Non-isothermal Crystallization Behavior, Rheological and Thermal Conductive Properties of Recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate/Polyethylene Blends

        Bin Yang,Dan Wang,Qin-Ting Chen,Jin Chen,Kang Chen,Ji-Bin Miao,Jia-Sheng Qian,Ru Xia,You Shi 한국고분자학회 2020 폴리머 Vol.44 No.3

In this study, we prepared series of recycled polyethylene terephthalate (RPET)/polyethylene (PE) blends using melt extrusion. The effect of RPET content on crystallization behavior and thermal conductive properties of the resultant blends were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA), etc. RPET was found to exert nucleating effect on the melt crystallization of PE. The Agari model presented fairly reasonable prediction of thermal conductivity as a function of RPET loading. The melt cooling process was predicted with an enthalpy transformation method (ETM), which is a well-established mean of evaluating the instantaneous heat conduction of crystalline polymers/composites, and the obtained curves were consistent with our experimental results. Besides, a four-parameter model (FPM) was adopted coupled with an in-situ temperature measurement in order to further disclose the solidification and crystallization kinetics of PE in the presence of RPET in the blends.

Family of boost and buck‑boost converters with continuous input current and reduced semiconductor count for hybrid energy systems

        Shan Miao,Xinyuan Luo,Wei Liu,Yang Jin 전력전자학회 2024 JOURNAL OF POWER ELECTRONICS Vol.24 No.2

Power converters are the key link to realize energy transfer from hybrid energy systems (HESs) to loads. In this paper, a family of boost and buck-boost DC-DC converters that is highly desirable for HESs is proposed and analyzed. The proposed converters possess continuous input currents that can realize small input current ripples and avoid the use of large input filters. Besides, the semiconductor counts of the proposed converters are low. Two of the converters employ single-switch doublediode while the other two adopt single-switch triple-diode. The reduced semiconductor counts greatly improve converter efficiency and system reliability. In addition, these boost and buck-boost converters have high voltage-boosting capabilities, and wide voltage gain ranges can be achieved when they are applied to HESs. Theoretical analyses and an experimental prototype are used to verify the characteristics and effectiveness of these converters.

Genome-wide analyses and expression patterns under abiotic stress of LAC gene family in pear (Pyrus bretschneideri)

        Lu Chunyi,Yang Tianyuan,Zhang Yiwu,Miao Xingchen,Jin Cong,Xu Xiaoyong 한국식물생명공학회 2021 Plant biotechnology reports Vol.15 No.3

Plant laccases are copper-containing glycoproteins oxidizing monolignol, which is a key regulator for lignin polymerization and deposition in plant cell walls. In plants, the LAC gene family has been identifed and functionally characterized in Arabidopsis, rice, and other plant species. Whereas, no systematic analysis of LAC genes was explored in pear (Pyrus bretschneideri), especially their biological roles in stress responses. In this study, a total of 40 P. bretschneideri LACs (PbLACs) were identifed from the pear genome, among which 32 PbLACs members were distributed on 14 chromosomes, and 8 PbLACs were mapped onto scafold contigs. Subsequently, the chromosome localizations, gene structures, conserved domains, gene duplication were analyzed comprehensively and bioinformatically. Phylogenetic analysis demonstrated that the PbLACs were classifed into seven groups. Synteny analysis exhibited that whole-genome duplication (WGD)/segmental duplication was essential for the expansion of PbLAC family. In detail, the 26 PbLACs duplicated gene pairs were taken place at the two WGD events. Further, our results showed that purifying selection presented as the primary force to drive the evolution of PbLACs. Notably, the transcriptomic data were used for exploring the biological roles of PbLACs in response to abiotic stresses (cold, drought, and salt) in pear. We found that the expression of certain PbLACs was signifcantly induced by drought, cold or salt treatments, suggesting that these PbLACs are potentially key genes for further functional characterization in pear in the future. Taken together, our results not only contribute to an enhanced understanding of the evolutional complexity of PbLAC gene family but also provide a good platform for functional studies of PbLAC genes in response to various abiotic stresses.

      • Characterization of three serotonin receptors from the small white butterfly, <i>Pieris rapae</i>

        Qi, Yi-xiang,Jin, Miao,Ni, Xu-yang,Ye, Gong-yin,Lee, Youngseok,Huang, Jia Elsevier 2017 Insect biochemistry and molecular biology Vol.87 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) plays a key role in modulating diverse physiological processes and behaviors in both protostomes and deuterostomes. These functions are mediated through the binding of serotonin to its receptors, which are recognized as potential insecticide targets. We investigated the sequence, pharmacology and tissue distribution of three 5-HT receptors (Piera5-HT1A, Piera5-HT1B, Piera5-HT7) from the small white butterfly <I>Pieris rapae</I>, an important pest of cultivated cabbages and other mustard family crops. Activation of Piera5-HT1A or Piera5-HT1B by 5-HT inhibited the production of cAMP in a dose-dependent manner. Stimulation of Piera5-HT7 with 5-HT increased cAMP level significantly. Surprisingly, with the exception of 5-methoxytryptamine, agonists including α-methylserotonin, 8-Hydroxy-DPAT and 5-carboxamidotryptamine activated these receptors poorly. The results are consistent with previous findings in <I>Manduca sexta</I>. All three receptors were blocked by methiothepin, but ketanserin and yohimbine were not effective. The selective mammalian 5-HT receptor antagonists SB 216641 and SB 269970 displayed potent inhibition effects on Piera5-HT1B and Piera5-HT7 respectively. The results we achieved here indicate that the pharmacological properties of Lepidoptera 5-HT receptors are quite different from those in other insects and vertebrates and may contribute to development of new selective pesticides. This study offers important information on three 5-HT receptors from <I>P. rapae</I> that will facilitate further analysis of the functions of 5-HT receptors in insects.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Serotonin receptors Piera5-HT1A, Piera5-HT1B, and Piera5-HT7 from <I>Pieris rapae</I> were cloned and examined. </LI> <LI> Upon serotonin activation, Piera5-HT1A and Piera5-HT1B inhibited cAMP production whereas Piera5-HT7 induced it. </LI> <LI> All three receptors were poorly activated by serotoninergic agonists, indicating their distinct pharmacological properties. </LI> <LI> All three receptors were blocked by methiothepin; SB 216641 and SB 269970 inhibited Pr5-HT1B and Pr5-HT7, respectively. </LI> <LI> All three receptors were highly expressed in neuronal tissues while Pr5-HT7 mRNA predominated in the gut. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

Beneficial effects of natural Jeju groundwaters on lipid metabolism in high-fat diet-induced hyperlipidemic rats

        Yan-chao Wang,Jin-miao Lu,Hui-zi Jin,Ai-niu Ma,Jin-yang Zhang,Nian Gong,Qi Xiao,Bin Zhu,Ying-fang Lv,Na Yu,Wei-dong Zhang,Yong-xiang Wang 한국영양학회 2014 Nutrition Research and Practice Vol.8 No.2

BACKGROUND: Groundwater is believed to possess many beneficial effects due to its natural source of various minerals. In this study, we examined the effects of natural Jeju groundwater S1 (SamdasooTM), S2 and S3 pumped up from different locations of Jeju Island, Korea, along with local tap water, on body weight gain, serum lipids and lipoproteins, and liver histopathology in high-fat diet-induced hyperlipidemic rats. MATERIALS/METHODS: Rats were randomly and equally divided into 6 groups. Different water samples were supplied to the hyperlipidemic rats as their daily drinking water and the widely-used anti-hyperlipidemic drug simvastatin was used as a positive control. Body weight, serum lipids and lipoproteins were measured weekly. Liver weight, liver index and liver histopathology were examined after the execution of the rats. RESULTS: After drinking Jeju groundwaters for two months, S2 but not S3 significantly reduced weight growth and serum triglycerides levels and increased high density lipoprotein-C (HDL-C) without affecting total cholesterol or LDL-C. S1 and particularly S2 significantly reduced the severity of liver hypertrophy and steatosis. All Groundwaters had much higher contents of vanadium (S3>S2>S1>>tap water) whereas S1 and S2 but not S3 markedly blocked autoxidation of ferrous ions. CONCLUSION: Jeju Groundwater S1 and particularly S2 exhibit protective effects against hyperlipidemia and fatty liver and hypothesize that the beneficial effect of Jeju Groundwaters may be contributed from blockade of autoxidation of ferrous ions rather than their high contents of vanadium.

In situ growth of hollow Cu2O spheres using anionic vesicles as soft templates

        Xiaolin Luo,Zhe Pan,Fei Pei,Zhipeng Jin,Kangkang Miao,Pengfei Yang,Huaming Qian,Qiang Chen,Guodong Feng 한국공업화학회 2018 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.59 No.-

Geometrically optimizing anionic vesicles were fabricated using two types of anionic surfactants with antipodal molecular configuration. The influence of counterions on the anionic vesicles was systematically investigated to maintain electrostatic interaction between the anionic vesicles and the precursors, as well as to ensure the structural integrity of the vesicle templates. The transcription from vesicles to hollow Cu2O spheres was achieved through an in situ reduction approach. The obtained hollow Cu2O spheres were assembled by abundant nanoparticles around the vesicle interface and showed preferable adsorption capacity for methyl orange in the dark compared with the solid Cu2O spheres synthesized without any surfactants.

Stanniocalcin-1 protects bovine intestinal epithelial cells from oxidative stress-induced damage

        Li-ming Wu,Rui Guo,Lin Hui,Yong-gang Ye,Jing-mei Xiang,Chun-yun Wan,Miao Zou,Rui Ma,Xiao-zhuan Sun,Shi-jin Yang,Ding-zong Guo 대한수의학회 2014 Journal of Veterinary Science Vol.15 No.4

Chronic enteritis can produce an excess of reactive oxygenspecies resulting in cellular damage. Stanniocalcin-1(STC-1)reportedly possesses anti-oxidative activity, the aim of thisstudy was to define more clearly the direct contribution ofSTC-1 to anti-oxidative stress in cattle. In this study, primaryintestinal epithelial cells (IECs) were exposed to hydrogenperoxide (H2O2) for different time intervals to mimic chronicenteritis-induced cellular damage. Prior to treatment with 200μM H2O2, the cells were transfected with a recombinantplasmid for 48 h to over-express STC-1. Acridine orange/ethidium bromide (AO/EB) double staining and trypan blueexclusion assays were then performed to measure cell viabilityand apoptosis of the cells, respectively. The expression of STC-1and apoptosis-related proteins in the cells was monitored byreal-time PCR and Western blotting. The results indicated thatboth STC-1 mRNA and protein expression levels positivelycorrelated with the duration of H2O2 treatment. H2O2 damagedthe bovine IECs in a time-dependent manner, and this effectwas attenuated by STC-1 over-expression. Furthermore, overexpressionof STC-1 up-regulated Bcl-2 protein expression andslightly down-regulated caspase-3 production in the damagedcells. Findings from this study suggested that STC-1 plays aprotective role in intestinal cells through an antioxidant mechanism.
