion and with the advent of microsurgical techniques, they could allow safe access to the orbit transcranially. The advantage of the transcranial approach to orbital tumors is apparent for disease processes that arise in or extend to the intracranial cavity, and superior access to the apical portion of the optic nerve and to the medial and lateral superior quadrants of the orbit. Furthermore, good functional and cosmetic outcome is possible. The authors had experienced good results of transcranial approach in 15 cases of retroorbital tumors.

        볼포네의 성격 분석

        박순필(Soonpil Park) 한국셰익스피어학회 2016 셰익스피어 비평 Vol.52 No.2

Volpone is one of the representative plays revealing human greed and Volpone has been accepted as a perfect symbol of avarice but in this paper a little different approach to him is suggested. Vopone is a smart, imaginative, creative, and proud aristocrat. However, despite all of these positive qualities, it is true that there has been excessive focus only on his greed. All of the major characters in the play must be regarded as fools filled with uncontrollable desire for money but Volpone must not be treated as one more greedy man. He never aims at money. For him, the wealth means the secondary trophy gained from displaying of his intellect and manipulating the others. In this context, he must not be analyzed as the embodiment of avarice. With too much emphasis on his greed, Volpone might look so simple like a caricature symbolizing avarice but in fact he is a man with remarkable and excellent personal traits. First of all, Jonson gives him high intelligence and insight which make him able to penetrate the frailties of human nature and do not allow him to delude himself. This mental power is an important aspect which should not be overlooked in understanding Volpone. Next, he possesses the great imagination and creativity to build a new world for others and perform various roles for himself. Like an energetic artist, he creates what he wants by using his imagination and creativity. Finally, most of all, he is a man of pride and arrogance. The fact that Volpone is full of pride in himself and believes in his power to control over his world is an essential part of his character. Therefore, his pride forces him to choose the perfect defeat instead of hurting his pride. Money for Volpone is no more important than for anyone else. To understand him objectively, it is necessary to identify positive or powerful traits in him without prejudice.

The mortality rate of aneurysmal surgery had recently been reduced remarkably due to mordern microsurgical technique and refinement of the timing of operation. Despite recovery without neurological deficits, many patients remain with emotional and psychological sequelae postoperatively. We evaluated 33 patients, operated on intracranial aneurysm for recent 2 years, about quality of life and degree of cognitive function. For proper evaluation of outcome of aneurysmal surgery, in addition to the neurological outcome, psychological aspects must be considered.

뇌동맥류 수술시 Fenestrated Clip의 사용에 대하여 : Report of Four Cases

이익모,박순필,김상진,도종웅 대한신경외과학회 1988 Journal of Korean neurosurgical society Vol.17 No.5

Some aneurysms with peculiar shapes, large sized or in unusual location cannot be obliterated by ordinary methods. We present four cases using two kinds of fenestrated clips. There were 4 aneurysms in the 4 patients : 3 saccular and 1 fusiform aneurysm. Two aneurysms were located in anterior communicating artery, one left carotico-opthalmic artery, and one distal middle cerebral artery. All of the aneurysms were successfully obliterated. Our results suggest that the various shape of fenestrated clips may be benefit for clipping difficult aneurysms, which would not be clipped with ordinary one.
