In this paper, we propose a neural network that has improved convergence performance based on redundancy modification in the multi-layer perceptron. The algorithm adjusts continuously weight in the limited learning condition. And the neural networks is learned by the sign of the modified weight. The simulation results show that the proposed learning method is faster than the general back-error propagation method in convergence speed.

Precast R.C. slabs are gaining an acceptance for the construction of bridge structures because of simplicity in their construction processes. One of the frequently encountered problems with precast slabs is design of transverse joint. In this study, grout type transverse joints between precast concrete slabs are statically tested to determine the cracking loads and ultimate shear capacities. The tests are performed with a loading equipment especially designed and constructed in the lab to induce shear failures on the joints of the test specimens. Shape of the transverse joints, grouting materials and amount of prestress are selected as test parameters for the study. The results indicate that epoxy is an excellent grouting material which can be sued in limited locations where large tensile stress is acting on the slab. Longitudinal prestressing is also an effective method to increase the shear strength of the transverse joints. A rational method to estimate the cracking and ultimate loads for the design of grout type transverse joint is proposed based on the static loading test.
Determination of the Minimum Detectability of Surface Plasmon Resonance Devices by Using the 3σ Rule

Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) devices are known to be able to detect traces of chemicals and can, therefore, be applied to a variety of applications. However, in order to define the sensitivity of such a device, one must obtain its minimum detectability. Nevertheless, the standard way to define the lower limit of detectability of an SPR device has not yet been established. In this paper, we propose a method to define the minimum detectability of SPR devices based on the 3σ rule. We measured the response of an SPR device by varying the concentrations of a single neutral analyte (ethylene glycol in deionized water). Then, we successfully obtained its lower limit of detectability, based on the measured data and the 3σ rule. Our method provides a standardized way to easily evaluate the quality of SPR devices.

<P>A fiber-optic interferometric voltage sensor with a high-sensitivity is investigated. The fiber-optic voltage sensor is composed of an in-line Michelson interferometer bonded to a piezoelectric transducer (PZT). The in-line Michelson interferometer is a hollow optical fiber spliced to a single-mode fiber at one end and cleaved at the other end. A phase shift in the sensor output signal is induced when applying an AC voltage to the PZT; and a higher-amplitude voltage produces an output interference signal with a higher frequency. The relation between the amplitude of the applied voltage and the phase shift of the sensor output signal is found to be approximately linear and the slope of the relation graph is about 0.116 πradian/V. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
