In the Large Helical Device (LHD), some reactor-oriented experiments, i.e. high beta, high ion temperature, steady state operation, have produced remarkable progress in recent experimental campaigns. By optimizing the rotational transform, an average beta value of 4.3 %, which is the highest on record for helical devices, was achieved. The ICRF sustained steady-state discharges for more than 30 minutes, these were also successfully performed with the aid of the magnetic axis swing technique for the reduction of the heat load to the plasma-facing component. In the discharge, the total input energy to the plasma reached 1.3 GJ, which also established a new record.1

<P>A vibration isolation system called the Type-Bp system used for power recycling mirrors has been developed for KAGRA, the interferometric gravitational-wave observatory in Japan. A suspension of the Type-Bp system passively isolates an optic from seismic vibration using three main pendulum stages equipped with two vertical vibration isolation systems. A compact reaction mass around each of the main stages allows for achieving sufficient damping performance with a simple feedback as well as vibration isolation ratio. Three Type-Bp systems were installed in KAGRA, and were proved to satisfy the requirements on the damping performance, and also on estimated residual displacement of the optics.</P>
Contribution of a Non-classical HLA Gene, HLA-DOA, to the Risk of Rheumatoid Arthritis
Okada, Y.,Suzuki, A.,Ikari, K.,Terao, C.,Kochi, Y.,Ohmura, K.,Higasa, K.,Akiyama, M.,Ashikawa, K.,Kanai, M.,Hirata, J.,Suita, N.,Teo, Y.Y.,Xu, H.,Bae, S.C.,Takahashi, A.,Momozawa, Y.,Matsuda, K.,Momoh University of Chicago Press [etc.] 2016 American journal of human genetics Vol.99 No.2
<P>Despite the progress in human leukocyte antigen (HLA) causal variant mapping, independent localization of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) risk from classical HLA genes is challenging. Here, we conducted a large-scale MHC fine-mapping analysis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in a Japanese population (6,244 RA cases and 23,731 controls) population by using HLA imputation, followed by a multi-ethnic validation study including east Asian and European populations (n=7,097 and 23,149, respectively). Our study identified an independent risk of a synonymous mutation at HLA-DOA, a non-classical HLA gene, on anti-citrullinated protein autoantibody (ACPA)-positive RA risk (p=1.4 x 10(-) 9), which demonstrated a cis-expression quantitative trait loci (cis-eQTL) effect on HLA-DOA expression. Trans-ethnic comparison revealed different linkage disequilibrium (LD) patterns in HLA-DOA and HLA-DRB1, explaining the observed HLA-DOA variant risk heterogeneity among ethnicities, which was most evident in the Japanese population. Although previous HLA fine-mapping studies have identified amino acid polymorphisms of the classical HLA genes as driving genetic susceptibility to disease, our study additionally identifies the dosage contribution of a non-classical HLA gene to disease etiology. Our study contributes to the understanding of HLA immunology in human diseases and suggests the value of incorporating additional ancestry in MHC fine-mapping.</P>
Overlap coincidence to strong coincidence in substitution tiling dynamics
Akiyama, S.,Lee, J.Y. Academic Press 2014 European journal of combinatorics : Journal europ& Vol.39 No.-
Overlap coincidence is an equivalent criterion to pure discrete spectrum of the dynamics of self-affine tilings in Rd. In the case of d=1, strong coincidence on m-letter irreducible substitution has been introduced in Dekking (1978) and Arnoux and Ito (2001) which implies that the system is metrically conjugate to a domain exchange in Rm-1. However being a domain exchange does not imply the property of pure discrete spectrum of the tiling dynamics. The relation between two coincidences has not been established completely. In this paper we generalize strong coincidence to higher dimensions and show the implication from overlap coincidence to the new strong coincidence when the associated height group is trivial. Furthermore we introduce a new criterion 'simultaneous coincidence' and show the implication from overlap coincidence to the simultaneous coincidence. The triviality of the height group is shown in Barge and Kwapisz (2006) and Sing (2006) for 1-dimension irreducible Pisot substitutions.
Algorithm for determining pure pointedness of self-affine tilings
Akiyama, S.,Lee, J.Y. Academic Press ; Elsevier Science B.V. Amsterdam 2011 Advances in mathematics Vol.226 No.4
Overlap coincidence in a self-affine tiling in Rd is equivalent to pure point dynamical spectrum of the tiling dynamical system. We interpret the overlap coincidence in the setting of substitution Delone set in Rd and find an efficient algorithm to check the pure point dynamical spectrum. This algorithm is easy to implement into a computer program. We give the program and apply it to several examples. In the course of the proof of the algorithm, we show a variant of the conjecture of Urbanski (Solomyak (2006) [40]) on the Hausdorff dimension of the boundaries of fractal tiles.
