The shape memory effect is resulted from the reverse motion of Shockley partial dislocations which change εmartensite back to austenite. In Fe-Mn-Si alloys, the shape memory effect is obtained by the reverse transformation of stress-induced E martensite during heating. The reversibility of the motion of partial dislocations will not lead to a complete recovery. There are many factors influencing the shape memory effect like as alloy composition, Neel temperature, transformation temperature, applied stress and strain, annealing and quenching temperature, deformation and recovery annealing temperature etc. In this paper, shape memory effect by training treatment(cold working- annealing) and deformation temperature between -20℃ and 200℃ with amount of strain was improved in Fe-l5Mn-5Cr-10Co-3Si alloys Training treatment suppresses slip deformation and lower the stress for induced εmartensite transformation through introducing the stacking faults which can act as nucleation embryo for εmartensite.

This study investigated the effect of the tempering before aging on the precipitation of Laves phase and mechanical properties of 10Cr-6W and 10Cr-6W-3Co ferritic heat-resistant steels. Laves phase was precipitated by aging, which increase tensile strength but decreased elongation and impact value. Toughness was rapidly decreased by the presence of the very fine disk-like Laves phase precipitated at early aging stage. Strength and impact value were decreased by tempering treatment and that is due to the increase of the particle number per unite area and to larger particle size of Laves phase. Laves phase increased by adding Co, and consequently strength was increased and elongation and toughness were decreased. (Received February 26, 2004)

NK/T cell lymphoma is a rare type of non-Hodgkin"s lymphomas. It has the histological features of angiocentric lymphoma characterized by prominent angio-invasion by tumor cells, and commonly presents in nasal and paranasal structures. Non-nasal form of NK/T cell lymphoma involves skin, gastrointestinal tract, or liver. With conventional chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy, NK/T cell lymphoma shows poor response rate and seldom results in long term survival. Especially, non-nasal form has more aggressive clinical manifestations and grave outcome than nasal form. We report a case of NK/T cell lymphoma presenting with small bowel perforation and malignant pleural effusion due to lymphoma infiltration, transplanted with allogeneic peripheral blood stem cells from HLA identical sibling donor after fludarabine-based nonmyeloablative chemotherapy. After transplantation, the patient achieved an enduring tri-lineage hematological complete response without any evidence of relapse for 10 months.

N/A Peptides that are common to the brain and gut are thought to play intermediary roles as neurotransmitters or neuromodulators in the regulation of gut function. Calcitonin is a polypeptide hormone of 32 amino acid residues. Recently, much evidence has been accumulated to suggest that calcitonin may inhibit gastric acid secretion by a central action, but the neurohumoral pathways mediating the antisecretory effects of calcitonin in rats are not well elucidated. In the present study, using a gastric perfusion technique, the effects of ICV administration of calcitonin on gastric acid secretion stimulated by baclofen were investigated in rats. We also investigated whether the serotonergic system is involved in calcitonin's effect of gastric acid secretion. The results obtained were as follows: 1) ICV administration of baclofen stimulated gastric acid secretion in a dose-dependent manner. Central administration of baclofen was approximately 200-400 times more sensitive than subcutaneous administration. 2) Baclofen-induced gastric acid secretion was partially suppressed by bilateral vagotomy. 3) Gastric acid secretion stimulated by baclofen was markedly suppressed by ICV administration of calcitonin. 4) Depletion of brain serotonin with the neurotoxin 5, 7-dihydroxytryptamine did not influence calcitonin-induced gestric acid suppression. In this study it was demonstrated that centrally- administered calcitonin suppresses baclofen-induced gastric acid secretion. Also. it is suggested that the serotonergic system is not involved in calcitonin-induced gastric acid suppression.

Background : Water uptake and flow across cellular membranes is a fundamental requirement for plant growth and development, and plant water status is important not only for plant growth under favorable conditions but also for ability of a plant to tolerate adverse environmental conditions. Thus identification of plasma membrane water channel genes (aquaporins) in ginseng provides extensive information for functional studies and the development of markers for salinity stress tolerance. Methods and Results : For salinity treatment, the plants were grown for 4 weeks in culture medium gelled with 0.8% Phytoagar, and the old media were replaced with the fresh medium containing NaCl at 0, 50, 100, 200 and 400 mM, respectively. The samples for stress treated and non-stressed plants were collected from 6h to 72h, and frozen immediately into liquid nitrogen. According to the sequence information from the assembled transcripts, four primer pairs were designed from the aquaporin gene regions. In order to determine the pattern of aquaporins expression in ginseng seedlings to salinity stress, we conducted semi-quantitative RT-PCR. Conclusion : A tonoplast intrinsic protein 1 (TIP1)-type aquaporin is not only believed to be essential for plant life, but also to be beneficial for growth under salinity stress. Therefore, a deeper understanding of aquaporin genes in ginseng will be essential for crop improvement, which could help us to understand the molecular genetic basis for the ginseng genetic improvement and also provide the functional genetic resources for selective breeding and transgenic research.
