• Backpackers' Virtual Mobility

2008 Conference Proceedings Vol.9 No.0

Mobility is inherently part of the backpacker phenomenon. In the past the mobility has been physical, but recent innovations in communication technology, in particular online social communities, have added a virtual component to the mobility of backpackers. This study explores the complex sociality backpackers now maintain by examining the convergence of the internet and communication technologies and physical travel before, during, and after backpackers' trips. The results of the study suggest that backpackers now maintain a complex sociality made up of face to face interactions, virtual interactions, and co-presence. Backpackers have fully adapted the new communication tools into their travel activities.

      • Backpacker Activities and Personal Values : An Sem Approach

2008 Conference Proceedings Vol.9 No.0

Backpackers have been distinguished by their demographics, motivations, behaviors, and activities. This transnational study proposes a value-activity model that examines the causal relationship among personal values and travel activity participation for backpacker tourists. Backpackers' values, using a modified Rokeach values scale, and activities were measured using a questionnaire that was administered through Facebook and Lonely Planet's Thorn Tree Forums. The structural equation model suggests that backpackers' personal values can significantly influence the activities that they participate in, and the personal values of backpackers' are hierarchical which in tum creates a hierarchical structure for the activities that they participate in.

Phenotypic diversity, major genes and production potential of local chickens and guinea fowl in Tamale, northern Ghana

Brown, Michael Mensah,Alenyorege, Benjamin,Teye, Gabriel Ayum,Roessler, Regina Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2017 Animal Bioscience Vol.30 No.10

Objective: Our study provides information on phenotypes of local chickens and guinea fowl and their body measures as well as on major genes in local chickens in northern Ghana. Methods: Qualitative and morphometric traits were recorded on 788 local chickens and 394 guinea fowl in urban households in Tamale, Ghana. Results: The results showed considerable variation of color traits and numerous major genes in local chickens, while color variations and related genotypes in guinea fowl were limited. In local chickens, white was preferred for plumage, whereas dark colors were preferred for beak and shanks. More than half of the chickens carried at least one major gene, but the contributions of single gene carriers were low. All calculated allele frequencies were significantly lower than their expected Mendelian allele frequencies. We observed higher mean body weight and larger linear body measures in male as compared to female chickens. In female chickens, we detected a small effect of major genes on body weight and chest circumference. In addition, we found some association between feather type and plumage color. In guinea fowl, seven distinct plumage colors were observed, of which pearl grey pied and pearl grey were the most prevalent. Male pearl grey pied guinea fowl were inferior to pearl grey and white guinea fowl in terms of body weight, body length and chest circumference; their shank length was lower than that of pearl grey fowl. Conclusion: Considerable variation in qualitative traits of local chickens may be indicative of genetic diversity within local chicken populations, but major genes were rare. In contrast, phenotypic and genetic diversity in local guinea fowl is limited. Broader genetic diversity studies and evaluation of trait preferences of local poultry producers are required for the design of appropriate breeding programs.

Vol.21 No.2

The social improvement depends on the gradual evolution of the purpose-sensitive a ctivities, not on the inevitable revolution. The mode of production is just a means of production analysis and the relationship of production and productivity is not a economic notion. The advancement of productivity directly relates to the progress of science and technology and also it is the result of the human mental activities, not a simple material energy. The recent affairs of Eastern Europe is strong evidence to foretell the end of Marks-Leninism which has been un fallingly, preserved over the last forty years at least superficially.

Vol.21 No.2

From the far-sighted point of view, it is argued that the industry must make its positive efforts in order to ensure able man-power for its continuous growth and progress and that the industry must make a sufficient investment to the job training of its members. It is also argued that the future job training of the industry must make emphasis on the human aspect and furthermore make its members recognize the greatness of human being and also help them cultivate sound job-view, which makes it possible to understand that the employer and the employees is one some body not the opposite one.

Production of Hepatitis B Core Antigen in a Stirred Tank Bioreactor: The Influence of Temperature and Agitation

Tey, Beng Ti,Chua, Mung Ing,Chua, Ghee Sung,Ng, Michelle Yeen Tan,Biak, Dayang Radiah Awang,Tan, Wen Siang,Ling, Tau Chuan The Korean Society for Biotechnology and Bioengine 2006 Biotechnology and Bioprocess Engineering Vol.11 No.2

The influence of temperature and agitation on the growth of Escherichia coli expressing hepatitis B core antigen (HBcAg) in stirred tank bioreactor were investigated. The highest specific growth rate for E. coli$(0.844 h^{-1})$ was achieved at a temperature of $37^{\circ}C$ and an agitation speed of 250 rpm. The activation energy for the growth of the E. coli strain W3110lQ in the stirred tank bioreactor was estimated to be 11 kcal/mol. The highest protein yield was achieved at a temperature of $44^{\circ}C$ and an agitation speed of 250 rpm. The relative protein concentration at $44^{\circ}C$ is 30 and 6% higher compared to that at 30 and $37^{\circ}C$, respectively.

      • A Novel Remote Rehabilitation System with the Fusion of Noninvasive Wearable Device and Motion Sensing for Pulmonary Patients

Tey, Chuang-Kit,An, Jinyoung,Chung, Wan-Young Hindawi 2017 Computational and mathematical methods in medicine Vol.2017 No.-

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a type of lung disease caused by chronically poor airflow that makes breathing difficult. As a chronic illness, it typically worsens over time. Therefore, pulmonary rehabilitation exercises and patient management for extensive periods of time are required. This paper presents a remote rehabilitation system for a multimodal sensors-based application for patients who have chronic breathing difficulties. The process involves the fusion of sensory data—captured motion data by stereo-camera and photoplethysmogram signal by a wearable PPG sensor—that are the input variables of a detection and evaluation framework. In addition, we incorporated a set of rehabilitation exercises specific for pulmonary patients into the system by fusing sensory data. Simultaneously, the system also features medical functions that accommodate the needs of medical professionals and those which ease the use of the application for patients, including exercises for tracking progress, patient performance, exercise assignments, and exercise guidance. Finally, the results indicate the accurate determination of pulmonary exercises from the fusion of sensory data. This remote rehabilitation system provides a comfortable and cost-effective option in the healthcare rehabilitation system.

Optimal Conditions for Hepatitis B Cove Antigen Production in Shaked Flask Fermentation

Tey Beng Ti,Yong Kok Hoe,Ong Hong Puay,Ling Tau Chuan,Ong Swee Tin,Tan Yan Peng,Ariff Avbakariya,Tan Wen Siang The Korean Society for Biotechnology and Bioengine 2004 Biotechnology and Bioprocess Engineering Vol.9 No.5

The effects of various environmental factors such as pH (5, 6, 7, 8 and 9), temperature (30, 37 and $40^{\circ}C$) and rotational speed (150, 200 and 250 rpm) on the growth and the hepatitis B core antigen (HBcAg) production of Escherichia coli W3110IQ were examined in the present Study. The highest growth rate is achieved at pH 7, $37^{\circ}C$ and at a rotational Speed of 250 rpm which is 0.927 $h^{-1}$. The effect of pH on cell growth is more substantial compared to other parameters; it recorded a $123\%$ different between the highest growth rate (0.927 $h^{-1}$) at pH 7 and lowest growth at pH 5. The highest protein yield is achieved at pH 9, rotational speed of 250 rpm and $40^{\circ}C$. The yield of protein at pH 7 is $154\%$ higher compared to the lowest yield achieved at pH 5. There is about $28\%$ different of the protein yield for the E. coli cultivated at 250 rpm compared to that at 150 rpm which has the lowest HBcAg yield. The yield of protein at $40^{\circ}C$ is $38\%$ higher compared to the lowest yield achieved at $30^{\circ}C$.

BcI-2 Over-expression Reduced the Serum Dependency and Improved the Nutrient Metabolism in a NS0 Cells Culture

Tey Beng Ti,Al-Rubeai Mohamed The Korean Society for Biotechnology and Bioengine 2005 Biotechnology and Bioprocess Engineering Vol.10 No.3

The over-expression of Bcl-2 has greatly improved the culture period, specific growth rate, and maximum viable cell density of NS0 cells culture under low serum condition. Further analysis of these data suggests that a saturation model of the Monod type can be used to represent the relationships of specific growth rate and initial serum concentration. The ${\mu}_{max}$ and $K_s$ for the Bcl-2 cell line is $0.927day^{-1}\;and\;0.947\%(v/v)$ respectively, which are $21\%$ greate and $7\%$ lower respectively than its control counterpart. Study on the amino acid supplementation revealed that Bcl-2 cell lines possess greater improvement in the specific growth rate and maximum viable cell density compared to the control cell lines. A further increase in the amino acid supplementation has resulted a $17\%$ decrease in specific growth rate and no improvement in maximum viable cell density in the control culture. However, the Bcl-2 cell line exhibited a better growth characteristic in this culture condition compared to that of control cell lines. The higher specific growth rate and maximum viable cell density of the Bcl-2 cell line in medium fortified with serum and MEM EM suggested a more efficient nutrient metabolism compared to that in the control cell line. The low serum and amino acid utilisation rate and the higher cell yield may prove to be important in the development of serum/protein free culture.

Protective Effect of Bcl-2 in NS0 Myeloma Cell Culture is Greater in More Stressful Environments

Tey, B.T.,Al-Rubeai, M. The Korean Society for Biotechnology and Bioengine 2005 Biotechnology and Bioprocess Engineering Vol.10 No.6

In the present study, the protective effects of Bcl-2 over-expression in a suspension culture (without any adaptation) and spent medium (low nutrient and high toxic metabolite conditions) were investigated. In the suspension culture without prior adaptation, the viability of the control cell line fall to 0% by day 7, whereas the Bcl-2 cell line had a viability of 65%. The difference in the viability and viable cell density between the Bcl-2 and control cell lines was more apparent in the suspension culture than the static culture, and became even more apparent on day 6. Fluorescence microscopic counting revealed that the major mechanism of cell death in the control cell line in both the static and suspension cultures was apoptosis. For the Bcl-2 cell lines, necrosis was the major mode of cell death in the static culture, but apoptosis became equally important in the suspension culture. When the NS0 6A1 cell line was cultured in spent medium taken from a 14 day batch culture, the control cell line almost completely lost its viability by day 5, whereas, the Bcl-2 still had a viability of 73%. The viable cell density and viability of the Bcl-2 cell line cultivated in fresh medium were 2.2 and 2.7 fold higher, respectively, than those of the control cultures. However, the viable cell density and viability of the Bcl-2 cultivated in the spent medium were 8.7 and 7.8 fold higher, respectively, than those of the control cultures. Most of the dead cells in the control cell line were apoptotic; whereas, the major cell death mechanisms in the Bcl-2 cell line were necrotic.
