      • Multidisciplinary Approach to Breast Cancer Care

Juon, Hee-Soon The Research Institute of Nursing Science Seoul Na 2007 간호학의 지평 Vol.4 No.1

Aim: The purpose of this paper is to present the importance of multidisciplinary strategies in cancer prevention and control, especially comprehensive breast cancer care. Background: Worldwide, breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed among women and is the leading cause of cancer deaths. Although the incidence of breast cancer in Asian countries is still lower than in Western countries, the rate of increase for the last two decades is striking. Methods: Data on cancer mortality, incidence, and risk factors were summarized by using the most recent data available from population-based cancer registries affiliated with the International Union Against Cancer, the National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program and the CDC's National Program of Cancer Registries (NPCR). Results: Global differences in breast cancer incidence and fluctuations in rates within a country still exist. The incidence of breast cancer in Asian countries was lower than in Western countries. Breast cancer incidence in the United States decreased each year during 1999-2003. On the other hand, morbidity and mortality related to breast cancer in Asia has increased significantly. Conclusion: Multidisciplinary strategies to reduce breast cancer mortality and promote breast cancer awareness are addressed. Lessons learned from multidisciplinary approaches to cancer treatment and control will be valuable in implementing future breast cancer research in the fields of basic, clinical, and population research in Asia.

Informational Needs of Korean Women with Breast Cancer: Cross-Cultural Adaptation of the Toronto Informational Needs Questionnaire of Breast Cancer

        이명선,송미령,이정림,Hee-Soon Juon,노동영,조주희 한국간호과학회 2007 Asian Nursing Research Vol.1 No.3

Purpose The purpose of this study was to adopt an instrument suitable for assessing the informational needs of Korean women with breast cancer. Methods This was a cross-cultural adaptation into Korean and quantitative validation of the 52-item Toronto Informational Needs Questionnaire of Breast Cancer (TINQ-BC). In the validation phase, we assessed the psychometric properties of the instrument in a cross-sectional survey of 164 Korean women with breast cancer participating in self-support groups. Results Construct and content validity of the instrument was established. Internal consistency using Cronbach’s alpha was .97. Using confirmatory factor analysis, factor loadings ranging from .54 to .87 were obtained and considered satisfactory. All 52 items of the TINQ-BC were found to be effective at measuring the informational needs of Korean women with breast cancer. According to the adapted scale, the Korean Informational Needs Questionnaire of Breast Cancer, the informational needs of Korean women with breast cancer were high, with a mean total score of 203.61 (standard deviation, 34.43; range, 109–255). Conclusion The TINQ-BC, developed and tested in Canada, was adapted and successfully utilized in this study in Korea, indicating that it has the potential to assess the informational needs of women with breast cancer on an international basis. Health care professionals must be aware of the domains of information that these women perceive to be important so that educational interventions can be effectively planned and executed.

한국 청소년의 자살기도에 관한 역학적 연구

남정자 ( Jung Ja Nam ),전희순 ( Hee Soon Juon ),( Margaret E. Ensminger ) 한국보건사회연구원 1992 保健社會硏究 Vol.12 No.1

We examined the prevalence of self-reported suicide attempts and the relationship between suicide attempts and background characteristics, social integration, stress at school, psychological distress, and suicidal thoughts in a nationally representative sample of Korean adolescents. As part of the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs` Adoles-cent Health Survey data were collected from 5,209 eighth graders and 4,677 eleventh graders from 70 junior high and senior high schools in Korea. Previous suicidal ideation was indicated by 38.5% of the 8th graders and 51.3% of the 11th graders, and 3.9% of the 8th graders and 4.9 % of the 11th graders reported that they had attempted suicide. Results, for both 8th and 11th graders, showed that factors significantly associated with suicide attempts included suicidal thoughts, hostility, and depression. These results indi-cate that early identification and treatment of psychological distress may have potential for reducing suicidal ideation as well as possible future suicides and suicide attempts.
