EVOH-based nanocomposites prepared by simple saponification method

<P> The nanocomposite powders of poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol)/Na<SUP>+</SUP>-montmorillonite (EVOH/MMT) and EVOH/Loess were prepared by a solution-precipitation and saponification method. EVA/toluene/nanoclay suspensions were precipitated and saponified in ethanol/KOH solution in a heterogeneous manner. Tensile properties, morphology, and thermal behavior of the prepared nanocomposites have been evaluated using UTM, SEM, and DSC, respectively. The tensile strength and elongation at break of EVA/MMT-50% and EVA/Loess-50% nanocomposites were significantly increased up to 1 h saponification time and thereafter gradually decreased. At 1 h saponification time, the tensile strength of EVA/ Loess-50% nanocomposite was increased by 5.4-fold to 14.7 MPa, whereas EVA/MMT-50% increased the tensile strength by 2.2-fold to 10.4 MPa compared to the un-saponified one. With the increase in saponification time, melting and crystallization peak temperature of both nanocomposites was shifted at a higher temperature. The antibacterial activity of saponified EVA/MMT-50% and EVA/Loess-50% powders was also determined by shake flask test against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli). Among the nanocomposites used in this study, EVA/MMT-50%-6 h exhibited strong antibacterial activity against the two kinds of bacteria. </P>

Background : At present, epidural steroid injection is one of the most frequently used methods in the treatment for low back pain.. But this method is nonspecific and results in a widespread of injected agent around the target point. Therefore we thought direct injection to the nerve root is more specific and effective. Methods : The authors evaluated the effects of lumbar paravertebral steroid injection in 39 patients with low back pain and radicular pain, retrospectively. We used triamcinolone 40mg(1ml) and 0.25% bupivacaine 3ml as injection agents and used pain relief scale(PRS) score for assessment of the effect. Results : One week after injection, the patients of PRS score less than 5 were 65% in spinal stenosis and 85% in herniated intervertebral disc(HIVD). The patients of effective response more than 4 weeks after injection were 48% in spinal stenosis and 68% in HIVD, more than 12 weeks were 22% and 38%, respectively. The patients of PRS score less than 5 were 45% at the time of follow-up study. Conclusions : We think paravertebral steroid injection is effective in patients with low back pain and radicular pain. Therefore, this technique could be alternative method to epidural steroid injection. (Korean J Anesthesiol 1997; 32: 110∼115)

Nanosized surface structures of Cu powders were investigated at the atomic scale by field-emission transmission electron microscope techniques. The nanoscale surface oxide layer on the Cu powder was analyzed to be the CU2O phase by electron diffraction pattern and electron energy-loss spectroscopy. In addition, it was found from high-resolution transmission electron microscopy study that there are formed no surface oxide layers on the surface of alkanethiol coated Cu powders.

N/ABackground : Intraperitoneal hyperthermic perfusion (IPHP) has been introduced in clinical practice to improve the survival of cancer patients. But despite of this advantage, postoperative hepatic dysfunction may occur more severely after IPHP than general anesthesia. The protective mechanism of liver is destroyed by hyperthermia as the result. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of intraperitoneal hyperthermic perfusion on the postoperative liver function in cancer patients. Methods : Sixty patients with ovarian cancer were divided into two groups; 30 patients undergone only radical hysterectomy(control group), and 30 patients undergone radical hysterectomy combined with IPHP(IPHP group). Anesthesia was performed with enflurane-N2O-O2 in both groups. Serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase(SGOT), serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase(SGPT) and albumin levels were evaluated before anesthesia, 1, 3, 5, 7, 10 and 14th days after surgery on both groups. Results : Postoperative SGOT levels were increased on 1, 3, 5, 7, 10 and 14th days in both groups, and on 1, 3 and 5 days postoperatively were increased more significantly in IPHP group than control group, but there were no significant difference between both groups after post-operative 7 days. SGPT levels were increased more significantly on 1, 3 and 5 days postoperatively in IPHP group than control group. Albumin levels were decreased more significantly on 1 and 3 days postoperatively in IPHP group than control group. Conclusion : We consider that postoperative liver function in cancer patients is influenced by the intraperitoneal hyperthermic perfusion. (Korean J Anesthesiol 1998; 34: 1014∼1020)
