        The changing face of Chinese military generals: evolving promotion practices between 1981 and 2009

        It is difficult to overstate the importance of the human factor in any institution. The motivation of this study is to discern patterns, by examining and analyzing the biographical information of those who had been promoted to People`s Liberation Army (PLA) full generals (shangjiang), for a better insight into how Chinese military leadership has remade the PLA. A close examination of biographical information of PLA generals promoted during the past three decades indicates a number of intriguing patterns and trends, suggesting that Jiang Zemin and Hu Jintao during their tenures as chairmen of the Central Military Commission (the highest command authority in China`s armed forces) have furthered the modernization of China`s military by incorporating elements of diversity, stability and professionalization into the promotion practice of PLA generals.

        The impact of major league baseball on the incidence of operative hand and facial trauma at a level 1 trauma center

        Background Professional affiliation between medical centers and professional sports teams can be mutually beneficial in the provision of healthcare and marketing strategy. Anecdotal evidence suggests a link between trauma volume and sporting events; however, there is limited data. This study aims to characterize the incidence of operative hand and facial trauma during professional baseball home games. Methods A retrospective review of surgical cases for traumatic hand or facial injuries at a level 1 center between 1999 and 2012 was performed. Demographic information including date of injury, admission status, and operative repair were collected. Patients were grouped based on whether their trauma occurred on the date of a home game. Results Operative hand and facial trauma occurred at a rate of 33.4 injuries per 100 days with home games, compared to 22.2 injuries per 100 days (incidence rate ratios, 1.50; 95% confidence interval, 1.34–1.69). When home games were played, patients were more likely to present as a result of motorcycle accidents (3.1% vs. 1.5%; P=0.04) or bicycle accidents (5.0% vs. 2.6%; P=0.01). Other mechanisms of trauma were not statistically different. There was an increase incidence of injuries during home games in August; weekly variability showed an increased incidence during the weekends. Conclusions There was an increased rate of operative hand and facial injuries on dates with professional home games. The incidence of injuries during home games was higher in the late summer and on the weekends. Further analysis may allow improved resource allocation and strategies for injury prevention and treatment.

        Pull factors influencing enrollment of Mainland Chinese students in Taiwanese universities: An empirical analysis

        A rapidly declining birthrate in Taiwan has placed pressure on universities to bolster waning enrollment. At the same time, Mainland China is becoming an enormous exporter of international students, and the close geographic proximity between Taiwan and China has resulted in many Chinese students enrolling in Taiwanese institutions. Between 2012 and 2013, over 75% of Chinese exchange students studied in the United States, Great Britain, Australia, or Canada. In contrast, Taiwan was unable to attract a meaningful number of these students. Thus, the issue of whether institutions in Taiwan appeal to Mainland Chinese students is worthy of exploration. This study recruited 228 Chinese students that studied at universities in 2012 in order to identify factors that influenced the enrollment of students from Mainland China in Taiwan. Survey results led us to four important findings as follows: 1) sociocultural and school-related factors had the biggest influence on the decision to study in Taiwan; 2) college selection did not influence pull factors, learning satisfaction, or the intention to pursue further education; 3) school-related and personal factors influenced learning satisfaction as well as the intention to pursue further education; and 4) learning satisfaction has a direct and mediating influence on the intention to pursue further education. These findings yield recommendations that can serve as a reference for Taiwanese universities.

        Tube Voltage, DNA Double-Strand Breaks, and Image Quality in Coronary CT Angiography

        Objective: To evaluate the effects of tube voltage on image quality in coronary CT angiography (CCTA), the estimated radiation dose, and DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) in peripheral blood lymphocytes to optimize the use of CCTA in the era of low radiation doses. Materials and Methods: This study included 240 patients who were divided into 2 groups according to the DNA DSB analysis methods, i.e., immunofluorescence microscopy and flow cytometry. Each group was subdivided into 4 subgroups: those receiving CCTA only with different tube voltages of 120, 100, 80, or 70 kVp. Objective and subjective image quality was evaluated by analysis of variance. Radiation dosages were also recorded and compared. Results: There was no significant difference in demographic characteristics between the 2 groups and 4 subgroups in each group (all p > 0.05). As tube voltage decreased, both image quality and radiation dose decreased gradually and significantly. After CCTA, γ-H2AX foci and mean fluorescence intensity in the 120-, 100-, 80-, and 70-kVp groups increased by 0.14, 0.09, 0.07, and 0.06 foci per cell and 21.26, 9.13, 8.10, and 7.13 (all p < 0.05), respectively. The increase in the DNA DSB level in the 120-kVp group was higher than those in the other 3 groups (all p < 0.05), while there was no significant difference in the DSBs levels among these latter groups (all p > 0.05). Conclusion: The 100-kVp tube voltage may be optimal for CCTA when weighing DNA DSBs against the estimated radiation dose and image quality, with further reductions in tube voltage being unnecessary for CCTA.

        Predicting the rheological properties of waste vegetable oil biodiesel-modified water-based mud using artificial neural network

        Oil-based drilling muds have the greatest preference for drilling operations. However, utilization of environmentally friendly components in drilling mud is fast becoming a requirement prompting production of different types of drilling mud. While there is abundance of prediction models for the rheological properties of oil-based drilling mud, there is scarcity of the same for drilling mud with environmentally friendly additives. In this work, an artificial neural network (ANN) and a multiple nonlinear regression (MNLR) model were developed aimed at predicting the apparent viscosity, plastic viscosity and yield point of waste vegetable oil biodiesel-modified water-based mud. The mean squared errors and correlation coefficient were the key parameters to evaluate and compare the performance of both models. The results indicate that prediction of the ANN perfectly matched the experimental values better than those of MNLR, reflecting its superior performance.

      • Evaluating NFV-enabled Network Slicing for 5G Core

        Network slicing enables a single physical network be sliced into multiple virtual networks. Each is customized and optimized according to specific 5G services and business goals. It can accommodate QoS heterogeneity of different 5G vertical services with isolation. In this research, we realize 5G mobile core network slicing based on the NFV (Network Functions Virtualisation) MANO (MANagement and Orchestration) architecture. Our prototype leverages open sources from both OpenStack Tacker and NCTU free5GC to creates 5G core network slicing based on its Network Service Descriptor (NSD). We evaluate and compare the performance between the multiple network slicing system and the one-slice-fits-all single slicing system using three eMBB (enhanced Mobile BroadBand) services of different QoS levels. Our test results show that the former can achieve better throughput and response time than the latter with the tradeoff of increasing its CPU consumption.

        In vitro apical pressure created by 2 irrigation needles and a multisonic system in mandibular molars

        Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the apical pressure generated by 2 endodontic irrigation needles and the GentleWave system in mandibular molars. Materials and Methods: The mesial and distal root canals of 12 mandibular molars were irrigated with a 30-gauge close-end needle or with a 30-gauge open-end needle. Procedures were performed in the mesial and distal canals. The GentleWave procedure and irrigation at 1 mm from the apex in the distal roots using an open-end needle were used, respectively, as negative and positive controls. The apical pressure was measured using a data acquisition pressure setup. Apical pressure exerted by the different needles in the 2 different canal types was statistically compared using 2-way analysis of variance. Results: Significant differences were found in the apical pressure for both needles and the canal type. The lowest values were obtained with close-end needles and in mesial canals. Negative apical pressure values were obtained using GentleWave. Conclusions: The needle and the canal type influenced the apical pressure. The GentleWave procedure produced negative apical pressure.
