Vol.31 No.2
This study examined the impact of sex and appearance discrimination on Korean adolescents’ suicidal ideation and subjective happiness. Gender-based regression analyses were conducted in cases of 2,345 middle school students using Yonsei Univ. Social Development Institute’s 2019 survey data. The findings were as follows: First, in the female group, perception of gender discrimination increased suicidal ideation by about 2.1 times and decreased subjective happiness, while in the male group, it didn’t affect suicidal ideation but reduced subjective happiness. Perception of gender discrimination had a more effect on the female group. On the while, perception of appearance discrimination significantly affects suicidal ideation in both groups. Specifically, perception of appearance discrimination increased suicidal ideation by about 2.0 times and 1.8 times, respectively, in the female and male groups. The overlapping discrimination based on sex and appearance increased suicidal ideation by about 3.0 times and lowered happiness only in the female group. Such findings show the risk of sex and appearance discrimination and emphasize the need for a gender-specific analysis.

Meso-dihydroguaiaretic acid (MDGA) is a medicinal herbal product isolated from the aerial parts of Saururus chinensis that inhibits the cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2)-dependent phase of prostaglandin D2 (PGD2) generation in bone marrow-derived mast cells (BMMC) (IC50 9.8 μM). However, this compound did not inhibit COX-2 protein expression in BMMC at concentrations up to 30 μM, indicating that MDGA directly inhibits COX-2 activity. In addition, this compound consistently inhibited the production of leukotriene C4 (IC50 1.3 μM). These results demonstrate that MDGA inhibits both COX-2 and 5-lipoxygenase. Furthermore, this compound strongly inhibited the degranulation reaction in BMMC (IC50 11.4 μM). Therefore, this compound might provide a basis for novel anti-inflammatory drug development.

Background: This study examined the relationship between alcohol consumption and total testosterone deficiency based on facial flushing among Korean men. Methods: A total of 314 men were included in this study and divided into non-drinkers (n=78) and drinkers (n=236). Drinkers were also divided into flushers (n=96) and non-flushers (n=140). Flushers and non-flushers were separated into two groups based on the amount of alcohol consumed: moderate drinkers (≤8 standard drinks per week) and heavy drinkers (>8 standard drinks per week). Total testosterone <3.5 ng/mL was defined as testosterone deficiency. Results: The risk of testosterone deficiency was significantly higher in heavy drinkers who flushed than in non-drinkers (odds ratio, 4.37; 95% confidence interval, 1.20–15.88; P=0.025). However, no significant difference was ob-served in the risk of testosterone deficiency in non-flushers, regardless of the amount of alcohol consumed. Conclusion: This study suggests that the risk of testosterone deficiency increases in heavy drinkers (>8 drinks per week) who flush compared to that in non-drinkers.
