In the second part of this study, the crystal structure of Cr₂N precipitates was investigated utilizing transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Based on the analyses of SAD patterns with various zone axes, the crystal structure of Cr₂N was confirmed to be trigonal belonging to the space group P31m, and could be explained in terms of E-type occupational-ordering model. Three sets of superlattice reflections (001), (⅓⅓0) and (⅓⅓1) distinguishing trigonal from hcp were identified in Cr₂N superstructure, and the important characteristics of these reflections were discussed in comparison with the previous studies. A computational model, which can describe the mechanically-induced martensite transformation of metastable austenite, is suggested. The strain originated from the transformation of metastable austenite into martensite is evaluated by assessing the difference of the nucleation rate of variants, which was determined from the interaction energy between externally applied stress state and lattice deformation based on the K-S relationship. A self-consistent model with the Eshelby's solution is employed to predict the deformation behavior. A simple iterative calculation was carried out to predict the stress-strain behaviors under the uniaxial stress state. The calculated results are compared with the experimental data for various strain rates. Good agreement is found between the calculated and experimental values of transformation kinetics and stress-strain behavior.

We investigated the effects of methanol extract of Fructus Chebula (MEFC) on local and systemic anaphylaxis. Passive cutaneous anaphylaxis inhibited to 61.42 12.8 % by oral administration of MEFC(I.0 glkg). MEFC inhibited compound 48/80-induced anaphylactic shock 100% with doses of 0.05-1.0 glkg . Administrations of MEFC (1.0 glkg) 60 min before, 5 min after, and 10 min after the compound 48/80 treatment were shown the mortality rates as 0%. MEFC (0.01-1.0 glkg) inhibited the histamine release significantly from the rat peritoneal mast cells by compound 48/80. These results indicate that MEFC inhibits mast cell mediated anaphylactic reactions by inhibition of mast cell degranulation in vivo and in vitro.

Purpose: With increasing frequency, Yersinia enterocolitica is being recognized as an important bacterial cause of acute gastrointestinal infection with abdominal pain. In addition, the association of Y. enterocolitica infections with acute appendicitis has been suggested. This study was undertaken to ascertain whether Y. enterocolitica is a possible infectious agent in acute appendicitis. Methods: Between December 2007 and April 2008, 162 patients who underwent appendectomy for presumed appendicitis, enrolled in this prospective study. After surgical excision of appendix, a portion of each specimen was cultured for Y. enterocolitica with highly selective media (Cefsulodin-Irgasan-Novobiocin agar). Results: Pathologically, 150 of the patients had appendicitis and 12 patients had normal appendices. Only one of the 150 patients (0.7%) with appendicitis was found to be culture positive for Y. enterocolitica, while it was not detected from normal appendices. Conclusion: The authors were unable to implicate Y. enterocolitica as a major pathogen in acute appendicitis within the Seoul area. However, we thought there to be more need for investigation for association of Y. enterocolitica with acute appendicitis over a broader area and season.

Aims: Considering the frequency and prognostic impact of acute kidney injury (AKI) in cirrhotic patients, early detection and appropriate management are very important. AKI could be divided into prerenal azotemia (PRA) and acute tubular necrosis (ATN). Although appropriate management is quite different between two conditions, appropriate tests for differentiation have not been presented. Urinary-N-acetyl- β-D-glucosaminidase (NAG) have been proposed as a good tubular injury marker in many studies, but its efficacy is not clear in cirrhotic patients. This study was performed to evaluate the usefulness of urinary NAG in cirrhotic patients. Methods: Hospitalized patients with liver cirrhosis who performed urinary NAG test from September 2016 to February 2017 were included. The patients with malignancy or chronic kidney disease were excluded. AKI was defined by IAC-AKI criteria. Results: A total of 59 cirrhotic patients were included. Age was 58.8±12.0 years and 41 patients (69.5%) were men. Serum creatinine and urinary NAG scores were 1.0±0.3 mg/dL and 30.0±29.6 U/g urinary Cr, respectively. AKI was not combined in 41 patients (69.5%), while PRA and ATN were combined in 15 (25.4%) and 3 (5.1%) patients, respectively. Serum creatinine level was significantly higher in patients with PRA (1.6±0.2 mg/dL, P<0.001) and those with ATN (1.5±0.4 mg/dL, P=0.002) than those without AKI (0.8±0.2 mg/dL), while it did not differ between patients with PRA and those with ATN (P=0.422). Urinary NAG level was comparable between patients without AKI and those with PRF (22.6±15.6 vs. 38.2±40.6 U/g urinary Cr, P=0.241), while it was significantly higher in patients with ATN (88.5±46.9 U/g urinary Cr) than those without AKI (P=0.001) and those with PRA (P=0.025). Conclusions: The urinary NAG level was significantly increased in patients with ATN in patients with liver cirrhosis. It could be useful for discrimination of cirrhotic patients with ATN among those with AKI.

Background/Aims: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of rebamipide on tight junction proteins in the esophageal mucosa in a rat model of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Methods: GERD was created in rats by tying the proximal stomach. The rats were divided into a control group, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) group, and a PPI plus rebamipide (PPI+R) group. Pantoprazole (5 mg/kg) was administered intraperitoneally to the PPI and PPI+R groups. An additional dose of rebamipide (100 mg/kg) was administered orally to the PPI+R group. Mucosal erosions, epithelial thickness, and leukocyte infiltration into the esophageal mucosa were measured in isolated esophagi 14 days after the procedure. A Western blot analysis was conducted to measure the expression of claudin-1, -3, and -4. Results: The mean surface area of mucosal erosions, epithelial thickness, and leukocyte infiltration were lower in the PPI group and the PPI+R group than in the control group. Western blot analysis revealed that the expression of claudin-3 and -4 was significantly higher in the PPI+R group than in the control group. Conclusions: Rebamipide may exert an additive effect in combination with PPI to modify the tight junction proteins of the esophageal mucosa in a rat model of GERD. This treatment might be associated with the relief of GERD symptoms. (Gut Liver 2018;12:46-50)

Purpose: This study investigated the immediate biomechanical effects of unilateral mastication for 10 minutes on the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) with 21 healthy adult participants. Methods: The gum group chewed gum on the right side for 10 minutes, and the control group rested for 10 minutes. Biomechanical data were obtained using a three-dimensional infrared camera before and after intervention. An independent t-test assessed the variation of kinematic data to identify differences between before and after intervention. Results: Among biomechanical variables, the gum group’s length of the left forehead middle region and the temporomandibular joint angle decreased compared to the control group (p<0.05). Conclusion: Caution with unilateral masticatory activity is recommended, as unilateral mastication causes biomechanical changes due to excessive load on the soft tissues of the contralateral TMJ.
