Improvement of the Quality of Dried Wild Vegetables by Micro Oil Sprayed Thermal Air Technique

        Yonghyun Kim(Yonghyun Kim),Yunmi Park(Yunmi Park),Chul-Woo Kim(Chul-Woo Kim),Uk Lee(Uk Lee),Hyun Ji Eo(Hyun Ji Eo) 한국자원식물학회 2022 한국자원식물학회지 Vol.35 No.6

Wild vegetables, such as Cirsium setidens, and Aster scaber, are commonly distributed as dried materials because the wild vegetables lose their freshness quickly after harvest and distribution. Dried wild vegetables require rehydration to use as a food ingredient, and the quality of rehydrated wild vegetables is affected by pre-drying and drying methods. Here, we introduce the newly developed pre-drying and drying method, termed “micro oil sprayed thermal air (MOTA) technique”. The three wild vegetables processed by the MOTA technique showed improved rehydration rate and reduced time to achieve maximum rehydration rate. Color characteristics were also improved in C. setidens. These results indicate that the MOTA technique improves the overall quality of rehydrated wild vegetables. It is expected that our findings could enhance the marketability of dried wild vegetables by improving overall quality and reducing preparation time.

      • Wnt activation is implicated in glioblastoma radioresistance.

        Kim, Yonghyun,Kim, Kang Ho,Lee, Jeena,Lee, Young-Ae,Kim, Misuk,Lee, Se Jeong,Park, Kernyu,Yang, Heekyoung,Jin, Juyoun,Joo, Kyeung Min,Lee, Jeongwu,Nam, Do-Hyun United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology [e 2012 Laboratory investigation Vol.92 No.3

Glioblastoma (GBM) patients have dismal median survival even with the most rigorous treatments currently available. Radiotherapy is the most effective non-surgical therapy for GBM patients; however, patients succumb due to tumor recurrence within a year. To develop a curative therapeutic approach, we need to better understand the underlying molecular mechanism of radiation resistance in GBM. Towards this goal, we developed an in vivo orthotopic GBM model system that mimics the radiation response of human GBM, using both established-GBM cell line and patient-derived freshly dissociated GBM specimen. In-vivo ionizing radiation (IR) treatment prolonged the survival of mice with intracranical tumor derived from U373MG, but failed to prevent tumor recurrence. U373MG and GBM578 cells isolated after in-vivo IR (U373-IR and 578-IR) were more clonogenic and enriched with stem cell-like characteristics, compared with mock-treated control tumor cells. Transcriptomic analyses and quantitative real-time reverse-transcription PCR analyses using these matched GBM cells before and after radiation treatment revealed that Wnt pathways were preferentially activated in post-IR GBM cells. U373-IR cells and 578-IR were enriched with cells positive for both active β-catenin (ABC) and Sox2 population, and this subpopulation was further increased after additional in-vitro radiation treatment, suggesting that radiation resistance of GBM is mediated due, in part, to the activation of stem cell-associated pathways including Wnt. Finally, pharmacological and siRNA inhibition of Wnt pathway significantly decreased the survival and clonogenicity of GBM cells and reduced their ABC(+)/Sox2(+) population. Together, these data suggest that Wnt activation is a molecular mechanism to confer GBM radioresistance and an important therapeutic target.

Enhanced electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction performance with Pt nanocluster catalysts supported on microporous graphene-like 3D carbon

        Kim, Youngmin,Lee, Daewon,Kwon, Yonghyun,Kim, Tae-Wan,Kim, Kyoungsoo,Kim, Hyung Ju Elsevier 2019 Journal of Electroanalytical Chemistry Vol.838 No.-

Abstract

Here we report an efficient catalyst design strategy to develop high performance Pt-based electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Finely-dispersed Pt nanoclusters supported on microporous graphene-like 3D carbon (Pt/MGTC) having a Pt size of ca. 1.3nm were synthesized by zeolite template-based carbon synthesis and subsequent Pt impregnation. The Pt/MGTC catalyst demonstrated about 2 times higher ORR activity than that of commercial Pt/C. In addition, the Pt/MGTC showed relatively stable ORR performance, maintaining an activity higher than that of Pt/C. This performance enhancement of electrocatalytic ORR on Pt/MGTC was attributed to the significant increase of Pt active sites and the efficient charge transport in Pt/MGTC.

Highlights

Highly-dispersed Pt nanoclusters supported on microporous graphene-like 3D carbon (Pt/MGTC) were synthesized.

The Pt/MGTC led to improved catalytic performances for electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction.

This performance enhancement was attributed to many Pt active sites and efficient charge transport in Pt/MGTC.

      • Image Fusion of Spectrally Nonoverlapping Imagery Using SPCA and MTF-Based Filters

Kim, Yonghyun,Kim, Minho,Choi, Jaewan,Kim, Yongil IEEE 2017 IEEE geoscience and remote sensing letters Vol.14 No.12

Most spaceborne sensors have an inevitable tradeoff between spatial and spectral resolutions. This is a typical ill-posed inverse problem in the field of image fusion. To solve this problem, this letter proposes an image fusion method using spatial principal component analysis and modulation transfer function based filters. The key behind the proposed fusion method is to efficiently estimate the missing spatial details by considering the spatial structures of the low-resolution multispectral (MS) imagery. Also, this letter proposes a newly developed injection gain model to resolve the local and global dissimilarity between panchromatic and MS imageries, which could prevent over-and under-injections. Finally, spatial details, optimized to be injected into the MS images, were constructed and paired with the developed injection gain model to produce high-resolution MS images. Two data sets acquired by WorldView-2 are employed for validation. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed fusion method generates high-quality imagery in terms of both qualitative and quantitative standards.

      • Paddy Field Mapping Using Topographic and Scattering Features of PolSAR Data

Kim, Yonghyun,Oh, Jaehong,Kim, Duk-jin,Kim, Yongil IEEE 2017 IEEE geoscience and remote sensing letters Vol.14 No.4

Irrigated rice fields in Asia have a distinct topography and scattering mechanisms. Because of these factors, many studies using radar backscattering information have been conducted to improve the mapping accuracy; however, relatively little attention has been paid to the topographic features (TF) provided by polarimetric synthetic aperture Radar (PolSAR) data. To address this issue, this letter presents a simple rice field mapping method in its late-vegetative stage using both the TF and scattering features (SF) of the PolSAR data. First, two TF, the polarization orientation angle and the dominant beta angle from the PolSAR data, were analyzed with respect to the slope from a digital elevation model. The results indicated that this feature pair had a moderately high correlation. As a result, flat areas were easily extracted using these two TF. Second, to use the SF of rice in the late-vegetative stage, the copolarized ratio and the copolarized phase difference were simply combined to map only paddy fields, of which scattering was dominated by the double-bounce scattering caused by the ground and canopy reflection. The results using C-band Radarsat-2 data were compared with a support vector machine classifier and demonstrated that the proposed mapping method provided an overall better performance. The proposed method might also be efficiently applied, with modification, for the aforementioned purpose in inaccessible areas.

      • Preparation and Characterization of Small Gelatin Nanoparticles with Stable Size Distributions

( Yonghyun Gwon ),( Sunho Park ),( Sujin Kim ),( Daun Kim ),( Ayoun Kim ),( Jangho Kim ) 한국농업기계학회 2019 한국농업기계학회 학술발표논문집 Vol.24 No.2

The conventional two-step desolvation method was modified for the fabrication of small gelatin nanoparticles (GNPs). The technique was based on the natural phenomenon where with decreasing temperature, the compression between the molecules of substances increases and the volume shrinks. The average size of the fabricated small GNPs was less than 100 nm and their gelatin properties (including non-cytotoxicity) were well maintained. The drug release profiles of the GNPs were confirmed, for which a simple mathematical model based on the conventional diffusion equation was proposed. There was a burst of drug release in the first 3 days, with different release profiles according to the concentration of model drugs loaded onto the GNPs. It was also demonstrated that the drug release profiles of the proposed mathematical model were consistent with the experimental results. Our work proposes that these small GNPs could be used as efficient small material delivery platforms for various biomedical (e.g., medical drugs) and agriculture (e.g., pesticides) applications.

Practice patterns and clinical significance of use of capsule endoscopy in suspected and established Crohn’s disease

( Yonghyun Kim ),( Seong Ran Jeon ),( Sang Myung Choi ),( Hyun Gun Kim ),( Tae Hee Lee ),( Jun-hyung Cho ),( Yunho Jung ),( Wan Jung Kim ),( Bong Min Ko ),( Jin-oh Kim ),( Joon Sung Lee ),( Moon Sung 대한장연구학회 2017 Intestinal Research Vol.15 No.4

Background/Aims: Although the role of capsule endoscopy (CE) in Crohn’s disease (CD) has expanded, CE is not used routinely for diagnosing and evaluating CD in Korea. We aimed to investigate current patterns of practice and evaluate the clinical significance of the use of CE in CD in Korean patients. Methods: Among 651 CE procedures performed for various indications, we retrospectively analyzed the medical records of patients who underwent CE in 57 cases of suspected CD (sCD) and 14 cases of established CD (eCD). Results: In the sCD group, CE was most commonly used for the initial diagnosis of CD (54.4%). Capsule retention was found in only 1 patient in the eCD group (1/71, 1.4%). In the sCD group, 28.1% of patients were diagnosed with CD on the basis of CE findings; other diseases diagnosed included tuberculous enteritis (7.0%), non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug-induced enteropathy (5.3%), and other enteritis (17.5%). Only 11.5% of patients with eCD (14/122) underwent CE. The indication for CE in the 14 patients with eCD was to assess disease extent and activity. The overall diagnostic yield of CE was 59.7%. Therapeutic strategies were changed in 70.2% of patients in the sCD group and 50% of those in the eCD group based on CE findings. Conclusions: In clinical practice, CE was most commonly indicated for the initial diagnosis of CD and was not generally performed in patients with eCD. CE appears to be an effective diagnostic modality for evaluating sCD and is useful for determining therapeutic strategies for patients with sCD and those with eCD. (Intest Res 2017;15:467-474)

‘고난의 행군기’ 북한 군대의 사회적 역할 연구

        김용현(Kim Yonghyun),한승대(Han Seungdae) 부경대학교 인문사회과학연구소 2016 인문사회과학연구 Vol.17 No.2

This study would investigate the social roles of the Korean People’s Army by each type during the Arduous March Time and their implications. The Rodong Sinmun was used as the main analysis data of the study. What should be noted in the appearance of the military-first policy after the Arduous March is a change in ‘the Main Force of the Revolution.’ The change from ‘the laboring classes’ to the ‘Korean People's Army’ means that the status and role of the army has increased in building socialism. In particular, in the extreme crisis of the system, the Arduous March, the army was the only controllable organization. During this time, the army’s role was emphasized in the military aid to civil authorities and the domain of everyday life. The army was the most exemplary subject, and its role was noticeable in the construction and agricultural sectors. The army was the subject that actively participated in the construction of the historic sites of the revolution after Kim Il-sung died. Through this, the North Korean Army came to take on roles in the construction of the economy and as a model of political ideology, including the protection of the existing system. Consequently, emphasizing the position and the role of the army has caused issues such as the rigidity of the system and the reinforcement of the military social order.
