<P><I>Salmonella</I> Enteritidis is the most common cause of salmonellosis in humans in South Korea. It has been recognized that the principal source of human infection with <I>S.</I> Enteritidis is chickens and their products such as meat and eggs. A total of 173 <I>S.</I> Enteritidis isolates from humans (65 isolates) and chickens or their products (108 isolates) were analyzed by antibiotic susceptibility assay, phage typing, and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). Drug resistance was found to streptomycin (32.3%), ampicillin (30.6%), nalidixic acid (30.1%), ticarcillin (30.1%), and tetracycline (28.3%). More than 70% of the isolates were found to be resistant to one or more antibiotics tested. The most frequent patterns of resistant isolates were resistance to nalidixic acid only (28.3%) and resistance to two antibiotics (four combinations; 20.2%). The most predominant phage type (PT) was PT1 (27.2%) followed by PT21 (20.8%) and PT4 (8.7%) in chicken and human isolates. Nineteen different PFGE patterns were found among the 173 isolates, and A1 was the most common PFGE pattern, followed by A6 (17.3%). Most <I>S.</I> Enteritis isolates (except two isolates with patterns B and C) showed similar PFGE patterns that differed by only a few bands. These results show that 2 or 3 subtypes of <I>S.</I> Enteritidis are shared to a large extent by humans and chickens. This implies the possibility of the spread of chicken <I>S.</I> Enteritidis to humans.</P>
A Virtual Optical Encryption System Based on Polarization Optics
Kang-Ning Wu,Yu-Xiang Zheng,Dong-Xu Zhang,Yu-Hui Tao,Rong-Jun Zhang,Liang-Yao Chen 한국물리학회 2012 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.60 No.8
In this paper, an encryption system is proposed based on polarization optics. A modulated image at reference plane was obtained by using a virtual magneto-optical modulator, and the field from the reference plane interfered with that from the information plane having the original image to form an encrypted image. This system not only has the advantages of multiple freedom degrees, high security strength and data manipulation in high-dimension as the traditional optical information processing system but also possesses the advantages of data processing flexibility in the computer information process. Numerical experiments prove that images encrypted by using this system have a high level of security, so it is hard for attackers to analyze the original images.

Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (ST) is one of the most common serovars isolated from humans and animals. It has been suggested that ST infections in Koreans are largely due to the consumption of contaminated pork and beef. To investigate the genotypes, phage types, and antimicrobial resistance patterns for ST isolates of different origins, a total of 70 ST strains, including 19 isolates from humans, 44 isolates from pigs, and 6 isolates from cattle, were analyzed using pulsedfield gel electrophoresis (PFGE), phage typing, and antimicrobial susceptibility tests. Forty-three distinct PFGE patterns were generated from 70 ST isolates, which were grouped into 14 PFGE groups (from A to N) at the level of 75% similarity. The most prevalent group was the A (A1-A17 subtypes) group, encompassing 54.5% (38/70) of ST isolates. ST isolates from pigs and cattle mostly belong to groups A and L, whereas ST isolates from humans mostly belong to groups F and C. Antimicrobial susceptibility tests using 11 antimicrobial agents showed that resistance to tetracycline (TE) (81.4%) was highly prevalent, followed by streptomycin (S) (64.3%) and nalidixic acid (NA) (31.4%) resistance. A total of seventeen antimicrobial resistance patterns were observed. Only 8.6% of isolates, including a reference strain, were susceptible to all antimicrobial agents tested. The most prevalent resistance pattern was TE-S (37.1%), which was seen in 66.6% of bovine, 40.8% of swine and 21.1% of human isolates. Three ST isolates from humans (15.9%) showed resistance to 7-8 antimicrobials. The most predominant phage type (PT) was U302 (64.3%), followed by DT170 (10.0%). PFGE types did not coincide with antimicrobial resistance patterns and phage types; therefore, the combination of those types allowed for further differentiation between tested ST isolates.

In this paper, a high-performance geopolymer grouting material based on slag and fly ash was developed and the properties were investigated. The fluidity, setting time, compressive strength, water resistance and drying shrinkage were studied to evaluate the workability and mechanical properties of geopolymer grouting material (GGM). X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were used to analyze the microstructural performance of GGM. The results show that the concentration of alkaline activator and slag content plays a significant role in properties of GGM and the optimum formula has been obtained. In the course of the study, the effect of concentration of alkaline activator and the content of slag on the workability and mechanical performance of GGM is different. All properties of geopolymer were considered comprehensively, the slag content and concentration of alkaline activator were 70% and 37%, which indicated that the geopolymer grouting material made from slag and fly ash could meet the requirements of concrete reinforcement well and was friendly to the environment.

Hydatid disease imposing serious threat on human health and great loss in live¬stock pastoralism remains a major public health problem in western China. To assess and monitor the effect of control program on transmission dynamics, we used the prevalence of cystic echinococcosis in slaughtered sheep at slaughterhouse as an indicator during the period of 2007 to 2013 in Emin County, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China. The results showed a significant decline trend of prevalence in all age groups during the 7 years when the control program was implemented; particularly, the rate was reduced by 72% after first 3 years. Among the sheep slaughtered, the age distribution evidenced that the prevalence increased significantly as the sheep grew older. The baseline data indicated that the rate was 4.5% at the age <1, 6.7% at age 2~, and reached to the highest 17.9% at age ≥4 years. Earlier response to the intervention pressure was seen in the sheep at the younger age. Significant decline started from 2008 at the age <1, from 2009 at age of 1~, 2010 at 2~ to 3~, and the latest, in 2012 at age ≥4. This study demonstrated that the prevalence of cystic echinococcosis in slaughtered sheep may be used as an indicator to assess and monitor the transmission status during and after control program providing information for betterment of performance to sustain control strength.

<P>MicroRNA (miRNA) deficiency impairs the generation of T follicular helper (Tfh) cells, but the contribution of individual miRNAs to this phenotype remains poorly understood. In this study, we performed deep sequencing analysis of miRNAs expressed in Tfh cells and identified a five-miRNA signature. Analyses of mutant mice deficient of these miRNAs revealed that miR-22 and miR-183/96/182 are dispensable, but miR-155 is essential for the generation and function of Tfh cells. miR-155 deficiency led to decreased proliferation specifically at the late stage of Tfh cell differentiation and reduced CD40 ligand (CD40L) expression on antigen-specific CD4+ T cells. Mechanistically, miR-155 repressed the expression of Peli1, a ubiquitin ligase that promotes the degradation of the NF-κB family transcription factor c-Rel, which controls cellular proliferation and CD40L expression. Therefore, our study identifies a novel miR-155–Peli1–c-Rel pathway that specifically regulates Tfh cell generation and function.</P>
