Association between environmental pollutants and the FSH/AMH ratio as a marker of ovarian reserve

The ovarian function decreases with age, and various markers, such as follicle stimulating hormone, inhibin B, antral follicle count, and anti-Müllerian hormone, are used for its evaluation. Recently, exposure to various environmental pollutants in daily life has been reported as an important cause of ovarian function decline. Therefore, the present study aimed to confirm the effect of environmental pollutants on the relationship between age and decline in ovarian function. The exposure levels of 16 environmental pollutants were evaluated in women aged 26-40 years, and the AMH levels and FSH/AMH ratios were used as markers for the decline of ovarian function. The participants were divided into two groups: low-level or high-level for each environmental pollutant if their exposure level was below or above the median respectively. The slope of the decrease or increase in the AMH level and FSH/AMH ratio of each group with age was evaluated. The FSH/AMH ratio better presented the difference in the rate of change with age in each group than did AMH alone. In particular, the rate of change in the FSH/AMH ratio increased 5.2 and 3.7 times (p<0.05) in the group exposed to high levels of the volatile organic compound metabolite, trans, trans-muconic acid and the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons metabolite, 2-hydroxynaphthalene, respectively, than in the low-level exposure groups for those metabolites. This study confirmed that environmental pollutants influenced the rate of change in the FSH/AMH ratio with age. Further studies on larger populations are necessary in the future.
Fatigue-Alleviating Effect on Mice of an Ethanolic Extract from <i>Rubus coreanus</i>

<P>The fatigue-alleviating effects on mice of <I>Rubus coreanus</I> were investigated by using an adjustable-current water pool. The mice were exhaustively exercised for 2 consecutive days, and those administered with the 80% ethanol extract (RCE) of <I>R. coreanus</I> displayed a lower reduction (20%) in swimming time on day 2 than the control group (41% reduction). RCE significantly prevented the depletion of hepatic antioxidants during exercise-induced fatigue. These results suggest that RCE alleviated fatigue by elevating the antioxidative potential.</P>
Stimulatory Effects of Ferulic Acid on Endurance Exercise Capacity in Mice

<P>Ferulic acid was orally administered to mice in order to investigate its effects on exercise endurance capacity. When a single administration of ferulic acid was given to the mice in an adjustable-current water pool, the duration of exhaustive swimming was longer than that exhibited by the mice in the control group. Also, when the mice were exhaustively exercised for 3 consecutive days, no change in swimming time was found in the ferulic acid-administered group on the final day, and a large decrease in the untreated mice. Administration of ferulic acid efficiently activated the hepatic antioxidative defense system during exercise. The mice that received ferulic acid showed significant increases in the activity of hepatic antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione-<I>S</I>-transferase. Furthermore, an increased glutathione level was observed, while the malondialdehyde content was reduced. These results suggest that ferulic acid possesses stimulatory effects that can enhance exercise endurance capacity and reduce fatigue by elevating antioxidative potentials.</P>

어성초 열수 추출물, 연잎 열수 추출물, 녹차씨 70% 에탄올 추출물의 혼합물인 MIX가 흰쥐에서 에탄올 투여에 따른 혈중 에탄올 및 아세트알데히드 농도와 에탄올 대사 효소들에 작용하는 효과와 직접적인 에탄올 대사 효소 활성에 미치는 영향을 확인하여 신규 숙취해소 소재로서 MIX의 활용 가능성을 연구하였다. 급성 에탄올을 투여한 EtOH군과 MIX-200군은 혈중 에탄올 농도가 에탄올을 투여하지 않은 NC군보다 높게 나타났고, MIX-200군은 EtOH군에 비교해 혈중 에탄올 농도가 에탄올 투여 3시간부터 감소하였고, 혈중 아세트알데히드의 농도는 에탄올 투여 1시간 이후부터 감소하였다. 에탄올과 아세트알데히드를 분해하는 효소인 ADH와 ALDH의 활성은 MIX-200군에서 EtOH군보다 높게 나타났다. 또한, MIX는 높은 alcohol dehydrogenase 및 acetaldehyde dehydrogenase 활성을 나타내었다. 따라서 MIX는 에탄올 대사 효소들의 활성 증가에 직·간접적으로 작용해 알코올 섭취 후 혈중 알코올 및 아세트알데히드를 감소시키는 숙취해소 작용을 갖는 신규 식품 소재로 사용될 수 있을 것으로 생각한다. This study was performed to investigate the ameliorating effect of a mixture of extracts from Houttuynia cordata Thunb, Nelumbo nucifera G. (leaf), and Camellia sinensis (seed) (MIX) on acute ethanol-induced hangover in Sprague-Dawley rats. Plasma ethanol and acetaldehyde levels in MIX-treated rats significantly decreased at 3 h and 5 h after acute ethanol administration (25%, 3 g/kg body weight/d) as compared to ethanol-treated rats. Hepatic alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and acetaldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) activities were significantly higher in MIXtreated rats than in ethanol-treated rats. MIX exhibited high ADH and ALDH activities on direct assays using S9 rat liver fraction for ethanol metabolic enzymes clearance action. These results suggest that MIX could alleviate ethanol-induced hangover symptoms by elevating activities related to hepatic ethanol-metabolizing enzymes against ethanol induced metabolites, and MIX should be further developed to be a new anti-hangover material.
특수학급 방과 후 프로그램을 중심으로 한 학교 놀이치료프로그램 사례 연구

본 연구는 서울 시 소재의 한 초등학교에서 실시한 방과 후 놀이치료 프로그램의 효과를 알아보았다. 특수학급 저학년 그룹에 속한 세 명의 아동이 총 12회기의 놀이치료 프로그램에 참여하였으며, 프로그램의 효과는 아동별 목표행동의 증가로 측정하였다. 연구결과, 놀이치료 회기에 따라 증가와 감소를 보이는 차이가 나타나기는 했으나 세 아동 모두의 목표행동이 증가한 것으로 나타났다. 앞으로의 연구에서는 다양한 아동의 특성을 체계적으로 평가하고 더욱 효과적인 학교 놀이치료 프로그램을 위하여 학교와 가정, 치료자 간의 협력과 학교 현장의 장점을 살린 놀이치료 환경 구성을 위한 노력이 필요한 것으로 보인다.
