Consumption and disposal behaviors of primary and secondary batteries from households

Batteries are one of the indispensable products in our society. Among 4.4 billion of batteries sold in Japan as of 2019, secondary ((rechargeable) battery battery accounted for 64%. In recent years, it was reported that ignition and fire accidents caused by lithium-ion batteries during waste collection, intermediate treatment, and waste treatment processes has been increased. Considering countermeasures, understanding investigate actual consumption, usage, and disposal behaviors by the consumers is important. Therefore, an internet questionnaire survey (valid respondents: 3,973) was conducted to clarify the actual status of primary (disposable) and secondary battery from households. This survey was used to estimate the inflow, stock, and discharge of small household batteries, as well as to clarify behaviors and attitudes related to the purchase and discharge of primary and secondary batteries. As results, it was found that the highest response rate for both reasons for purchasing and not purchasing secondary battery was for economic aspects (long-term economic benefits and high initial cost), indicating the importance of recognizing correct information on economic efficiency. Number of batteries annually purchased and disposed from households were estimated to be 5.96 and 4.67 per capita, respectively. As domestic stocks, number of batteries unused, in used, and stocked after usage, were estimated to be 4.96, 5.11, and 2.01 per capita, respectively. Among the batteries disposed, secondary battery accounted for 7.2%. However, secondary batteries accounted for 22% of batteries in use. The proportion of secondar batteries disposed will likely increase in the future. It was also found that only 57% and 44% of respondents in Kyoto city disposed primary and secondary batteries properly in accordance with the guidance by the municipality. Therefore, further dissemination of correct sorting methods is needed.
Unstructured-Mesh-Based Simulation for Subsonic and Supersonic Flow Control with a Plasma Actuator

A plasma actuator is a simple device that can control flow with low power supply, so this is very practical and several applications have been proposed by many researchers. In this paper, a numerical method for simulating the flow with a plasma actuator is proposed, and it is applied to supersonic flow as well as subsonic flow. This method adopts unstructured mesh so that it can be employed for complex geometries. A numerical model proposed by Suzen et al. is used for simulating the phenomena caused by a plasma actuator, and TAS-code is employed for the flow field prediction. First, this paper validated the proposed method through two test calculations for subsonic flow; the Hump model used at CFD validity workshop in NASA Langley and then the NACA0015 airfoil. According to the results of the subsonic test calculations, the present method was able to predict the effects of the plasma actuator to the flow separation correctly. Finally, a calculation with the ramp model is conducted to control the shock wave, and its capability to control the shock wave through the shift in the shock wave location was confirmed.
Layered double hydroxides/oxidized carbon nanotube nanocomposites for CO2 capture

A systematic investigation on the influence of synthesis method and chemical composition of LDH/oxidized carbon nanotube (LDH/OCNT) nanocomposites on their CO2 capture performance wereperformed. Three LDH/OCNT nanocomposites were prepared using two methods: ‘‘electrostatic selfassembly’’and ‘‘direct co-precipitation’’. All LDH/OCNT nanocomposites were thoroughly characterized. The isothermal CO2 adsorption at different temperatures (60–400 8C) and adsorption/desorption cyclingtests were conducted. Both the CO2 adsorption capacity and the multi-cycle stability of LDH derivedadsorbents were improved by the introduction of OCNT. In particular, the absolute CO2 capture capacityof Mg-Al-NO3 LDH was increased by more than twice by adding 9.1 wt% OCNT.
A Case-based Design Framework for Screen Transition Diagram of Web Application

Web applications are widely used on the Internet and Intranets. They are easy to be provided because a provider does not have to deploy them to each client. Accordingly, screen transition diagram (STD) is used to analyze the requirements of Web applications quickly. STD is useful to grasp the outline of the whole application, but analysts in most cases draw the diagrams from the scratch, even if they contain similar functionalities. This paper addresses a case-based design framework for supporting to draw STD of Web applications. In this framework, the analysts would combine different parts of STD over multiple Web applications, by dividing STDs into Web Page Transition Groups (WPTGs) based on the exchanged data among the screens. Moreover, a search support method to find appropriate WPTGs is considered in the framework.

Retroperitoneal fibrosis is associated with fibroblast proliferation due to inflammatory changes in adipose/fibrous tissue. Given that aortic dilation in abdominal aortic aneurysm can cause compression of the ureter, abdominal aortic aneurysm complicated by retroperitoneal fibrosis is likely to result in urinary tract obstruction. Accordingly,close attention to changes in perioperative urine volume is warranted when operating on patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm complicated by retroperitoneal fibrosis. We have recently performed laparotomies on two cases of abdominal aortic aneurysm complicated by retroperitoneal fibrosis. In the first case, surgery was performed without the placement of a ureteral stent. The patient developed postrenal acute renal failure caused by postoperative urinary retention. In the second case, ureteral stent placement in advance enabled perioperative management without complications. The clinical course of these cases suggests that, in laparotomy with concomitant retroperitoneal fibrosis, preoperative ureteral stent placement can prevent postoperative complications in the renal and urinary systems.

Even after landfill is closed, biological degradation process and, production of leachate and landfill gas, continues for several decades or longer. In Japan, semi-aerobic structure is recommended for supply air into waste layer by natural convection. The heat generated by aerobic microorganism raise the temperature of waste, then the difference of temperature between waste and the atmosphere drives air to flow into waste layer from the end of leachate collection pipe. In the previous research by authors, there was found the positive correlation between gas velocity and the temperature at exit of gas vent, so the relation can be used to evaluate the soundness of natural aeration function of semi-aerobic landfill. In this study, data of gas velocity and temperature was collected from 26 landfills from which gas flow is detected. Additional measurement was also asked to increase data on the relation between gas velocity and temperature only. As a result, only 7 landfills were considered sound semi-aerobic landfill.
A Sensor Network using Content-Aware Messaging Network Architecture

The present paper describes an approach to the construction of a sensor network using a messaging network. A messaging network is an over lay network with a set of content-aware message handling ca-pabilities. The use of a messaging network can reduce the complexity and maintenance burden of integrated sensor information systems. Message mediation(afunction of the messaging network) enables interoperation of various applications and integration of diverse sensor data. Subscription(an other concept in the messaging network) enables proper information delivery of the sensor data to each user. The proposed approach is helpful in implementing an SOA-based sensor network and enables flexible sensor network configuration and utilization.
