Self-consistent Calculations of the Effects of Disorder in d-wave and s-wave Superconductors

The kernel polynomial method, as an approach to deriving highly-accurate spectral properties oflarge sparse matrices, is extended to investigate the effects of disorder in two-dimensional inhomogeneoussuperconductors. Being able to solve the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations for quite largesquare lattices self-consistently, we gain new microscopic insights and make intuitive observationsof the localization of low-energy quasiparticles on the nanometer scale. We also compare the behaviorsof the optical conductivities of superconductors with different pairing symmetries. We findthat the Drude weight turns out to be finite only for the weakly-disordered d-wave superconductorwhile obvious suppression of the optical conductivity in the infrared range can be observed in thedisordered s-wave superconductor.
FCP 15 : A case of extranodal NK/T cell Lymphoma mimicking refractory Behcet`s disease

A 39-year-old female was diagnosed with complete type Behcet’s disease (BD) having symptoms of oral ulcer, genital ulcer, uveitis and erythema nodosum-like skin lesions. Colchicine, azathioprine or mycophenolate mofetil and systemic corticosteroid were prescribed to reduce the symptoms. However, active uveitis and cutaneous lesions persisted despite treatment. Under suspicious lung involvement of BD, infliximab was started to lessen systemic inflammation yet wihout much effect. Subsequent lung biopsy to investigate pulmonary infiltrate revealed opportunistic infection by Pneumocystis jiroveci. After stopping infliximab infusion, prednisolone in 1mg/kg/day dose was maintained with other immunosuppressants. Surprisingly, cytological specimen from palliative surgery to improve visual acuity discovered a concurrent involvement of vitreoretinal large cell lymphoma. Additional biopsy performed on hard palate ulceration which initially thought to be a symptom of BD revealed unexpected extranodal NK/T cell lymphoma involvement, and retrospective review of pathological slides of skin also revealed the presence of lymphoma. BD should be always suspected of its final diagnosis when systemic vasculitic inflammation persists without any plausible cause. If symptoms are not alleviated even with intense systemic treatments, other suspicious diagnosis including malignancy should be doubted in practice.

Purpose Current variability in methods for tumor mutational burden (TMB) estimation and reporting demonstrates the urgent need for a homogeneous TMB assessment approach. Here, we compared TMB distributions in different cancer types using two customized targeted panels commonly used in clinical practice. Materials and Methods TMB spectra of 295- and 1021-gene panels in multiple cancer types were compared using targeted next-generation sequencing (NGS). The TMB distributions across a diverse cohort of 2,332 cancer cases were then investigated for their associations with clinical features. Treatment response data were collected for 222 patients who received immune-checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) and their homologous recombination DNA damage repair (HR-DDR) and programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression were additionally assessed and compared with the TMB and response rate. Results The median TMB between gene panels was similar despite a wide range in TMB values. The highest TMB was eight and 10 in patients with squamous cell carcinoma and esophageal carcinoma according to the classification of histopathology and cancer types, respectively. Twenty-three out of 103 patients (22.3%) were HR-DDR–positive and could benefit from ICI therapy; out of those 23 patients, seven patients had high TMB (p=0.004). Additionally, PD-L1 expression was not associated with TMB or treatment response among patients receiving ICIs. Conclusion Targeted NGS assays demonstrated the ability to evaluate TMB in pan-cancer samples as a tool to predict response to ICIs. In addition, TMB integrated with HR-DDR–positive status could be a significant biomarker for predicting ICI response in patients.

Background: Among the various ginseng strains, Shizhu ginseng is endemic to China, mainly distributed in Kuandian Manchu Autonomous County (Liaoning Province, China); however, not much is known about the compounds (especially saponins) in Shizhu ginseng. Methods: A rapid, sensitive, and reliable ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled with MS/MS (UHPLCeMS/MS) method was developed to separate and identify saponins in Shizhu ginseng. Results: The separation was carried out on a Waters ACQUITY UPLC BEH C18 column (100 mm × 2.1 mm, 1.7 ㎛) with acetonitrile and 0.1% formic acid aqueous solution as the mobile phase under a gradient elution at 40℃. The detection was performed on a Micromass Quattro Micro API mass spectrometer equipped with electrospray ionization source in both positive and negative modes. Under the optimized conditions, a total of 31 saponins were identified or tentatively characterized by comparing retention time and MS data with related literatures and reference substances. Conclusion: The developed UHPLCeMS/MS method was suitable for identifying and characterizing the chemical constituents in Shizhu ginseng, which provided a helpful chemical basis for further research on Shizhu ginseng.

This study is on how ohmic area etching affects the buffer breakdown voltage of AlGaN/GaN HEMT. The surface morphology of the ohmic metal can be improved by whole etching on the ohmic area. The buffer breakdown voltages of the samples with whole etching on the ohmic area were improved by the suppression of the metal spikes formed under the ohmic contact regions during high-temperature annealing. The samples with selective etching on the ohmic area were investigated for comparison. In addition, the buffer leakage currents were measured on the different radii of the wafer, and the uniformity of the buffer leakage currents on the wafer were investigated by PL mapping measurement.

DEPDC1 is a recently identified novel tumor-related gene that is upregulated in several types of cancer and contributes to tumorigenesis. In this study, we have investigated the expression pattern and functional implications of DEPDC1 during cell cycle progression. Expression studies using synchronized cells demonstrated that DEPDC1 is highly expressed in the mitotic phase of the cell cycle. Immunofluorescence assays showed that DEPDC1 is predominantly localized in the nucleus during interphase and is redistributed into the whole cell upon nuclear membrane breakdown in metaphase. Subsequently, siRNA-mediated knockdown of DEPDC1 caused a significant mitotic arrest. Moreover, knockdown of DEPDC1 resulted in remarkable mitotic defects such as abnormal multiple nuclei and multipolar spindle structures accompanied by the upregulation of the A20 gene as well as several cell cycle-related genes such as CCNB1 and CCNB2. Taken together, our current observations strongly suggest that this novel cancerous gene, DEPDC1, plays a pivotal role in the regulation of proper mitotic progression. Identification of the gene(s) responsible for floweringtime in Arabidopsis has significant implications. We used theT-DNA insertion library of Arabidopsis thaliana to screen anearly-flowering mutant that exhibits accelerated floweringunder short-day conditions. AP22.65, a novel flowering-timegene in that species, was isolated and identified via genomewalkingand bioinformatics analysis. The flowering time ofAP22.65-complementing plants was similar to that of theCol-0 wild type (WT). Conversely, its overexpression delayedflowering. Consistent with this phenotype, expression ofAP22.65 was decreased in the ap22.65-1 mutant, recoveredin AP22.65-complementing plants, and increased in AP22.65-overexpressing plants. Compared with the WT, expressionlevels of critical genes in different flowering pathways, i.e.,SPY, FLC, GI, CO, FT, and LFY, were down-regulated inloss-of-function mutants. Expression of AP22.65 was distributedin flowers, siliques, rosette leaves, and whole seedlings. Therefore, this gene may be a negative regulator of Arabidopsisflowering.

Purpose: To investigate the prevalence of spina bifida occulta (SBO) and its relationship with the presence of overactive bladder (OAB) in middle-aged and elderly people in China. Methods: A cross-sectional community-based survey was carried out at 7 communities in Zhengzhou City, China from December 15, 2013 to June 10, 2014, where residents aged over 40 years were randomly selected to participate. All of the participants underwent lumbosacral radiographic analysis and relevant laboratory tests. A questionnaire including basic information, past medical history and present illness, and the OAB symptom score was filled out by all participants. Chi-square tests and logistic regression were used for data analysis with a P-value of <0.05 denoting statistical significance. Results: A total of 1,061 subjects were qualified for the final statistical analysis (58.8±11.7 years; male, 471 [44.4%]; female, 590 [55.6%]). The overall prevalence of SBO was 15.1% (160 of 1,061): 18.3% (86 of 471) in men and 12.5% (74 of 590) in women. Among these subjects, 13.7% (145 of 1,061) had OAB: 13.2% (62 of 471) in men and 14.1% (83 of 590) in women. The results of logistic regression showed that age, SBO, history of cerebral infarction (HCI), and constipation were risk factors for OAB (P<0.05), while sex, history of childhood enuresis (HCE), body mass index (BMI), and diabetes mellitus (DM) were not (P>0.05). In men, age, SBO, and constipation were risk factors for OAB (P<0.05), while HCE, BMI, DM, HCI, and benign prostate hyperplasia were not (P>0.05). In women, age, SBO, and HCI were risk factors for OAB (P<0.05), while HCE, BMI, DM, vaginal delivery, and constipation were not (P>0.05). Conclusions: The prevalence of SBO is high and it is related to OAB in middle-aged and elderly people in China.
