Experimental Study of the Runaway Current in the J-TEXT Tokamak

        Y. H. Luo,Z. Y. Chen,X. Q. Zhang,D. W. Huang,W. Jin,Y. H. Huang,Y. Tang,J. C. Li,R. H. Tong,W. Yan,G. Zhuang 한국물리학회 2014 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.64 No.3

Major plasma disruptions in tokamaks often generate runaway currents, which contain electronswith energies of several tens of megaelectron-volts (MeV). These currents can cause substantialdamage when control is lost and the current hits the limiters or the vessel wall. The interactionbetween the runaway electrons and the impurities inside the plasma results in soft X-ray emission, which can provide detailed information about the runaway generation process and the confinementof runaway electrons. A vertical soft X-ray array at the top of Joint Texas Experimental Tokamak(J-TEXT) was used to study the runaway beams resulting from major disruptions. Runawayelectron production and confinement of runaway current were observed by using soft X-ray images.

Environmentally friendly and non-polluting solvent pretreatment of palm samples for polyphenol analysis using choline chloride deep eutectic solvents

        Fu, N.,Lv, R.,Guo, Z.,Guo, Y.,You, X.,Tang, B.,Han, D.,Yan, H.,Row, K.H. Elsevier 2017 Journal of chromatography Vol.1492 No.-

<P>In this work, choline chloride (ChCI) deep eutectic solvents (DESs) were evaluated for the pretreatment of palm samples in the analysis of polyphenols, such as protocatechuic acid, catechins, epicatechin, and caffeic acid. During the enrichment step of the pretreatment, eight DESs comprising ChCI with ethylene glycol (EG), glycerol (Gly), xylitol (Xyl), phenol (Ph), formic acid (FA), citric acid (CiA), oxalic acid (OA), or malonic acid (MA), were prepared and applied to the reflux extraction of polyphenols from palm samples. All the DESs exhibited higher polyphenol extraction efficiency than methanol, and the highest extraction efficiency was obtained using ChCI-FA (1:1, mole ratio). For the purification step of the pretreatment, eight ChCI DES-modified adsorbents were prepared by hydrothermal polymerization and packed into solid phase extraction (SPE) cartridges, and ChCI-Urea, ChCI-Gly, ChCI-FA, and water, were used as eluents. The ChCI DES-modified adsorbents were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface analysis, and the polyphenols were analyzed by mass spectrometry and high-performance liquid chromatographultraviolet detection. The highest purification efficiency was obtained using the ChCI-Ph DES-modified adsorbent as the SPE packing material and ChCI-Urea-H2O (1:1:5, mole ratio), ChCI-Gly (1:1, mole ratio), ChCI-FA-H2O (1:1:5, mole ratio), and H2O as the eluents. Compared to conventional purification processes that employ commercial C-18 or C-8 SPE columns with organic solvents as eluents, the ChCI DES-based SPE purification process successfully avoided the use of expensive commercial SPE columns and organic solvents. Furthermore, it isolated a larger amount of the target compounds under the same experimental conditions, and could be applied over five cycles with good reversibility. This work indicates that DESs as green solvents have great potential for the totally green pretreatment of samples during the enrichment and purification processes. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. Polymorphism of Ghrelin Gene in Twelve Chinese Indigenous Chicken Breeds and Its Relationship with Chicken Growth Traits

        C. C. Li,K. Li,J. Li,D. L. Mo,R. F. Xu,G. H. Chen,Y. Z. Qiangba,S. L. Ji,X. H. Tang,B. Fan,M. J. Zhu,T. A. Xiong,X. Guan,B. Liu 아세아·태평양축산학회 2006 Animal Bioscience Vol.19 No.2

A 2,656 bp fragment of chicken ghrelin gene was cloned and SNPs were detected by PCR-RFLP and Allele Specific PCR (ASP) in 12 Chinese indigenous chicken breeds and a commercial chicken population. The results showed that there were 23 base variations and an amino acid change (Gln->Arg) in cloned chicken ghrelin gene. Three SNPs were confirmed in 13 populations and associations between this gene and growth traits of Tibetan chicken (TC) and Recessive White chicken (RW) were investigated. The results of haplotype analysis revealed that 26 haplotype genotypes were composed of eight haplotypes. The results of x2 tests indicated that there were significant differences between genotypes or haplotype genotype frequencies in some of the breeds or sexes at 0.05 or 0.01 levels. The results of ANOVA revealed that there were significant differences between genotypes or haplotype genotypes on some growth traits of TC and RW chicken breeds at 0.05 or 0.01 levels. Multiple comparisons showed that there were significant associations between genotype CT at site 71 and some growth traits of two chicken breeds and between genotype AG at site 1,215 and body weight at 16 wk of two chicken breeds, and there was a significant association between haplotype genotype CAA/CAG and body weight and shank girth at 16 wk of two chicken breeds.

Nanosized Carbon Black Combined with Ni2O3 as “Universal” Catalysts for Synergistically Catalyzing Carbonization of Polyolefin Wastes to Synthesize Carbon Nanotubes and Application for Supercapacitors

        Wen, Xin,Chen, Xuecheng,Tian, Nana,Gong, Jiang,Liu, Jie,Ru&#x308,mmeli, Mark H.,Chu, Paul K.,Mijiwska, Ewa,Tang, Tao American Chemical Society 2014 Environmental science & technology Vol.48 No.7

<P>The catalytic carbonization of polyolefin materials to synthesize carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is a promising strategy for the processing and recycling of plastic wastes, but this approach is generally limited due to the selectivity of catalysts and the difficulties in separating the polyolefin mixture. In this study, the influence of nanosized carbon black (CB) and Ni2O3 as a novel combined catalyst system on catalyzing carbonization of polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), polystyrene (PS) and their blends was investigated. We showed that this combination was efficient to promote the carbonization of these polymers to produce CNTs with high yields and of good quality. Catalytic pyrolysis and model carbonization experiments indicated that the carbonization mechanism was attributed to the synergistic effect of the combined catalysts rendered by CB and Ni2O3: CB catalyzed the degradation of PP, PE, and PS to selectively produce more aromatic compounds, which were subsequently dehydrogenated and reassembled into CNTs via the catalytic action of CB together with Ni particles. Moreover, the performance of the synthesized CNTs as the electrode of supercapacitor was investigated. The supercapacitor displayed a high specific capacitance as compared to supercapacitors using commercial CNTs and CB. This difference was attributed to the relatively larger specific surface areas of our synthetic CNTs and their more oxygen-containing groups.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/esthag/2014/esthag.2014.48.issue-7/es404646e/production/images/medium/es-2013-04646e_0008.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/es404646e'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>

Effects of Replacement of Soybean Meal by Fermented Cottonseed Meal on Growth Performance, Serum Biochemical Parameters and Immune Function of Yellow-feathered Broilers

        Tang, J.W.,Sun, H.,Yao, X.H.,Wu, Y.F.,Wang, X.,Feng, J. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2012 Animal Bioscience Vol.25 No.3

The study was conducted to examine the effects of partially replacing soybean meal (SBM) by solid-state fermented cottonseed meal (FCSM) on growth performance, serum biochemical parameters and immune function of broilers. After inoculated with Bacillus subtilis BJ-1 for 48 h, the content of free gossypol in cottonseed meal was decreased from 0.82 to 0.21 g/kg. A total of 600, day-old male yellow-feathered broilers were randomly divided into four groups with three replicates of 50 chicks each. A corn-SBM based control diet was formulated and the experimental diets included 4, 8 or 12% FCSM, replacing SBM. Throughout the experiment, broilers fed 8% FCSM had higher (p<0.05) body weight gain than those fed 0, 4 and 12% FCSM. The feed intake in 8% FCSM group was superior (p<0.05) to other treatments from d 21 to 42. On d 21, the concentration of serum immunoglobin M in the 4% and 8% FCSM groups, as well as the content of complements (C3, C4) in 8% FCSM group were greater (p<0.05) than those in the SBM group. Besides, birds fed 8% FCSM had increased (p<0.05) serum immunoglobin M, immunoglobulin G and complement C4 levels on d 42 compared with bird fed control diet. No differences (p>0.05) were found between treatments regarding the serum biochemical parameters and the relative weights of immune organs. In conclusion, FCSM can be used in broiler diets at up to 12% of the total diet and an appropriate replacement of SBM with FCSM may improve growth performance and immunity in broilers.

Effects of Sown Season and Maturity Stage on In vitro Fermentation and In sacco Degradation Characteristics of New Variety Maize Stover

        Tang, S.X.,Li, F.W.,Gan, J.,Wang, M.,Zhou, C.S.,Sun, Z.H.,Han, X.F.,Tan, Z.L. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2011 Animal Bioscience Vol.24 No.6

The effects of seedtime and maturity stage on nutritive value of five maize stover varieties, including conventional maize (Kexiangyu 11, CM), fodder maize (Huqing 1, FM), high oil maize (Gaoyou 115, HOM), sweet maize (Kexiangtianyu 1, SM) and waxy maize (Kexiangluoyu 1, WM), were examined based on chemical composition, in vitro gas production and in situ incubation techniques. Maize stover was sampled at d 17 and d 30 after tasseling, and designated as maturity stage 1 and stage 2, respectively. The average dry matter (DM) organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP) and fiber contents were the greatest for HOM, SM and FM, respectively. CM had the highest in vitro organic matter disappearance (IVOMD) and volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentration. The highest ammonia nitrogen ($NH_3$-N) concentration in the incubation solution, and effective degradability of DM ($ED_{DM}$) and neutral detergent fiber ($ED_{NDF}$) were observed in SM. Advanced maturity stage increased (p<0.05) DM content, $ED_{DM}$ and $ED_{NDF}$, but decreased (p<0.05) OM and CP contents, and decreased (p<0.05) b and a+b values, IVOMD and molar proportion of valerate in the incubation solution for maize stover. Maize sown in summer had greater (p<0.05) OM content, but lower DM, CP, neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF) content compared with maize sown in spring. Maize sown in summer had greater (p<0.001) IVOMD, $NH_3$-N concentration in the incubation solution and $ED_{NDF}$, but lower (p<0.01) ratio of acetate to propionate compared to maize sown in spring. The interaction effect of variety${\times}$seedtime was observed running through almost all chemical composition, in vitro gas production parameters and in situ DM and NDF degradability. The overall results suggested that SM had the highest nutrient quality, and also indicated the possibility of selecting maize variety and seedtime for the utilization of maize stover in ruminants.

        X. C. Ruan,G. C. Chen,H. X. Huang,X. Li,Y. B. Nie,B. Zhou,Z. Y. Ma,J. Bao,Q. P. Zhong,Z. Y. Zhou,H. Q. Tang,J. S. Zhang,C. L. Lan,Y. L. Zhang,Y. M. Li 한국물리학회 2011 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.59 No.23

More and more interests have been paid to the differential and double-differential neutron emission cross sections (DX and DDX) at above 20 MeV region in recent years. At the China Institute of Atomic Energy (CIAE), a program to measure the DX and DDX between 20 and 30 MeV neutron energy region has been carried out. The d-T reaction neutron source was used to produce the 20 - 30 MeV neutrons with a tritium gas target at the HI-13 tandem accelerator at CIAE. The time-of-flight(TOF) technique was used to measure the neutron energy from about 1 MeV to 30 MeV with 3 BC501A liquid scintillators (with a size of Φ180 ×100 mm). A preliminary measurement has been carried out for ^9Be at 22 MeV. The measured data were analyzed by detailed Monte-Carlo simulation to perform the multiple scattering, flux attenuation and finite geometry corrections. The experimental details, the data analysis, the progress, the results and the future plan will be presented in this report.

Very small “window of opportunity” for generating CO oxidation-active Au<i>n</i> on TiO2

        Tang, X.,Schneider, J.,Dollinger, A.,Luo, Y.,,rz, A. S.,Judai, K.,Abbet, S.,Kim, Y. D.,Gantefö,r, G. F.,Fairbrother, D. H.,Heiz, U.,Bowen, K. H.,Proch, S. The Royal Society of Chemistry 2014 Physical chemistry chemical physics Vol.16 No.14

<P>Recent research in heterogeneous catalysis, especially on size-selected model systems under UHV conditions and also in realistic catalytic environments, has proved that it is necessary to think in terms of the exact number of atoms when it comes to catalyst design. This is of utmost importance if the amount of noble metal, gold in particular, is to be reduced for practical reactions like CO oxidation. Here it is shown that on TiO2 only Au6 and Au7 clusters are active for CO oxidation which holds for the single crystal, thin films, and titania clusters deposited on HOPG. Size-selected cluster deposition and TPD methods have been employed to investigate the CO oxidation activity of Au<I>n</I>/TiO2 systems which are compared to recent results reported by Lee <I>et al.</I> to form a consistent picture in which only two species can be regarded as “active”. The efficiency of investigated Au<I>n</I>/(TiO2)93/HOPG composite materials is attributed to carbon-assisted oxygen spillover from gold to support particles and across grain boundaries.</P> <P>Graphic Abstract</P><P>The probability of creating CO oxidation-active species on TiO2 is very small since only Au6 and Au7 are catalytically active. <IMG SRC='http://pubs.rsc.org/services/images/RSCpubs.ePlatform.Service.FreeContent.ImageService.svc/ImageService/image/GA?id=c4cp00160e'> </P>

Use of In vitro Gas Production Technique to Investigate Interactions between Rice Straw, Wheat Straw, Maize Stover and Alfalfa or Clover

        Tang, S.X.,Tayo, G.O.,Tan, Z.L.,Sun, Z.H.,Wang, M.,Ren, G.P.,Han, X.F. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2008 Animal Bioscience Vol.21 No.9

Measurement of gas produced during in vitro fermentation was used to investigate the fermentation characteristics and interactions of rice straw, wheat straw or maize stover mixed with alfalfa or clover at proportions of 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75 and 0:100, respectively. Cumulative gas production was recorded at 2, 4, 8, 12, 16, 24 and 48 h of incubation, and the Gompertz function was used to describe the kinetics of gas production. In vitro dry matter and organic matter disappearances (IVDMD and IVOMD) were determined after 48 h incubation. The rate of gas production of clover was higher (p<0.05) than that of rice straw, wheat straw, maize stover and alfalfa when straws and hays were incubated separately. Increasing the proportion of alfalfa in the straw-alfalfa mixtures increased (p<0.05) the rates, but not the maximum volume of gas production. However, both rate and the maximum volume of gas production were increased (p<0.01) as the proportions of clover increased in the straw-clover mixtures. The cumulative gas production at 48 h, IVDMD and IVOMD showed no consistent interaction effects between different mixtures of cereal straws and hays. The extent of interactive effects was affected by the types of cereal straw, legume hay and their proportions in the mixture. The appropriate combination for the mixture of rice straw or maize stover with leguminous hays was 75:25 and 25:75, respectively. The better combination occurred at a proportion of 50:50 for the mixture of wheat straw and alfalfa. We conclude that the suitable proportion of low-quality straw and high quality legume hay combination should be considered in the ration formulation system of ruminants according to the extent of positive interactive effects.
