        Protective effect of ginsenoside Rb1 against tacrolimus-induced apoptosis in renal proximal tubular LLC-PK1 cells

        Background: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the potential protective effects of six ginsenosides (Rb1, Rb2, Rc, Rd, Rg1, and Rg3) isolated from Panax ginseng against tacrolimus (FK506)-induced apoptosis in renal proximal tubular LLC-PK1 cells. Methods: LLC-PK1 cells were treated with FK506 and ginsenosides, and cell viability was measured. Protein expressions of mitogen-activated protein kinases, caspase-3, and kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1) were evaluated by Western blotting analyses. The number of apoptotic cells was measured using an image-based cytometric assay. Results: Reduction in cell viability by $60{\mu}M$ FK506 was ameliorated significantly by cotreatment with ginsenosides Rg1 and Rb1. The phosphorylation of p38, extracellular signal-regulated kinases, and KIM-1, and cleavage of caspase-3, increased markedly in LLC-PK1 cells treated with FK506 and significantly decreased after cotreatment with ginsenoside Rb1. The number of apoptotic cells decreased by 6.0% after cotreatment with ginsenoside Rb1 ($10{\mu}M$ and $50{\mu}M$). Conclusion: The antiapoptotic effects of ginsenoside Rb1 on FK506-induced apoptosis were mediated by the inhibition of mitogen-activated protein kinases and caspase activation.

        In vivo transduction of ETV2 improves cardiac function and induces vascular regeneration following myocardial infarction

        <▼1><P>Vascular regeneration in ischemic hearts has been considered a target for new therapeutic strategies. It has been reported that ETV2 is essential for vascular development, injury-induced neovascularization and direct cell reprogramming of non-endothelial cells into endothelial cells. Thus, the objective of this study was to explore the therapeutic potential of ETV2 in murine models of myocardial infarction in vivo. Direct myocardial delivery of lentiviral ETV2 into rodents undergoing myocardial infarction dramatically upregulated the expression of markers for angiogenesis as well as anti-fibrosis and anti-inflammatory factors in vivo. Consistent with these findings, echocardiography showed significantly improved cardiac function in hearts with induced myocardial infarction upon ETV2 injection compared to that in the control virus-injected group as determined by enhanced ejection fraction and fractional shortening. In addition, ETV2-injected hearts were protected against massive fibrosis with a remarkable increase in capillary density. Interestingly, major fractions of capillaries were stained positive for ETV2. In addition, ECs infected with ETV2 showed enhanced proliferation, suggesting a direct role of ETV2 in vascular regeneration in diseased hearts. Furthermore, culture media from ETV2-overexpressing cardiac fibroblasts promoted endothelial cell migration based on scratch assay. Importantly, intramyocardial injection of the adeno-associated virus form of ETV2 into rat hearts with induced myocardial infarction designed for clinical applicability consistently resulted in significant augmentation of cardiac function. We provide compelling evidence that ETV2 has a robust effect on vascular regeneration and enhanced cardiac repair after myocardial infarction, highlighting a potential therapeutic function of ETV2 as an efficient means to treat failing hearts.</P></▼1><▼2><P><B>Cardiovascular disease: New hope for healing the heart</B></P><P>A gene therapy strategy that stimulates cardiovascular repair could improve recovery for heart attack patients. Heart attacks inflict severe damage on the heart and blood vessels, tissues with limited capacity for self-repair. Researchers led by Kiwon Ban of the City University of Hong Kong and Hun-Jun Park of the Catholic University of Korea, Seoul, have now demonstrated that a gene responsible for cardiovascular development can also efficiently stimulate heart repair. They used viruses to deliver the gene into a mouse model of heart attack, and showed that treated heart tissues exhibited strong recovery relative to untreated controls. The treatment reduced scar tissue formation and promoted proliferation of the cells lining blood vessels and blood vessel formation, measurably improving heart function. This approach could lay the groundwork for treating a common potentially fatal event.</P></▼2>

        강체전차선로 고속화를 위한 설계파라미터 민감도 분석 연구

        R-Bar (Overhead Rigid Conductor system) has been lately used for the speed of over 200 ㎞/h in Europe, while it has been developed and used for the max. speed of 120 ㎞/h in Korea. Because R-Bar has advantages of reduction of tunnel cross sectional area and maintenance, its development for more high-speed is urgent in Korea having many mountain area. Therefore a sensitivity analysis of design parameters for the speed-up of R-Bar has performed in this study. For the analysis, we have developed a program for the prediction of dynamic characteristics between a pantograph and R-Bar. The program was evaluated with the actual test result and a current collection performance according to the parameters such as a distance between brackets, a stiffness of bracket and of R-Bar rail was predicted with the program.

        A detail design of overhead catenary system can be divided into a pegging plan and a design of MD(mounting diagram). In the pegging plan, the mast location, staggering and tension length are determined in the longitudinal point of view according to track condition, location of substation and etc. In the MD, a transversal diagram including masts, all of wires, cantilever, foundation and etc. and materials used are shown. This study presents a development of a software to design the MD for a conventional catenary system automatically. In the program, thin walled steel pole, foundation, cantilever, all of wires and etc. are automatically drawn according to the input and catenary conditions. And materials used in the MD and the section can be also managed respectively in the program. This application of the program is developed using C# for input/calculating and using C++(ObjectARX) for drafting the MD, respectively.

      • Analysis of Usability Evaluation for a Graphic User Interface

        Objective: The present study is to establish a usability evaluation framework for graphic user interface (GUI). Background: Existing studies have mainly focused on specific GUI evaluation such as mobile applications and website; however, lacked of consideration with GUIs for a specialized field such as the military. Method: A four-step approach was applied in the study: (1) literature review of twenty studies related to usability evaluation, (2) analysis of GUI usability aspects by design component, design guideline/evaluation criterion, and evaluation method, (3) development of an integrated usability evaluation framework, and (4) application to screen GUIs of a computer based training (CBT). Results: Design component in the integrated usability evaluation framework was consisted of 40 design dimensions in 9 components (e.g., alignment in layout), design guideline/evaluation criterion 33 principles and guidelines (e.g., visibility), and evaluation method 38 measures (e.g., completion time) and 19 techniques (e.g., heuristic evaluation). Conclusion: The usability evaluation framework for GUI was developed in the study. Application: The usability evaluation framework for GUI can be applicable to a variety of GUIs (e.g., console screen) and utilized to evaluate GUIs systematically.

        Cloud-based Satellite Image Processing Service by Open Source Stack: A KARI Case

        In recent, cloud computing paradigm and open source as a huge trend in the Information Communication Technology (ICT) are widely applied, being closely interrelated to each other in the various applications. The integrated services by both technologies is generally regarded as one of a prospective webbased business models impacting the concerned industries. In spite of progressing those technologies, there are a few application cases in the geo-based application domains. The purpose of this study is to develop a cloud-based service system for satellite image processing based on the pure and full open source. On the OpenStack, cloud computing open source, virtual servers for system management by open source stack and image processing functionalities provided by OTB have been built or constructed. In this stage, practical image processing functions for KOMPSAT within this service system are thresholding segmentation, pan-sharpening with multi-resolution image sets, change detection with paired image sets. This is the first case in which a government-supporting space science institution provides cloud-based services for satellite image processing functionalities based on pure open source stack. It is expected that this implemented system can expand with further image processing algorithms using public and open data sets.

        In the era of social media, marketers have struggled to understand and serve participants' diverse and multifaceted needs in a novel form of online brand community in the social-networking sites such as Facebook. Thus, this study identifies different groups of participants affiliated with Facebook brand pages based on their needs for brand connection. The need-based segments are validated by comparing results across foodservice and consumer goods. Results of cluster analysis reveal three distinct segments (i.e., residents, lurkers, and peepers) based on participants' functional, experiential, and incentive needs. Results of multivariate analysis of variance illustrate significant differences in relational tendencies for a brand of interest among these three groups. The three groups are profiled based on participants' engagement level. Findings of this study are expected to help marketers better understand the needs of diverse participants in their SNS-embedded brand community so they can develop tailored communication strategies for targeted groups.
