2020 Brain Tumor Research and Treatment Vol.8 No.1

Background: The Guideline Working Group of the Korean Society for Neuro-Oncology (KSNO) conducted the nationwide questionnaire survey for diverse queries facing to treat patients with brain tumor. As part III of the survey, the aim of this study is to evaluate the national patterns of clinical practice for patients with brain metastasis and primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL). Methods: A web-based survey was sent to all members of the KSNO by email. The survey included 7 questions of brain metastasis and 5 questions of PCNSL, focused on the management strategies in specific situations. All questions were developed by consensus of the Guideline Working Group. Results: In the survey about brain metastasis, respondents preferred surgical resection with adjuvant treatment for patients with a surgically accessible single brain metastatic lesion less than 3 cm in size without extracranial systemic lesions. However, most respondents considered radiosurgery for surgically inaccessible lesions. As the preferred treatment of multiple brain metastases according to the number of brain lesions, respondents tended to choose radiotherapy with increasing number of lesions Radiosurgery was mostly chosen for the brain metastases of less than or equal to 4. In the survey about PCNSL, a half of respondents choose high-dose methotrexate-based polychemotherapy as the first-line induction therapy for PCNSL. The consolidation and salvage therapy showed a little variation among respondents. For PCNSL patients with cerebrospinal fluid dissemination, intrathecal chemotherapy was most preferred. Conclusion: The survey demonstrates the prevailing clinical practice patterns for patients with brain metastasis and PCNSL among members of the KSNO. This information provides a point of reference for establishing a practical guideline in the management of brain metastasis and PCNSL.

Analysis of Phylogenetic Relationship of 30 Cultivars of Korean Mulberry (Rosales: Moraceae) in Korea

        Kwon, O-Chul,Kim, Hyun-Bok,Sung, Gyoo-Byung,Kim, Yong-Soon,Ju, Wan-Taek Korean Society of Sericultural Science 2018 International Journal of Industrial Entomology Vol.37 No.2

This study was carried out to understand phylogenetic relationships of the 30 mulberry cultivars converved in Korea based on the ITS rDNA region, and they were compared to 40 reference sequences from GenBank. The size and the G+C content of the ITS rDNA gene regions from the 30 Korean mulberry cultivars and 40 reference sequences varied from 612-630 bp and 58.19-61.62%, respectively. Based on the results of the comparative phylogenetic analysis of the ITS rDNA regions of the 30 Korean mulberry cultivars and 40 reference sequences, they were divided into three groups (Group 1, 2, and 3) and two subgroups (Group 1A and 1B within Group 1). The sequence lengths of the Korean mulberry cultivar numbers 1-26 and 27-30 were 615 bp and 616 bp, respectively. At 205 bp location of ITS1 rDNA region, the cultivar numbers 1-26 contain the nucleotide thymine but the cultivar numbers 27-30 contain the nucleotide adenine. In addition, the insertion of the nucleotide adenine at 206 bp location was found only in the four Korean mulberry cultivars (numbers 27-30). Based on these sequence information and phylogenetic result, the 30 Korean mulberry cultivars were identified as M. alba and M. australis. This study will contribute to the construction of genetic database constructions and accurate variety identifications for unidentified mulberry varieties in Korea.

        Kwon, Hyeok-Ran,Son, Seung-Wan,Han, Hye-Rim,Choi, Gyung-Ja,Jang, Kyoung-Soo,Choi, Yong-Ho,Lee, Sunog,Sung, Nack-Do,Kim, Jin-Cheol The Korean Society of Plant Pathology 2007 Plant Pathology Journal Vol.23 No.4

Pine wood nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, causes pine wilt disease in a number of Pinus species, which is one of the most serious plant diseases in forest, Korea. In the course of a search for nematicidal substances from endophytic fungi, Fusarium oxysporum EF119 out of the 23 fungal strains tested showed the strongest activity to B. xylophilus. Two nematicidal substances were isolated and identified as bikaverin and fusaric acid. Fusaric acid showed somewhat higher nematicidal activity against B. xylophilus than bikaverin; fusaric acid and bikaverin, at $100{\mu}g/ml$, killed B. xylophilus with mortality values of 50% and 43%, respectively. In addition, both compounds acted synergistically. This is the first report on the nematicidal activity of bikaverin and fusaric acid.

      • Evaluation of Mechanical Properties for Narrow-Gap Weld Zone in Reactor Coolant Loop

Kwon, Jae Do,Woo, Seung Wan,Lee, Choon Yeol,Kang, Suk Chull,Shin, Ho Sang Trans Tech Publications, Ltd. 2005 Key Engineering Materials Vol.297 No.-

Conventionally, shield metal arc welding (SMAW) process was applied to join pipes of RCL, which caused lot of loss in time and cost due to excessive heat input and defects in joining section. Recently, narrow-gap welding (NGW) process was introduced to overcome the disadvantages of SMAW. However, the application of NGW to nuclear power plant is not yet common because safety of NGW process is not proven. In present paper, the welded coupons are manufactured under different welding processes in carbon steel. Then, microstructure observations and various mechanical tests are performed. It is verified that the mechanical properties of carbon steel are greatly changed after repair welding process due to applied heat flux, and that the effect of post-welding heat treatment is beneficial.

2020 Brain Tumor Research and Treatment Vol.8 No.1

Background The Guideline Working Group of the Korean Society for Neuro-Oncology (KSNO) conducted a nationwide questionnaire survey for diverse queries faced in the treatment of brain tumors. As part II of the survey, the aim of this study is to evaluate the national patterns of clinical practice for patients with diffuse midline glioma and meningioma. Methods A web-based survey was sent to all members of the KSNO by email. The survey included 4 questions of diffuse midline glioma and 6 questions of meningioma (including 2 case scenarios). All questions were developed by consensus of the Guideline Working Group. Results In the survey about diffuse midline glioma, 76% respondents performed histologic confirmation to identify H3K27M mutation on immunohistochemical staining or sequencing methods. For treatment of diffuse midline glioma, respondents preferred concurrent chemoradiotherapy with temozolomide (TMZ) and adjuvant TMZ (63.8%) than radiotherapy alone (34.0%). In the survey about meningioma, respondents prefer wait-and-see policy for the asymptomatic small meningioma without peritumoral edema. However, a greater number of respondents had chosen surgical resection as the first choice for all large size meningiomas without exception, and small size meningiomas with either peritumoral edema or eloquent location. There was no single opinion with major consensus on long-term follow-up plans for asymptomatic meningioma with observation policy. As many as 68.1% of respondents answered that they would not add any adjuvant therapies for World Health Organization grade II meningiomas if the tumor was totally resected including dura. Conclusion The survey demonstrates the prevailing clinical practice patterns for patients with diffuse midline glioma and meningioma among members of the KSNO. This information provides a point of reference for establishing a practical guideline in the management of diffuse midline glioma and meningioma.

Effects of Gait Training Using Functional Electrical Stimulation on Stroke Patients' Balance and Gait Velocity

Kwon Young Kang,Wan Suk Choi,Ho Jung An,Ja Pung Koo,Joon Hee Lee,Young Dae Yun,Jung Sook Lee,Joung Youl Ju,Sang Bin Lee 국제물리치료학회 2011 Journal of International Academy of Physical Ther Vol.2 No.2

The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of gait training using functional electrical stimulation on the improvement of hemiplegic patients' functions for balance and gait velocity. The subjects of the experiment were determined to be 10 each hemiplegic patients who had been diagnosed with stroke or brain damage six months or longer earlier assigned to an experimental group and a control group respectively. The subjects were evaluated before the experiment using Tetrax and 10M gait tests, received gait training five times a week for four weeks using functional electrical stimulation and were evaluated after the experiment in the same method as used in the evaluation before the experiment. In order to examine differences between the experimental group that received gait training using functional electrical stimulation and the control group that was treated by functional electrical stimulation and received gait training thereafter, differences between before and after the experiment were analyzed using paired sample t-tests and differences in changes after the experiment between the experimental group and the control group were analyzed using independent sample t-tests in order to compare the two groups with each other. Experimental results showed significant differences in weight bearing, balance and gait velocity between before and after the experiment in the experimental group(p<.05). In the control group, whereas weight bearing and gait velocity did not show any significant difference between before and after the experiment(p>.05), balance showed significant differences(p<.05). Weight bearing, balance and gait velocity change rates showed significant differences between the experimental group and the control group(p<.05). In conclusion, it was indicated that gait training using functional electrical stimulation is effective for enhancing stroke patients' weight bearing rates, balance abilities and gait velocity.
