        Hypoxia Mediates Runt-Related Transcription Factor 2 Expression via Induction of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor in Periodontal Ligament Stem Cells

        Periodontitis is characterized by the loss of periodontal tissues, especially alveolar bone. Common therapies cannot satisfactorily recover lost alveolar bone. Periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs) possess the capacity of self-renewal and multilineage differentiation and are likely to recover lost alveolar bone. In addition, periodontitis is accompanied by hypoxia, and hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) is a master transcription factor in the response to hypoxia. Thus, we aimed to ascertain how hypoxia affects runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2), a key osteogenic marker, in the osteogenesis of PDLSCs. In this study, we found that hypoxia enhanced the protein expression of HIF-1α, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and RUNX2 ex vivo and in situ. VEGF is a target gene of HIF-1α, and the increased expression of VEGF and RUNX2 proteins was enhanced by cobalt chloride (CoCl2, 100 μmol/L), an agonist of HIF-1α, and suppressed by 3-(5′-hydroxymethyl-2′-furyl)-1-benzyl indazole (YC-1, 10 μmol/L), an antagonist of HIF-1α. In addition, VEGF could regulate the expression of RUNX2, as RUNX2 expression was enhanced by human VEGF (hVEGF165) and suppressed by VEGF siRNA. In addition, knocking down VEGF could decrease the expression of osteogenesis-related genes, i.e., RUNX2, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and type I collagen (COL1), and hypoxia could enhance the expression of ALP, COL1, and osteocalcin (OCN) in the early stage of osteogenesis of PDLSCs. Taken together, our results showed that hypoxia could mediate the expression of RUNX2 in PDLSCs via HIF-1α-induced VEGF and play a positive role in the early stage of osteogenesis of PDLSCs

        A 7.6 mW 2 Gb/s Proximity Transmitter for Smartphone-Mirrored Display Applications

        This paper describes a high data rate proximity transmitter design for high resolution smartphone-mirrored display applications. A 2 Gb/s transmitter is designed with a low transmission power of -70 dBm/MHz and a wide bandwidth of nearly 3 GHz. A digital pre-correction method is employed in the transmitter to mitigate the inter-symbol interference problem. A carrier-based digital pulse shaping and a reconfigurable digital envelope generation methods are employed for robust operation by utilizing 20 phases from a 2 GHz phase-locked loop. A 6.5-9.5 GHz transmitter implemented in 65 nm CMOS achieves the maximum data rate of 2 Gb/s, consuming only 7.6 mW from a 1 V supply.

        Two new diphenyl derivatives, named iizukinesA (1) and B (2), along with nine known compounds wereisolated from coastal saline soil derived fungus Aspergillusiizukae. The structures were determined by extensivespectroscopic analysis. Their cytotoxicities were preliminarilyevaluated on HL-60, BEL-7402 and A-549 cell linesby the MTT assay.

        Structural Behavior of Steel Tube and Coupler Scaffolds with Stability Strengthening Details

        The multi-span steel tube and coupler scaffold is one of the main temporary structural forms in building and bridge construction. Given the insufficient research on their bearing capacity and design method, steel tube and coupler scaffolds have frequently collapsed in recent years and have caused serious casualties and economic losses. Through six prototype tests and a numerical analysis, this study investigated the effect of stability strengthening measures, such as vertical X-bracing, horizontal X-bracing, surrounding non-loading area, and lateral wall-tied constraints, on the ultimate bearing capacity and failure mode of multi-span steel tube and coupler scaffolds under a uniformly distributed line load of upper horizontal tubes. Using the finite element numerical analysis verified by the test data, the influence of height-width ratio, structure height, story height, spacing of vertical tubes, X-bracing layout, lateral wall-tied constraints, and surrounding non-loading area on the ultimate bearing capacity of multi-span steel tube and coupler scaffolds was analyzed. Design methods for multi-span steel tube and coupler scaffolds under a uniformly distributed line load of upper horizontal tubes were proposed based on the results of the prototype test and finite element numerical analysis. The reasonability of the design method was verified by the test data and finite element analysis results.

        Experimental study on seismic behavior of two-storey modular structure

        Due to the unique construction method of modular steel buildings (MSBs) with units prefabricated fully off the site and assembled quickly on the site, the inter-module connection for easy operation and overall performance of the system were key issues. However, it was a lack of relevant research on the system-level performance of MSBs. This study investigated the seismic performance of two-storey modular steel structure with a proposed vertical rotary inter-module connection. Three full-scale quasi-static tests, with and without corrugated steel plate and its combination, were carried out to evaluate and compare their seismic behaviour. The hysteretic performance, skeleton curves, ductile performance, stiffness degradation, energy dissipation capacity, and deformation pattern were clarified. The results showed that good ductility and plastic deformation ability of such modular steel structures. Two lateral-force resistance mechanisms with different layout combinations were also discussed in detail. The corrugated steel plate could significantly improve the lateral stiffness and bearing capacity of the modular steel structure. The cooperative working mechanism of modules and inter-module connections was further analyzed. When the lateral stiffness of upper and lower modular structures was close, limited bending moment transfer may be considered for the inter-module connection. While a large lateral stiffness difference existed initially between the upper and lower structures, an obvious gap occurred at the inter-module connection, and this gap may significantly influence the bending moments transferred by the inter-module connections. Meanwhile, several design recommendations of inter-module connections were also given for the application of MSBs.

        Experimental Study on Residual Mechanical Properties of Bolt-Sphere Joints After a Fire

        Through tensile testing of 15 steel bolt-sphere joints and 15 aluminum alloy bolt-sphere joints, infl uencing rules of material type, high temperature and cooling mode on tensile properties of post-fi re bolt-sphere joints were studied, and then failure modes of the joints were determined. According to experimental data, the calculation formula of residual tension capacity of post-fi re bolt-sphere joints was presented. Experimental data indicated that (1) decreased extension on the mechanical properties of aluminum alloy bolt-sphere joints after high temperature in the fi re was signifi cantly higher than that of the steel bolt-sphere joints; (2) when fi re temperature was lower than 800 °C, the tension capacity of steel bolt-sphere joints could be restored by more than 90% after cooling; (3) when fi re temperature was lower than 500 °C, the tension capacity of aluminum alloy bolt-sphere joints could be restored by more than 50% after cooling; (4) bolt-sphere joints could still satisfy the requirement of “strong node and weak member” after a fi re; and (5) material type and fi re temperature were the main factors that infl uenced post-fi re mechanical properties of bolt-sphere joints.

        Comparison between laparoscopic and abdominal radical hysterectomy for stage IB1 and tumor size <2 cm cervical cancer with visible or invisible tumors: a multicentre retrospective study

        Objective: To compare 5-year disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) rates oflaparoscopic radical hysterectomy (LRH) and abdominal radical hysterectomy (ARH) forstage IB1 and tumor size <2 cm with visible or invisible tumors. Methods: We retrospectively compared the oncological outcomes of 1,484 cervical cancerpatients with IB1 and tumor size <2 cm on final pathology, who received ARH (n=899) or LRH(n=585) between January 2004 and December 2016. Patients were divided into visible tumorsubgroup (ARH: n=668, LRH: n=444) and invisible tumor subgroup (ARH: n=231, LRH:n=141) according to tumor type. Results: LRH and ARH showed similar 5-year DFS and OS rates (93.3% vs. 93.1%, p=0.997;96.2% vs. 97.5%, p=0.351) in total study population. LRH was not associated with worse5-year DFS rate (hazard ratio [HR]=0.96; 95% confidence interval [CI]=0.58–1.58; p=0.871)or OS rate (HR=1.37; 95% CI=0.65–2.89; p=0.409) by multivariable analysis. In the visibletumor subgroups, LRH and ARH showed similar 5-year DFS and OS rates (91.9% vs. 91.9%,p=0.933; 95.0% vs. 96.9%, p=0.276), and LRH was not associated with worse 5-year DFS orOS rate (p=0.804, p=0.324). In the invisible tumor subgroups, LRH and ARH also showedsimilar 5-year DFS and OS rates (97.3% vs. 97.1%, p=0.815; 100% vs. 99.5%, p=0.449), andLRH was not associated with worse 5-year DFS rate (p=0.723). Conclusions: Among patients with stage IB1 and tumor size <2 cm, whether the tumor isvisible or not, the oncological outcomes of LRH and ARH among cervical cancer patients arecomparable. This suggests that LRH may be suitable for stage IB1 and tumor size <2 cm withvisible or invisible tumors.Trial Registration: International Clinical Trials Registry Platform Identifier: CHiCTR180017778
