Media is not a message any longer in storytelling. The power of story is beyond the barriers of medium specificity. The era of story selecting the media, a good story can be expressed in any media, and it converts itself by the aesthetics of overdetermination and the dynamics of weight fluctuations. The aim of this thesis is to prove that the transforming aspect of storytelling in accordance with media conversion has dual structure of metaphoric condensation and metonymic displacement. It also aims to investigate that it is possible to identify the generative principle and way of existence of media conversion storytelling with the phase between the two extremes.
As various conversions between service became practicable due to the development of digital technology and advanced network, the boundaries between media and media, or platforms and platforms are disappearing. In this era of endless convergence and competition between media, media conversion storytelling is receiving attention as a new narrative form.
The transforming aspect of storytelling in accordance with media conversion could be divided into two categories. One is called crossmedia storytelling which is a traditional strategy of media franchise. Based on a successful original work, it expands that work into multimedia by adaptation. The other is called transmedia storytelling which provides different stories for each medium. However each story sections are connected to each other so that it leads the users to enjoy a unified story world by them actively traversing between media. Although crossmedia storytelling and transmedia storytelling are both multi-platform storytelling, crossmedia storytelling 'rewrites' a successful original work depending on the media features, while transmedia storytelling 'adds' and 'creates' new stories.
Notably, there are oppositional qualities in the way of media conversion between crossmedia storytelling and transmedia storytelling. As well-known, the theory of Jakobson matches with Freud's 'condensation' and 'displacement', and these concepts were reinterpreted and incorporated into 'metaphor' and 'metonymy' concepts of Lacan. Metaphor is to create new meaning effects by 'replacing one word with another', and metonymy is a way to find omitted signification by slipping 'from word to word'. In that crossmedia works replaces the story world of original work with new media to cause semantic effects, it is a process of metaphoric sequence. While in that transmedia storytelling works find out the omitted parts of original story and then move them to close media, it is a process of metonymic sequence.
Therefore in this thesis investigated Freudian theory of condensation and displacement in detail to specifically identify the mechanism of metaphoric sequence and metonymic sequence of media conversion storytelling. As a result this thesis figured out that the condensation arouse from omission and selection by polysemy, and that the creation of a new syntagma could be divided into collective figure, composite figure, and common figure.
By applying the above discussion to the process of crossmedia storytelling, this thesis investigated that by sequentially omitting/selecting the plot, characters, and space by polysemy primarily, there occurred a condensation of the story world. It also identified that the scene combination proceeded by similarity, and the character's background stories not connected to main plot in polysemous way were greatly omitted. The condensation mechanism for the creation of a new syntagma was found clearly in the character layer. Therefore this thesis investigated the characters of the original story as a semiotic square based on contrary principles. Based on this, if the characters are placed on a same point or in implicational relationship, only one representative were put forward for condensation and other characters were omitted which generated a collective figure. If the characters were on contradictory or contrary relationships they were generating composite figure. In addition, because the common figure were common features between characters which means abstract features with no figure, it was appearing as a new character by characterization within the adaptation process. By the above discussion, this thesis investigated that the metaphoric sequence of crossmedia storytelling achieved an aesthetic by overdetermination.
Meanwhile, the metonymic displacement of transmedia storytelling can be described as the dynamics of weight fluctuation. In Freudian theory, the displacement proceeds in two ways. The first one is a replacement by implication, and the second one is a transference of psychological stress. The former is a process that an important one hides and a trivial one replaces it, while the latter is a process that a trivial one comes to the fore as an important one. Each of these two types of displacement matches with developer storytelling and user storytelling in transmedia storytelling. Transmedia producers firstly build up a whole story world and then disperse it into several media. That is, they have to construct an important thing first, proceed fragmentation, and then induce users to put the pieces together into a whole picture by participation. Therefore the replacement by implication and transference of psychological stress have identical structure but different orientation, so when the developer storytelling and user storytelling combine completely it becomes an overall storytelling, which presents aesthetics of a unique engagement of interactive storytelling.
So far, this thesis investigated the metaphoric characteristics of crossmedia storytelling and metonymic characteristics of transmedia storytelling by dividing them into layers of author’s creative process, reader/audience’s jouissance process, and the created contents. As a result, this thesis revealed that the writers of crossmedia storytelling were trying variations on the story world to avoid the crisis of set-matching due to the intrinsic intermediation, which was conflicting with the compulsive fandom sticking on the original text and strong satisfaction. Therefore this thesis stressed that we need to go back to fundamental concept of metaphor for successful crossmedia storytelling. In other words, the story of the preceding media and subsequent media have to interpenetrate and negotiate with each other, rather than regard either side as superior, to create a new syntagmatic story. In addition, it was confirmed that it can be realized by the condensation mechanism of omitting and selecting the story elements by polysemy and generation of new syntagma.
Meanwhile, even though the creators of transmedia storytelling are free from the crisis of double, what really matters to them is to maintain the power of imitation continuously. To do this, they have to generate a deficiency of the story world and induce the users, who desire to meet this deficiency, to the next story world. This media-crossing method was teleologically harmonizing with the transmedia storytelling’s fandom, the hysteric subject. Also to successfully materialize the developer’s storytelling and user’s storytelling, there have to be a complete conversion from preceding media to subsequent media and a close maintenance of narrative continuity.
The discussion of demediality in media conversion storytelling finally reaches and may allow a challenging argumentation that 'media is only a transporting machine of the story'. Story is not created newly but rather be rewritten by repetition, extension, expansion, modification, transposition, and quotation across the media. Media is a survival machine of story meme which desires eternal life. Telling the story using plural media, medai conversion storytelling means that it can provide the contents the users want, at any time, and at any where. It could reach more users, and be a probability that more users can be satisfied.
To study the complex phenomena related to media conversion storytelling, this thesis set the crossmedia storytelling and transmedia storytelling as two extremes toward each other and investigated the opposing qualities of them. The aim was to determine the meaning and characteristic of each storytelling based on the difference of two opposing stories. However due to the forced categorization, this thesis may have a limitation that it could not cover the various aspects of media conversion storytelling comprehensively. In addition, as stated at the beginning of the thesis, by putting the metaphorization of metonymy and mytonymization of metaphor out of the question, it may also missed to cover the mixed phenomena of two storytelling modes. Therefore it needs to be complemented by follow-up studies. This thesis hope that it can be a little contribution to the activation of the media conversion storytelling researches and the development of creative practices.
