Consumer response to exterior atmospherics at a university-branded merchandise store
Karen H Hyllegard,Jennifer Paff Ogle,Ruoh-Nan Yan,Kevin Kissell 한국의류학회 2016 Fashion and Textiles Vol.3 No.1
This study examined the influence of exterior store atmospherics upon college students’ responses to a university-branded merchandise store. The research was informed by Mehrabian and Russell’s (1974) Stimulus–Organism–Response (S–O–R) model, which proposes that consumers’ emotional responses to a physical store environment mediate how the environment shapes their patronage behaviors. An online survey with a 2 × 2 × 2 experimental design component was implemented to explore the influence of three aspects of exterior store atmospherics (i.e., landscaping, store greeter, and electronic kiosk) upon three dependent variables: consumer emotional state (pleasure/arousal), consumer liking of the store exterior, and patronage intentions. The sample included 336 college students. Analyses provide support for the S–O–R model and related research; collectively, findings are consistent with the premise that pleasure and liking of the storefront exterior shape patronage intentions at a university-branded merchandise store. The exterior store atmospherics manipulated in the present study, however, did not positively influence consumers’ emotional states or liking. This study examined the influence of understudied aspects of exterior store atmospherics on consumers’ emotional states and liking as well as their patronage intentions toward a university-branded merchandise store. Contrary to prior work, findings provide evidence that, in some retail contexts, store greeters may generate negative responses from consumers.

This paper exploits CHFS2017’s household data to study misplaced confidence when perception deviates from objective financial knowledge. Observing the relationship between “misplaced confidence” and stock market participation and net worth, I explain the mystery of limited stock market participation: misplaced confidence leads to sub-optimal choices. The study also finds that the positive correlation between objective financial knowledge and stock market participation is affected by threshold effects.
Addressing the Talent Gap through Organizational Capacity Development
Karen E. Watkins 중앙대학교 한국인적자원개발전략연구소 2009 역량개발학습연구 Vol.4 No.1
As the rate of change increases, organizations must develop their capacity to adapt. Multi-national organizations operate across both organizational and national cultures that impact both the rate and the manner in which the organization changes. This session will present findings from a cross-cultural comparison of studies of the learning culture. Findings from this study may enable organizations to identify ways to grow their own talent by creating a learning culture. The session concludes by identifying emerging challenges including creating virtual group and organizational learning cultures, globalization, diversity, and the talent needed to foster group and organizational learning in this changing organizational context.

In 2012, Taiwan implemented a dual-track quality assurance system comprising accreditation and self-accreditation in higher education institutions. Self-accrediting institutions can accredit their programs without requiring approval from external quality assurance agencies. In contrast to other countries, the Ministry of Education of Taiwan authorized self-accrediting institutions to develop their own evaluation standards. This study investigated the institution-based accreditation standards and their implications on institutional internal quality assurance. Content analysis revealed that 37 % of the indicators of self-accreditation were new and not used as review indicators in the original accreditation track. Two frequently added indicators were featured indicators and levels of internationalization. The results also indicated that institutions tend to structure their internal quality assurance systems uniquely. Three types of approaches for developing institution-based standards were identified: bottom-up, hybrid, and innovative approaches. Self-accreditation has benefited institutions committed to educational quality and pursuing excellence by enabling them to employ a fitness-for-purpose approach. The diversity of higher education and educational policy changes constitute new challenges to higher education. Balancing between accountability and autonomy is critical for all stakeholders of higher education.
Teaching Empathy through English Literature and Creative Writing in the Korean Classroom
Karen Muckenhirn 한국영미문학교육학회 2020 영미문학교육 Vol.24 No.3
Low levels of empathy in university students has become an increasing problem worldwide, including in South Korea, triggering an empathy crisis. Various teaching methods and strategies have been employed in the Korean classroom with positive results, including teaching empathy through English literature. However, few studies have explored the combination of English literature and creative writing in English to teach and build cognitive empathy. This study presents the teaching strategies and methods of a class called Critical and Creative Textual Studies, which combines a unique fusion of analysis and interpretation of English literary texts combined with creative thinking and writing practice. Students first critically analyzed assigned texts, and then engaged in creative writing exercises designed to encourage perspective taking. They were then given a choice of which text to creatively respond to in writing. Three of these creative responses were then analyzed for evidence and extent of cognitive empathy through various analytical techniques including perspective taking, emotive language, level of immersion, type of description and detail, syntax, repetition, verb tense, figurative language, and showing vs. telling. All three showed the potential for experiencing and achieving cognitive empathy. Student survey responses supported these positive results. It is hoped that this study will open up and expand the possibilities for creative writing in the English in the Korean classroom, and generate discussion regarding strategies and methods for increasing empathy among university students.
