Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is recognized one of the leading metabolic diseases globally, and the younger age population with the disease is rapidly growing, especially in developed countries. Since there has been no approved medicine, losing weight is known to be the only best remedy to control or reverse the disease. Recently, the field of microbiome has attracted much attention to offer more practical choices for patients. Here, we provide experimental evidence that Streptococcus thermophilus LM1012 (LM1012), a safe probiotic strain, is effective for improving NAFLD indexes. In the methionine-choline deficient (MCD) diet induced C57BL/6 mouse model, administration of LM1012 promoted marked reductions of aspartate transaminase (23.8%), total bilirubin (27.8%), hydroxycholesterol (64.2%), triglyceride (29.7%) and IL-1β (68.3%) compared to the MCD diet alone group. Also, the histopathological data imply that LM1012 inhibited fat accumulation and inflammation in the liver, which are the key biomarkers for progression of the disease. Together, these findings suggest that human consumption of LM1012 as a healthy nutritional supplement, may be helpful in reducing the risk of liver damages in NAFLD patients.

The objective of this study was to investigate the associations between the prevalence of overweight and obesity and the degree of adherence to the Korean Dietary Action Guides for Children (KDAGC). In a cross-sectional study based on a child care center-based survey in Seoul, Korea, we collected parental-reported questionnaires (n = 2,038) on children’s weight and height, frequency of fruit and vegetable consumption, and the quality of dietary and activity behaviors based on the 2009 KDAGC Adherence Index (KDAGCAI) which was developed as a composite measure of adherence to the KDAGC. Overweight and obesity were determined according to age- and sex-specific BMI percentile from the 2007 Korean national growth chart. Associations were assessed with generalized linear models and polytomous logistic regression models. Approximately 17.6 % of Korean preschool children were classified as overweight or obese. Obese preschoolers had lower adherence to the KDAGCAI compared to those with lean/normal weight. Preschoolers with a high quality of dietary and activity behaviors had a 51% decreased odds ratio (OR) of being obese (highest vs. lowest tertile of KDAGCAI-score, 95% CI 0.31, 0.78; P = 0.001); the associations were more pronounced among those who were older (P = 0.048) and lived in lower income households (P = 0.014). A greater frequency of vegetable consumption, but not fruit, was associated with a borderline significant reduction in the prevalence of obesity. Our findings support the association between obesity prevention and high compliance with the Korean national dietary and activity guideline among preschool children.
Phenolic-modified cationic polymers as coagulants for microplastic removal

Owing to the potential toxicological threat to the environment and human health associated withmicroplastics, researchers have increasingly focused on microplastic removal in wastewater treatment. Inspired by natural processes, metal–phenolic coordination bonds have been applied to microplasticcoagulation using surface phenolic-modified beads. The scope of candidate materials for cationic polymerand phenolic molecules involved in the coagulation process was expanded for surface modification, yieldinga high removal efficiency (>90%) of polystyrene beads. To reduce the complexity of the two-materialtreatment approach, tannic acid–chitosan conjugates were synthesized as a single coagulant – phenolicmodifiedcationic polymer. The polymers were effectively modified on the surface of the polystyrenebeads, and they demonstrated dramatic coagulation behavior within 5 min following the introductionof FeCl3 additive. The removal efficiency of the beads exceeded 80% for all tested polymer types. Theeffects of purified and non-purified microplastic solutions were compared in cell studies, and the oxidativestress and inflammatory response in cells treated with purified solutions were reduced to levels similarto those observed without exposure to the bead solution.

ITO (Indium Tin Oxide) transparent electrode of after used LCD, contains indium oxides, which is classified as an expensive rare metal. Therefore, LCD recycling is becoming an important issue in terms of solving environmental problems and securing resources. Followed by dismantling of waste LCD, for hydrometallurgical indium recovery from LCD through solvent extraction is the rudimentary stage. The determination of optimum conditions is rather essential from efficient solvent extraction process development perspective. Hence, solvent extraction efficiency of indium as function of leachant(A)/extractant(O) ratio, extractant(O)/stripping reagent(A') ratio and reaction temperature were investigated. Through our investigation, A/O and O/A' ratio varies from 1 to 8, reaction temperature varies from 25℃(RT) to 80℃. As extractant and stripping reagent, D2EHPA and HCl were used, respectively.
