Social readjustment is very important in rehabilitation of stroke survivors. The purpose of this study was to examine the level of social readjustment and related factors in stroke survivors. Especially, to find the most useful predictor for social readjustment is a major point of this research. The study included 254 outpatients who were given follow-up care after discharge from. Occupational rehabilitation and resumption of the perceived meaningful social activity prios to the stroke were used to measure social readjustment. The resumptions of first meaningful social activity was the best predictor for life satisfaction in stroke survivors(r=.245, p<.01). The substance of perceived meaningful social activities were job, meeting with friends, hobby and activities for the family. The sum of meaningful social activities (r = 175. p<.01) and occupational rehabilitation (r= 116, p<.05) were significantly related to life satisfaction. There were significant difference in IADL, depression and life satisfaction according to resumption of meaningful social activity. But, occupational rehabilitation was not related to depression. The level of social readjustment was different between occupational rehabilitation and resumption of meaningful social activity. It was 45.7% in the first meaningful social activity and 36.6% in occupational rehabilitation. The related factors with resumption of the first meaningful social activity were that of IADL, depression, illness intrusiveness and cognitive function. And the level of IADL, illness intrusiveness, cognitive function, and age were significantly related to occupational rehabilitation. In conclusion, we suggest that the resumption of the first meaningful activity in stroke survivors is the best predictor of social rehabilitation. Thus. nurses need to work for resumption of meaningful activity as well as occupational rehabilitation.
Glycosylation Enhances the Physicochemical Properties of Caffeic Acid Phenethyl Ester

In this study, we synthesized a glycosylated derivative of caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) using the amylosucrase from Deinococcus geothermalis with sucrose as a substrate and examined its solubility, chemical stability, and anti-inflammatory activity. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy showed that the resulting glycosylated CAPE (G-CAPE) was the new compound caffeic acid phenethyl ester-4-O-α-D-glucopyranoside. G-CAPE was 770 times more soluble than CAPE and highly stable in Dulbecco’s modified Eagle’s medium and buffered solutions, as estimated by its half-life. The glycosylation of CAPE did not significantly affect its anti-inflammatory activity, which was assessed by examining lipopolysaccharide-induced nitric oxide production and using a nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 reporter assay. Furthermore, a cellular uptake experiment using high-performance liquid chromatography analysis of the cell-free extracts of RAW 264.7 cells demonstrated that G-CAPE was gradually converted to CAPE within the cells. These results demonstrate that the glycosylation of CAPE increases its bioavailability by helping to protect this vital molecule from chemical or enzymatic oxidation, indicating that G-CAPE is a promising candidate for prodrug therapy.

The aim of this study was evaluated the formation and sustainability of curl and hair damage minimization during the permanent waving. So that, sodium bromate and hydrogen peroxide as oxidant have been treated with cysteine on normal hair for 5-, 10-, 15- and 20- minutes and then the wave form, physicochemical properties and morphological change have been observed. As the results, optimal reaction time of oxidants has been confirmed as 20-minutes application of sodium bromate and 10-minutes application of hydrogen peroxide. When comparing two oxidants, hydrogen peroxide was excellent in formation rate of wave and sodium bromate was superb in curl sustainability. Considering the decrease in hair thickness was lower in sodium bromate than in hydrogen peroxide but was same in both 10-minutes treatment of sodium bromate and 20-minutes treatment of hydrogen peroxide. In addition, tensile strength was higher in treatment of hydrogen peroxide. When it comes to morphological observation of hair cuticle, hair damage turned out to be low because hydrogen peroxide with strong oxidizing capacity reacts to hair for a very short period of time. Therefore, it is considered that sodium bromate should be used to preserve elastic S-curl for a long time and to reduce the perm frequency and hydrogen peroxide should be treated to curtail the time required in permanent waving and to minimize hair damage.

To determine the prevalence of Escherichia (E.) coli O157 : H7 from pigs after the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) system has been applied to Korean swine farm since 2006, 291 fecal samples were tested between May and December in 2008. Four E. coli O157:non-H7 (1.4%) were isolated from 4 different non-HACCP-accredited farms and they didn't have virulent genes which can cause illness for human. Also, Clostridium (C.) perfringens, Salmonella spp. and E. coli enterotoxins were tested using multiplex PCR. The positive rate for these pathogens of non-HACCP-accredited farms was higher than that of HACCP-accredited farms, and especially in case of C. perfringens, E. coli enterotoxins LT and STa, it was statistically significant (p < 0.05). Thus, the early implementation of the HACCP program is expected to greatly contribute to the safety of livestock products as well as food hygiene.

Purpose: Purpose of this study was to identify major trends of action research from 2006 to 2013 and suggest directions for activating and advancing domestic action research in nursing. Methods: A review was made of 118 action research studies in hospital settings reported in international journals. Search from PubMed, Ovid, and CINHAL was done using analysis criteria developed by the researchers. General and methodological characteristics and focus on changing outcomes of action research were analyzed. Results: The major group of researchers belonged to colleges/ universities (40.7%). Methods included use of qualitative methods (61.0%), research questions (24.6%), and use of theoretical models (35.6%). Prevalent data collection methods were interviews (20.2%), and 48.3% showed more than a 1-cycle process including spiral circulation structure. Focus of changing outcomes of the 56 papers including more than 1-cycle were practice (66.1%), environment (8.9%), client-nurse (7.1%). Conclusion: Trends in action research in nursing were identified providing necessary reasons to increase action research in nursing as follows: needs of various researchers including stakeholders as well as healthcare providers, various research designs including unconstrained reflection and writing, specific presentation of adapted theoretical models and action strategies, and quality assurance for validity and reliability of research processes and outcomes.
복분자씨유의 식용유지 대체가 C57BL/6J Mice의 혈청 지질에 미치는 영향

본 연구는 식이로 비만이 유도되는 C57BL/6J mice에 복분자씨유와 지방의 종류를 달리한 식이를 급여하여 체중 및 체내 지질패턴에 미치는 효과를 평가하고자 수행되었다. 이를 위해 실험동물의 체중증가량 및 식이섭취효율을 평가하고, 지방 조직의 무게 및 혈중과 간 중 지질성분을 분석하였다. 또한 β-oxidation과 관련된 카르니틴 함량 변화와 superoxide dismutase(SOD) 항산화효소 활성도를 측정하였다. 실험 결과 실험동물의 체중이 고지방복분자씨유첨가식이군(RCO군)에서 유의하게 감소하였고, 식이섭취효율이 고지방옥수수유첨가식이군(CO군)과 RCO군에서 유의적으로 낮았다. 복부 지방과 등 지방은 CO군과 RCO군에서 유의적으로 낮았고, 혈중 HDL-C와 HDL-C/TC(%)는 RCO군에서 유의적으로 높았다. 간 중 acid-soluble acylcarnitine 및 total carnitine의 카르니틴 수준은 CO군과 RCO군에서, SOD 항산화효소 활성은 RCO군에서 고지방돈지첨가식이군과 고지방우지첨가식이군에 비해 유의적으로 높았다. 본 연구 결과 복분자씨유는 비만이 유도된 성인 쥐의 체중 및 체지방량과 HDL-C 및 HDL-C/TC(%)의 개선에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 분석되었으며, 이는 복분자씨유를 비만인들에게 적용했을 때 매우 효과적인 유지 급원으로써의 사용 가능성이 있음을 시사하는 결과로 사료된다. 이에 대해 추후 복분자씨유의 기능성과 상업성에 대한 후속 연구가 필요할 것으로 여겨지며, 본 연구는 현재 식품가공 과정 중 폐기처분되고 있는 복분자씨가 식품산업의 새로운 소재로써의 가능성이 있음을 확인한 의미 있는 실험이라 사료된다. This study evaluated the effects of Rubus coreanus Miq. oil on the plasma lipid profile of high fat diet (HFD)-induced obese mice. Animals were randomly divided into 4 groups (n=10). After completion of the 5-week experimental period, we measured bodyweight gain, food intake, adipose tissue mass, and plasma lipid profile. We also analyzed the activities of carnitine and superoxide dismutase (SOD) involved in β-oxidation and antioxidation, respectively. Our results show that HFD-induced weight gain in animals in the R. coreanus Miq. oil diet group (RCO) and corn oil diet group (CO) was significantly lower compared to animals in the HFD group; RCO supplementation had a more noticeable effect than CO. Visceral and back fat weights were lower in the RCO and CO groups while plasma HDL cholesterol (HDL-C) and HDL-C per total cholesterol [HDL-C/TC (%)] ratio were significantly higher in the RCO group. The contents of acid-soluble acylcarnitine and total carnitine as well as SOD activation were significantly higher in the RCO group, but no significant difference was observed between the RCO and CO groups. In conclusion, RCO effectively averted elevation of total body weight and fat weight in HFD-induced obese mice and promoted increased HDL-C. Therefore, R. coreanus Miq. oil might play an anti-obesity role in obese people and could be used as an effective oil supplement.
