Fanfiction is a process of continuously "rewriting" stories based on a single canon and a literary realization of the multiverse. The creation and consumption of fanfiction is no longer limited to occur inside the fandom, but it occurs simultaneously and collectively through the enthusiastic and active public called "fan". This thesis hopes to redefine the meaning of fanfiction as an independent literary text, in objection to the common notion that fanfiction is inseparably linked with fandoms.
There is no doubt in that fanfictions take a narrative form; however if traditional fiction were to be seen as 'being' already complete, fanfiction would be 'becoming' something constantly produced.
In the aspect of content and form, fanfictions constantly create new aesthetic orders and this concept acts as a foundation to this thesis allowing it to examine fanfiction as 'productive literature'.
The environment surrounding fanfiction is complex. Hence fanfiction can not be discussed separately from the narrative and media. In terms of content fanfiction reflects the desire of the public, the creator, and best suitable form of expression is to be selected. Premise of this thesis is that fanfiction as a literary form builds a certain grammar and aesthetics based on a certain generation structure. This thesis reviews the creators and environment, even the generative factors and processes of fanfiction narrative and unveils the meaning of fanfiction.
Chapter 2 analyzes the environment, writer, and the generation mechanism behind the creation of fanfiction. Fanfiction reflects the emergence of new media technology and changes in the story environment due to the influence of postmodernism. In the first section, this thesis derives the characteristics of fanfiction’s creation environment based on 'database consumption'. Fans consume the canon mainly focused on components such as character, world, and event, and these individual story data constitute a "canon database". Each element is then selected to create a fanfiction. The resulted set of story elements is referred to as a "fanfiction database". Fanfiction is a new story database based on a database of canon, which is a meta story.
The second section identifies the creation mechanism of fanfiction through the concept of 'schema' of cognitive learning theory. The act of consuming canon as a database is similar to the "learning" process. Canon information can be divided into three layers of explicit information, implicit information, and empty information, which are expressed as texts of definite facts, indeterminate facts, and gaps. The information received by the fan is first input to the sensory register all together, then undergoes the process of selection and interpretation. Afterwards, in the working memory, repetitive combination actions are performed on the source data, and some of the combinations coded with the original setting stay in the long term memory. In this case, metacognition as a subjective world of experience is the reason for inducing various reproduction aspects of fanfiction. Furthermore, this process as an internal mechanism of fanfiction creation is called 'fan schema'.
In the third section, this thesis notes that fanfiction occurs and extends especially from characters in the canon database. Fans separate the characters of the canon from the canon itself and consume them as independent units. At this time, while maintaining the aura of the canon characters, changes are made in the inner, outer, and functional characteristics and shaped into new characters. This thesis sees fanfiction characters as an integration of races, appearances, roles, behaviors, and utterances combined in a specific way. The fanfiction characters are reproduced as circular figures reflecting genre customs. As such, fanfiction aims to have popular appeal in terms of literary formulas. Fanfiction is a database narrative that has its essence in the database. At this time, the narrative is ultimately expressed in a direction that can reveal the desire of the public. In this regard, this paper supports the possibility of fanfiction as a popular literature.
Chapter 3 derives the generation factors of fanfiction narratives. Fanfiction is created by preserving or modifying the two key elements, canon's "character" and the "world" surrounding it. According to Lubomir Dolezel and Marie-Laure Ryan, fanfiction is the successive world of the protoworld of canon. Also their possible world theory suggests four creation principles of the successive world. This thesis modifies these principles to "extension", "insertion", "transfer", and "reconstitution". This could be applied to classify fanfiction as the following: time-inserting, character-creating, multi-canon, and alternative universe.
"Time-inserting" fanfictions reveal the desire to expand canon through time and space. At this time, using the principle of 'interpolation' and 'extrapolation', the time zone of the canon is extended to a form of 'chronos' or expanded to a form of 'kairos'. The former linearly increases the time zone of the canon, while the latter selects events that are present in the chronology and closely examines. This thesis states that the purpose of these two time-inserting writings are ultimately "character-watching". On the surface, this kind of fanfiction aims to expand the space and time of the canon, but ultimately it points to the process of finding answers out of the curiosity of the characters.
"Character-creating" fanfictions reveal desire to experience the story world a step closer. Fan writers create a 'original character' with a self-reflective persona and incorporate it into the narrative of fanfiction. Original characters are portrayed as high-mimetic figures with superior appearance and behavior, and share close personal relationships with the canon characters. By transferring into their original characters, fans experience theatrical performance during the process of forming relationships with the characters in the story. Fans are eager to sustain this world as long as they exist through 'becoming a character' in the fanfiction world.
"Multi-canon" fanfiction is a creation method of combining the settings of two or more original texts, and finding the contact points of each piece is important in order to maintain the logical coherence of the storyworld. The multi-canon fanfiction is a 'hypermediacy' of multiple canons in that it directly reveals the process of the multiple narrative worlds while mediating each other. Fans desire to collectively consume their favorite canon characters through 'character collecting'.
"Alternative universe" fanfiction reconstructs both the character and the world represented in the canon, and it can be classified into three types: alternative world, borrowed world, and actual world. These sub-types focus on the romantic relationship between the characters, although their reproduction patterns are different from each other. Alternative universe fanfiction reveals the process of seeking utopia by continuously "transferring characters" through which the two characters can reach emotional and physical unity.
Fanfiction can be categorized into four different types depending on character and creation, the creative elements of the world, but what the narrative ultimately seeks is the story of "character". This thesis suggests that the identity and popularity of fanfiction are based on these characters.
Chapter 4 surveys the generation process of fanfictions. Fanfiction is roughly built on the centrifugal movement of "expansion" and "convergence". These two forces eventually form a productive cycle through antagonism and circulation. The first section examines how "story lexia", as a primary form of fanfiction, is formed by Gilles Deleuze's ‘synthesis’ theory. Story lexia mainly appears on Twitter and community bulletin boards, and can be categorized into two types: 'narrative discourse' and 'story'. Fans infinitely expands the storyworld by interacting through story lexias.
The second section scrutinizes "fanons" occurred during the convergence of multiple possible worlds conducted by fans. Fanon consists of a set of customary settings used to create fanfiction, and the story rule with formalities similar to the canon. Fanon resembles 'meme' as a self-replicator in that it is continuously transmitted and shared with the trailing text through 'cloning' and 'mutation'. As a condition for meme to exist, Susan Blackmore proposed an evolutionary algorithm based on mutation, selection, and retention of a characteristic; and in fanons, this is driven by the desire of fans. Fanon reflects the common desires of fans, and the code of desire is directly related to popularity.
The third section examines the cultural diversification patterns in fanfiction through the 'cultural translation' theory of Homi K. Bhabha. Although <Star Trek> originates from United States, it has been consumed in various cultures, both synchronically and diachronically. In this context, the realization of various fanfiction texts were possible due to the individual cultural backgrounds. This thesis sees fanfiction text generated by each culture as a work of cultural subjectification for a single canon. Hence, attention is paid to the two different cases of the Korean <Star Trek> fanfictions; one embracing the canon according to the Korean cultural context and the other translating canons in foreign languages into Korean. As a result, fanfiction constantly creates new meaning in the resonance that occurs around one canon, and this act of creating meaning becomes the basis to seeing fanfiction as "generation".
In the fourth section, this thesis reveals the ultimate goal of fanfiction generation process. The fanfiction community is a massive story archive that gradually grows in size through networking among users. The fanfiction creation as ‘telling more’, eventually develops beyond fanfiction itself as well as its community. This can be easily explained when looking at cases of fanfiction writers turning into professional writers. Fanfiction moves towards new text through repetition and transformational antagonisms about the canon. Fanfiction is defined "metacanon" since it functions as a new canon while still referring to the original canon. Fanfiction is the literary realization of the multiverse theory in that all imaginable universe are simultaneously in progress of action.
Chapter 5 provides an insight to the generative meaning of fanfiction based on previous discussions. The first section focuses on the characteristics of "fans", the subjects of fanfiction. Fan is a passionate individual who praises the canon, and constantly reuses and reinterprets that based on affection. The creativity of fans can be found through "character setting" or "original world". The creation of fanfiction is similar to the process of creating a series of "rules", and fans create unique pleasures through this rule-making.
The second section focuses on why fanfiction has been popular for many years, even though it has undergone intrinsic and formal diversification. This thesis reveals that fanfiction is conscious of the culture and time, so developed the storyworld through active interaction with them. Fans refer to both the real world in which they live and the protoworld of the canon. They construct a storyworld by borrowing or transforming some of them. In addition, fanfiction also reflects the ideological background and cultural customs of certain areas. The narratives of fanfiction evolve in real time through synchronization with the background, and fans actively reflect the media technologies and popular symbols that vary with the times in fanfiction. Thus, this thesis concludes that fanfiction itself is a report and chronicle of popular literature.
The third section examines the characteristics of fanfiction as a 'media conscious narrative'. Fanfiction is basically a work that is created and circulated on the web, and the formal characteristics of the media are actively reflected in the contents. This thesis examined it through Ryan's concept of ‘media-conscious narrative’. Media conscious narrative consists of symbolic dimension, technical dimension, and cultural dimension. On the symbolic level, fanfiction consists of multimodal resources. On the media level, fanfiction is created in various spaces, from personal social network services to collective communities. On the cultural level, fanfiction reveals the aspect of expanding its meaning through accepting canon from a pluralistic perspective and re-contextualizing them. Fanfiction is composed and expanded in a way that represents the desire of the public in three dimensions.
The fourth section focuses on the significance of fanfiction as popular literature. Fanfiction is a user-friendly, user-centered literature born out of a "professional amateur group" called fans. Fanfiction is pursuing various forms through multimedia writing, but it clearly aims at the form of "novel". In addition, this paper reveals the popularity of the fans in terms of content, which implies the possibility of fanfiction being defined as 'popular literature'. Fans have the potential to realize infinite imagination based on their expertise knowledge on canon.
Fanfiction is a metaphor for Holodeck, a literature that brings all imaginations to life. The world created this way refers to reality and at the same time utopian; it supports the canon but still original. Through formal progress fanfiction has extended the ways of expression on storytelling, and in terms of content it has displayed man's endless desire and value. This reflects the popular appeal that changes according to periodical, cultural, and spatial backgrounds, and this timeliness carry meaning in terms of cultural history of fanfiction. Fanfiction as a popular culture captures the flow of contemporary story culture, and its production structure forecasts the possibilities for fanfictions based on canons to exist infinitely. Fanfictions do not perish even if its canons meet a close.
The limitation of this study is that it does not deal with all reproduction aspects of fanfictions, being somewhat resolute when categorizing fanfictions. The study of various genres and forms that are created and consumed as a part of fanfiction is a remaining task which must be complemented by subsequent studies. Nevertheless, this thesis changes the existing flow of fanfiction research, and finds meaning in being a starting point to recognizing fanfiction as literature. This thesis holds anticipation to be a stepping stone to future studies on fanfictions and popular literatures in the digital era.
