Chitosan is the deacetylated product of chitin. Chitosan and its derivatives have many properties that make them attractive for a wide variety of health applications. We reported recently that water soluble chitooligosaccharides have hepatoprotective effect on ethanol induced liver injury in the mouse. The current study examined the effect of water soluble chitooligosaccharides on CC1₄-induced liver injury in rats. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were orally treated with CC1₄without or with administration of 5% chitooligosaccharides. After 5 weeks after CC1₄treatment, the histological sections and the expression of mRNA of interleukin-12(IL-12), hepatocyte growth factor(HGF), and tumor necrosis factor(TNF- ) were examined. The liver section of rats supplemented with chitooligosaccharides showed attenuated effects of the necrosis, steatosis, cirrhosis compared with those of non-supplemented rats. The level of TNF- mRNA in CC1₄-treated rats were higher than those in the rats supplemented with chitooligosaccharides, while the levels of IL-12 and HGF mRNA were higher in the rats supplemented with chitooligosaccharides than those of in CC1₄-treated rats. These findings suggested that water soluble chitooligosaccharides may have a hepatoprotective activity against CCl₄-induced liver injury in rats.
양어용 사료첨가제로서 감귤발효액 (EM-Fermented Orange)의 항산화특성

Mandarine orange (Citrus unshiu Marc.) only added with sugar was fermented by effective microorganisms (EM). called "EM-fermented orange". EM was mainly composed of lactic acid bacteria. phototrophic bacteria and yeast. As pH of EM-fermented orange reached 3.5 to 4.0 in the course of fermentation. the incubation was stopped. and then. EM-fermented orange was preservable at room temperature for about 6 months. Composition and concentration of free amino acids in EM-fermented orange were analyzed. Concentration of total amino acids was 167 mg/l. and the relative content of carnosine (β-alanyl-L-histidine) which was well known as a kind of antioxidant materials was very high. 41%. In addition. crude extract showing antioxidant activity could be obtained from EM-fermented orange using some organic solvents. The antioxidant activity of the crude extract was equivalent to about 9% of that of vitamin E by the use of 1.1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method. It was suggested that EM-fermented orange having antioxidant characteristics could promote the health of fish.

In this paper, the process effect on the RMS roughness of the $HfO_2$ thin films grown by metal organic molecular beam epitaxy was investigated. The measured RMS roughness is examined to characterize the surface morphology. In order to analyze the factor effects, the significant factors of both the main and the interaction effects were extracted through the effect analysis. In order to compare the regression model with the variable transformation, the effect of each factor and the model efficiency are calculated. The methodology can allow us to analyze the effects between the process parameters related to the process variability.

<P>This study reports the use of a kernel-based process model, consisting of kernel partial least squares regression and kernel ridge regression, to model etch rate and uniformity in a plasma etch process. In order to characterize the plasma etch process, a 2<SUP>4 - 1</SUP> fractional factorial design was implemented on the process parameters: CHF<SUB>3</SUB> flow rate, CF<SUB>4</SUB> flow rate, RF power, and pressure. In this modeling, both functional data and <I>in situ</I> optical emission spectroscopy (OES) data associated with the etch response were used to formulate the model. In an effort to effectively deal with the complexity of the data, wavelet transformation with vertical-energy-thresholding (VET) shrinkage procedures were used to reduce the dimensions of the functional data. In addition, a Bayesian information criterion (BIC) was used to select the best subset to improve the model predictions. The proposed kernel-based approaches were evaluated by comparing them to conventional neural networks (NNs)-based modeling and linear-based regression techniques. Comparisons revealed that the proposed approach exhibits an improved prediction over NNs and linear-based models. Implicated in the study is a detection of process fault patterns by combining the kernel-based modeling, wavelet transformation with VET, and BIC.</P>

This paper presents that the modeling to predict the characteristics with respect to the performance of solenoid embedded inductors manufactured by LTCC process via the nonlinear regression model based on the quasi-Newton method. In order to reduce the runs, the design of experiments (DOE) was used to generate the design space. The nonlinear process models were constructed by the piecewise regression model based on the quasi-Newton method for estimating the model coefficient with the break point on the statistical confidence intervals. Those models were verified by the model accuracy checking based on the assumption statistically.

<B>ABSTRACT</B><P>A blocking enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) with a baculovirus-expressed structural protein was developed for the detection of antibodies to foot-and-mouth disease virus type A. It exhibited 99% specificity with a cutoff of 53% inhibition. Its sensitivity was comparable to the sensitivities of the virus neutralization test and the liquid-phase blocking ELISA, indicating its potential as an alternative assay.</P>
