        Does Listening to Tinnitus Frequency-Filtered Music Relieve Tinnitus?

        Background and Objectives: Tinnitus frequency-filtered music therapy aims to restore lateral inhibition to reverse tonotopic reorganization in the auditory cortex. Although the tinnitus-relieving effect of this therapy has been investigated, the results remain controversial. We performed a prospective, randomized, controlled double-blind study to determine the tinnitus-suppressing effect of tinnitus frequency-filtered music therapy.Subjects and Methods: The study included 90 participants who were randomly categorized into an experimental group that listened to tinnitus frequency-filtered music and a control group that listened to music from which a random frequency was removed. The Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) score and measures of tinnitus loudness, daily awareness, and tinnitus-induced annoyance were evaluated at the initial visit and at 3 and 6 months (final follow-up). The rates of improvement in THI scores in the two groups were also recorded.Results: All measured variables showed significant improvement in both groups, except the matched tinnitus loudness and minimal masking level. However, no significant intergroup differences were observed in the amount of improvement in THI scores and any other variable. The rates of improvement in THI scores were higher in the control group at 3 and 6 months.Conclusions: Listening to tinnitus frequency-filtered music reduced tinnitus-induced handicaps; however, this approach was not significantly better than listening to music from which a random frequency was removed.

      • Clinical characteristics of females with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in Korea

        Tobacco smoking is established as a major risk factor of COPD. Over the years COPD has been considered as disease in men, however, the number of female COPD is increasing, especially in developing countries. The clinical characteristics of female COPD patients are not well known, particularly in Asia. We investigated the clinical characteristics of female COPD patients with large Korean COPD cohort. We analyzed the data from the Korea COPD Subgroup Study Cohort Study, whichis a multicenter observational study that includes 1662 patients who were enrolled from 45 tertiary and university-affiliated hospitals from December 2011 to October 2014. A total of 1662 patients were included in this study, 146 (8.8%) were females and 1516 (91.2%) were males. Females were less likely to be smoker, and shown to have more exposure to passive smoking and more exposure to biomass. Bronchiectasis and respiratory infection in childhood also appeared significantly higher infemale COPD, indicating that these also affected female COPD occurrence. Depression was significantly more common in female COPD. Although it was not statistically significant, severe exacerbations occurred frequently in female COPD patients, and the rate of lung function decline also tended to be faster in female COPD.The mMRC score, SGRQ-C score and CAT score of females were significantly higher than males respectively. Female COPD patients were more likely to report activity limitations, sleep disturbances and energy shortages. Female COPD patients were shown to higher FEV1% pred. and FEV1/FVC % than in male patients. Passive smoking, exposure to biomass, bronchiectasis and respiratory infection in childhood are judged to be important causative factors in female COPD patients. Severe exacerbations and rate of decline tended to higher in female COPD. In addition, the incidence of depression were high on female COPD and respiratory symptoms were more severe in female COPD.

        STEAM 심화과정 교사연수에 참여한 초·중등교사들의 STEAM에 대한 인식 비교

        본 연구는 우리나라의 STEAM교육을 이끌고 있는 교사들을 대상으로 STEAM에 대한 인식을 조사하고, 학교급별 차이를 분석하고자 하였다. 이에 STEAM 심화과정 교사연수에 참여한 초·중등교사 326명을 대상으로 STEAM교육에 대한 교사들의 이해 정도, STEAM 교수효능감, STEAM의 현장적용의 수월성 정도에 대한 인식을 묻는 설문조사를 실시하였다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, STEAM 심화과정에 참여한 교사들임에도 불구하고 상당수의 초·중등교사들이 STEAM에 대해 표상적인 이해수준을 보여주고 있었으며, 중등 교사들이 이러한 경향이 더욱 두드러졌다. 둘째, ‘STEAM 교수효능감’, ‘STEAM의 현장적용 수월성 정도’에 대한 인식 모두 초등교사가 중등교사보다 높게 나타나, 초등교사들이 중등교사들에 비해 STEAM에 대해 긍정적으로 인식하고 있었다. 셋째, 초·중등교사들 모두 STEAM 교수효능감은 비교적 높게 나타났으나, 현장적용에 대한 수월성에 대한 인식은 낮게 나타나면서 효능감과 실행에서의 괴리감이 있음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 초중등교사의 수월성에 대한 인식의 차이를 바탕으로 학교급별 교사들이 STEAM 실행에 있어서 느끼는 어려움에 차이가 있음을 알 수 있었다. 이상의 연구 결과를 바탕으로, STEAM교육의 현장 확산을 위해서는 교사교육의 필요성과 초중등 학교급의 차별화된 접근이 필요하며, STEAM 교수 실행을 위한 실제적 지원이 이루어져야 함을 제안할 수 있다. In an effort to better understand the status of the Korean STEAM education and to provide some guidelines for future STEAM in Korea, this study investigated the perceptions on STEAM education by the primary and secondary school teachers who participated in the advanced STEAM teacher training program. These in-service teachers were expected to play leading roles in STEAM education. A total of 326 teachers responded to the survey that inquired how they would define STEAM education, to what extent they had teaching efficacy about STEAM, and how they considered the expediency of applying STEAM in their classes. The findings were as follows. First, even though the teachers were supposed to be pioneers for STEAM education, approximately 30% of the teachers did not have sufficient understanding about STEAM education, which is the case for the secondary teacher more than the primary teachers. Second, the primary teachers had higher “teaching efficacy about STEAM” and more positive perceptions about applying STEAM education than the secondary teachers. And third, there was a considerable gap between the teachers’ beliefs and practices about STEAM. The scores of the teachers’ teaching efficacy were high, while the teachers evaluated that implementing STEAM into their own classes was not easy. As a result, it can be suggested that in order to improve STEAM in Korea, it is necessary to employ different approaches considering the level of schools and provide more practical supports for teachers who implement STEAM in their classes.

        Diagnostic Accuracy of Working Memory Tasks Depending on Scoring Unit and Condition in Preschool Children

        배경 및 목적: 비단어따라말하기, 문장따라말하기, 매트릭스는 언어능력의 기저요인으로 주목 받아온 작업기억의 각 하위체계를 평가하기 위한 과제로, 많은 선행연구들과 임상에서 사용되어 왔다. 그러나 각 과제의 채점단위 또는 수행조건이 일치되지 않아왔던 바, 본 연구에서는 각 과제별로 언어장애를 보다 정확하고 효과적으로 판별할 수 있는 방식을 재검토하고 정확한 시행방법을 제시하고자 한다. 방법: 본 연구는 5-6세의 어휘발달지체 아동(N=40)과 일반 아동(N=40)을 대상으로 비단어따라말하기 및 문장따라말하기의 채점단위 및 매트릭스 과제의 수행조건에 따른 진단정확도를 민감도, 특이도, 양성우도비 및 음성우도비를 통하여 분석하였다. 결과: 판별분석 결과, 비단어따라말하기 과제는 음절 단위 채점방식에 비해 낱말 단위 채점방식이, 문장따라말하기 과제는 어절 단위 채점방식에 비해 문장 단위 채점방식의 진단정확도가 더욱 높은 것으로 나타났다. 매트릭스 과제는 집단 간 수행력 차이와 판별분석 결과가 순행 및 역행 조건 모두에서 유의하지 않았다. 논의 및 결론: 비단어따라말하기 과제 및 문장따라말하기 과제는 시간적 효율성이 높은 채점 방식이 진단정확도도 높은 것으로 나타나 그 임상적 효용성을 입증하였다. Objectives: The purpose of the current study was to examine the diagnostic accuracy of working memory (WM) tasks, including nonword repetition (NWR), sentence repetition (SR), and matrix tasks, as clinically efficient diagnostic tools depending on the scoring systems and task condition. Methods: Forty children with vocabulary delay (VD group) and 40 typically developing children (TD group) were administered a series of WM tasks (NWR, SR, and matrix tasks). Different scoring units were applied to each task (syllable vs. word for NWR task and word vs. sentence for SR task) while different conditions (forward matrix vs. backward matrix) were used for the matrix task. Separate discriminant function analyses were conducted with the scores calculated by the different scoring units or the different condition of the tasks as predictors. Results: Multiple discriminant function analyses for the NWR task yielded word units with higher overall classification values than syllable units, whereas for the SR task sentence units had a higher overall classification value than word units. For the matrix task, none of the conditions reached the level of significance in the discriminant function analyses. Conclusion: The results in this study support the diagnostic accuracy of the NWR task with word units and the SR task with sentence units in discriminating among the VD group and the TD group. However, caution should be used when regarding these matrix tasks as an accurate diagnostic tool, especially in young children.

        STEAM 심화과정 교사연수 프로그램 개발 및 운영

        본 논문은 융합적 사고와 창의적 문제해결력을 지닌 인재 양성을 목표로 시작된 STEAM 교육의 현장확산을 위한 교사연수 중 심화과정 교사연수 프로그램의 개발과정 및 운영 결과를 바탕으로 STEAM 교사연수에 대한 시사점을 고찰하고자 한다. STEAM 심화과정 교사 연수 프로그램은 교사들의 STEAM 역량 강화를 위하여 개발되었다. 총 60시간(4학점)의 직무연수로, 집합연수 38시간, 온라인 12시간, 현장적용 5시간, 성과발표 5시간으로 구성(3차년도 기준)하였다. 집합연수는 강의, 멘토교사수업, 실험실습 및 랩탐방, STEAM 수업자료 개발을 위한 조별활동, 포스터발표회로 구성되었다. 온라인 연수는 추가 강의 이수와 지속적인 교사 커뮤니티 활동을 이어갈 수 있도록 구성되었다. 또한 집합연수와 온라인 연수를 통해 개발된 STEAM 수업자료의 현장적용을 의무화하였다. 마지막으로 성과발표는 우수 수업 사례 발표를 통해 교사들이 STEAM 교수 경험을 공유할 수있도록 하였다. 2012-2014 동안 서울, 경기, 인천, 강원, 제주 지역의 초중등교사 약 700명이 본 연수를 이수하였다. 설문 조사 결과를 바탕 으로 지속적으로 프로그램의 세부 내용 및 구성을 개선해나가면서 연수참여자들의 연수에 대한 만족도를 향상시켰다. 또한 본 연수 프로그램은 교사들의 STEAM에 대한 이해를 높이고, 자료개발과 현장 적용을 통해 교사들의 STEAM 역량을 높이는데 효과적이었음을 알수 있었다. 본 연수는 앞으로 이와 유사한 STEAM 교사연수 프로그램의 개발 및 운영에 참고가 될 수 있을 것이다. The purpose of this study is to investigate implications for future STEAM education by analyzing the surveys by the in-service teachers who participated in the Advanced STEAM Teacher Training Program(ASTTP) for raising interests and understanding of science and technology and nurturing STEAM literacy and problem-solving ability of students. ASTTP was developed for promoting ``teacher competence for STEAM.`` ASTTP is a 60-hour program(4 credits), which includes offline intensive course of 38 hours, online training course of 12 hours, a course of implementation at schools for 5 hours, and a workshop for 5 hours (based on the 2014 program). For the offline intensive course, teachers take various professional development classes and activities, such as open-laboratory tours, advanced experiments, mentoring programs, and team projects as well as lectures on diverse disciplines. For the online course, teachers take online classes freely while they are encouraged to work with other teachers in groups. After taking both online and offline courses, the teachers are required to implement their STEAM lesson plans in their classrooms. Finally at the workshop, some selected teachers share how successfully they have implemented STEAM education. About 700 teachers have successfully taken the program from 2012 to 2014. Based on the surveys by the teachers, the program has been modified and improved. Our analysis shows increased professional development in STEAM education for the participating teachers. This study can provide some implication and helpful insights for people who need to develop and manage teacher training programs for STEAM education and other education programs in general.

      • Prevalence and Factors Associated with Neck and Jaw Muscle Modulation of Tinnitus

        <P>Abstract</P><P>Forceful contractions of neck and jaw muscles have consistently been shown to modulate tinnitus and can be used to screen patients who are responsive to somatic stimulation and, therefore, optimal candidates for somatosensory-based treatment. To identify the factors associated with somatic modulation of tinnitus, 163 patients underwent 19 neck and jaw maneuvers after an extensive physiological and audiological profile was compiled. Overall, tinnitus was modulated in 57.1% of ears tested. Unilateral tinnitus showed greater prevalence of modulation. Neck maneuvers generally decreased tinnitus loudness, whereas jaw maneuvers increased loudness. Female gender and buzzing tinnitus were associated with a high prevalence of modulation and a decrease in tinnitus loudness. Loud tinnitus and low-pitched tonal tinnitus were associated with exacerbation of the condition as a result of somatic testing. Use of these characteristics to select optimal candidates for somatosensory-based tinnitus therapies may be essential for the development of an effective approach for tinnitus treatment.</P><P>Copyright © 2013 S.         In case of Central heating facility like as Distric heating user’s facility, Variable speed drives are commonly used to control the speed of pumps. The use of variable speed controlled pumps instead of valve adjustment like as DPV has shown to reduce the energy consumption of pumps. but if the idea to control speed of pumps isn’t effective operation, the expansive variable speed drives cannot reduce electric energy cost. In this study the actual energy consumption of heating circulation pump with different installation position of differential pressure transmitters are compared. A variable speed control using differential pressure at the long-distance building and that at the facility room was applied to experimental field. From the experimental results, it was concluded that by using the variable speed control with the long-distance building △p setting(0.6bar), the energy consumption was reduced by up to 72.6% in comparison of constant speed control. On the other hand it was concluded that by using the variable speed control with the facility room △p setting(0.8bar), the energy consumption was reduced by up to 59.5% in comparison of constant speed control. Therefore, the variable speed control using the differential pressure at the long-distance building is recommendable.

        Recently, due to the construction of the metropolitan area and spread of new towns, application of district heating system has been increased. Since installation of facility for secondary user is usually being performed by construction companies or contractors, the systematic and efficient operation of user facility has not yet been set up. In this study, therefore, the effect of the speed control of the inverter on the heating and energy saving was investigated by using existing facilities. A variable speed control using differential pressure at the farthest building of heating system was applied to experimental field. From the experimental results, it was concluded that by using the variable speed control with smaller △p setting(0.6bar), the power consumption was drastically reduced by up to 73%. Therefore, the variable speed control using the differential pressure at the farthest building is recommendable, and a heating by variable speed control using the required appropriate minimum differential pressure was available.
