Effect of soil-structure interaction on the reliability of hyperbolic cooling towers

A semi-stochastic process model of reliability was established for hyperbolic cooling towers subjected to combined loadings of wind force, self-weight, temperature loading. Effect of the soil-structure interaction on reliability was evaluated. By involving the gust factor, an equivalent static scheme was employed to convert the dynamic model to static model. The TR combination rule was used to consider relations between load responses. An analysis example was made on the 90M cooling tower of Maoming, Guangdong of China. Numerical results show that the design not including interaction turns to be conservative.

Objective: Prospective studies on postoperative residual breast tissue (RBT) after robotic-assisted nipple-sparing mastectomy (R-NSM) for breast cancer are limited. RBT presents an unknown risk of local recurrence or the development of new cancer after curative or risk-reducing mastectomies. This study investigated the technical feasibility of using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to evaluate RBT after R-NSM in women with breast cancer. Materials and Methods: In this prospective pilot study, 105 patients, who underwent R-NSM for breast cancer at Changhua Christian Hospital between March 2017 and May 2022, were subjected to postoperative breast MRI to evaluate the presence and location of RBT. The postoperative MRI scans of 43 patients (age, 47.8 ± 8.5 years), with existing preoperative MRI scans, were evaluated for the presence and location of RBT. In total, 54 R-NSM procedures were performed. In parallel, we reviewed the literature on RBT after nipple-sparing mastectomy, considering its prevalence. Results: RBT was detected in 7 (13.0%) of the 54 mastectomies (6 of the 48 therapeutic mastectomies and 1 of the 6 prophylactic mastectomies). The most common location for RBT was behind the nipple-areolar complex (5 of 7 [71.4%]). Another RBT was found in the upper inner quadrant (2 of 7 [28.6%]). Among the six patients who underwent RBT after therapeutic mastectomies, one patient developed a local recurrence of the skin flap. The other five patients with RBT after therapeutic mastectomies remained disease-free. Conclusion: R-NSM, a surgical innovation, does not seem to increase the prevalence of RBT, and breast MRI showed feasibility as a noninvasive imaging tool for evaluating the presence and location of RBT.

Infection by Sclerotium rolfsii will cause serious disease and lead to significant economic losses in chili pepper. In this study, the response of pepper during S. rolfsii infection was explored by electron microscopy, physiological determination and integrated proteome and metabolome analyses. Our results showed that the stomata of pepper stems were important portals for S. rolfsii infection. The plant cell morphology was significantly changed at the time of the fungal hyphae just contacting (T1) or surrounding (T2) the pepper. The chlorophyll, carotenoid, and MDA contents and the activities of POD, SOD, and CAT were markedly upregulated at T1 and T2. Approximately 4129 proteins and 823 metabolites were clearly identified in proteome and metabolome analyses, respectively. A change in 396 proteins and 54 metabolites in pepper stem tissues was observed at T1 compared with 438 proteins and 53 metabolites at T2. The proteins and metabolites related to photosynthesis and antioxidant systems in chloroplasts and mitochondria were disproportionally affected by S. rolfsii infection, impacting carbohydrate and amino acid metabolism. This study provided new insights into the response mechanism in pepper stems during S. rolfsii infection, which can guide future work on fungal disease resistance breeding in pepper.
Evaluation of Two Lagrangian Dual Optimization Algorithms for Large-Scale Unit Commitment Problems

Lagrangian relaxation is the most widely adopted method for solving unit commitment (UC) problems. It consists of two steps: dual optimization and primal feasible solution construction. The dual optimization step is crucial in determining the overall performance of the solution. This paper intends to evaluate two dual optimization methods - one based on subgradient (SG) and the other based on the cutting plane. Large-scale UC problems with hundreds of thousands of variables and constraints have been generated for evaluation purposes. It is found that the evaluated SG method yields very promising results.
Forensic biogeographical ancestry inference: recent insights and current trends

Background As a powerful complement to the paradigmatic DNA profiling strategy, biogeographical ancestry inference (BGAI) plays a significant part in human forensic investigation especially when a database hit or eyewitness testimony are not available. It indicates one’s biogeographical profile based on known population-specific genetic variations, and thus is crucial for guiding authority investigations to find unknown individuals. Forensic biogeographical ancestry testing exploits much of the recent advances in the understanding of human genomic variation and improving of molecular biology. Objective In this review, recent development of prospective ancestry informative markers (AIMs) and the statistical approaches of inferring biogeographic ancestry from AIMs are elucidated and discussed. Methods We highlight the research progress of three potential AIMs (i.e., single nucleotide polymorphisms, microhaplotypes, and Y or mtDNA uniparental markers) and discuss the prospects and challenges of two methods that are commonly used in BGAI. Conclusion While BGAI for forensic purposes has been thriving in recent years, important challenges, such as ethics and responsibilities, data completeness, and ununified standards for evaluation, remain for the use of biogeographical ancestry information in human forensic investigations. To address these issues and fully realize the value of BGAI in forensic investigation, efforts should be made not only by labs/institutions around the world independently, but also by inter-lab/institution collaborations.
Mechanical behavior and chloride resistance of cementitious composites with PE and steel fiber

The mechanical behaviors and chloride resistance performance of fiber reinforced cementitious composites (FRCC) with hybrid polyethylene (PE) and steel fiber (in total 2% by volume) were investigated. Based on micro-mechanics and fracture mechanics, the reason why the tensile strain capacity of FRCC changed obviously was obtained. Besides, the effects of the total surface area of fiber in FRCC on compressive strength and chloride content were clarified. It is found that the improvement of the tensile strain capacity of FRCC with hybrid fiber is attributed to the growth of strain-hardening performance index (the ratio of complementary energy to crack tip toughness). As the total surface area of fiber related with the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) between fiber and matrix increases, compressive strength decreases obviously. Since the total surface area of fiber is small, the chloride resistance performance of FRCC with hybrid PE and steel fiber is better than that of FRCC containing only PE fiber.
Enhanced Thermal and Mechanical Properties of Polyimide/Graphene Composites

Polyimide (PI)/graphene sheets (GSs) composites were prepared by solution blending. The incorporationof GSs into PI increased the thermal conductivity, thermal stability and mechanical properties of PI. The thermal conductivityof PI/GSs composites was significantly improved compared with that of neat PI from 0.254 to 1.002 W/mK; this can be attributed to the homogeneous dispersion of graphene and the formation of heat conduction pathway. Furthermore, the Young modulus of PI/GSs was raised up to 4.04 GPa, approximately two-fold enhancement incomparison with that of neat PI. In addition, the incorportation of GSs in PI indicated excellent optical transparencyat the lowest weight fractions of GSs and modified wettability of PI films.

In this study, two soybean genotypes, i.e., aluminum-tolerant Baxi 10 (BX10) and aluminumsensitive Bendi 2 (BD2), were used as plant materials and acidic red soil was used as growth medium. The soil layers from the inside to the outside of the root are: rhizospheric soil after washing (WRH), rhizospheric soil after brushing (BRH) and rhizospheric soil at two sides (SRH), respectively. The rhizosphere bacterial communities were analyzed by high-throughput sequencing of V4 hypervariable regions of 16S rRNA gene amplicons via Illumina MiSeq. The results of alpha diversity analysis showed that the BRH and SRH of BX10 were significantly lower in community richness than that of BD2, while the WRH exhibited no significant difference between BX10 and BD2. Among the three sampling compartments of the same soybean genotype, WRH had the lowest community richness and diversity while showing the highest coverage. Beta diversity analysis results displayed no significant difference for any compartment between the two genotypes, or among the three different sampling compartments for any same soybean genotype. However, the relative abundance of major bacterial taxa, specifically nitrogen-fixing and/or aluminum-tolerant bacteria, was significantly different in the compartments of the BRH and/or SRH at phylum and genus levels, indicating genotype-dependent variations in rhizosphere bacterial communities. Strikingly, as compared with BRH and SRH, the WRH within the same genotype (BX10 or BD2) always had an enrichment effect on rhizosphere bacteria associated with nitrogen fixation
