In order to estimate the availability of ruminally-protected Lys (RPLys) and Met (RPMet), quantitative changes of free Lys and Met in the total abomasal outflow and feces were determined in three Holstein heifers with a T-shaped duodenal cannula. RPLys was prepared by coating Lys with fat and RPMet with a pH-sensitive polymer. RPLys and RPMet containing 30 g of each amino acid were supplied together to heifers, and total abomasal outflow was collected hourly from the T-shaped duodenal cannula for a 48 h period. Collected abomasal outflows were fractionated into liquid and solid phases to measure free Lys and Met concentration. At 2 wk after total abomasal outflow sampling, heifers were supplied RPLys and RPMet together again, and total feces were collected every 12 h for a 3 d period t estimate excreted RPLys and RPMet in feces. The amounts of Lys and Met recovered from the liquid fractions of abomasal outflow were estimated to be $23.9{\pm}8.3%$ and $68.6{\pm}3.6%$ (p=0.008) of RPLys and RPMet ingested, respectively. Final intestinal disappearances of Lys and Met were estimated to be $49.5{\pm}2.6%$ and $78.2%{\pm}6.5%$ (p=0.015) of ingested RPLys and RPMet, respectively.

We study quantum phase transitions in the 1/3 plateau state of the three-leg spin-1/2 tube, where the low-energy effective chirality degree of freedom plays an essential role. Using the densitymatrix renormalization group and the effective chirality model, we find that, as the leg couplingincreases, the chirality liquid, a novel spin imbalance phase and the vector-spin-chirality orderedphase emerge without closing the plateau spin gap. We also clarify the role of the S3-symmetry ofthe spin tube, behind these quantum phase transitions.

Abstract

T cells are both producers and consumers of cytokines, and autocrine cytokine signaling plays a critical role in T cell immunity. IL-15 is a homeostatic cytokine for T cells that also controls inflammatory immune responses. An autocrine role of T cell-derived IL-15, however, remains unclear. Here we examined IL-15 expression and signaling upon effector T cell differentiation in mice, and, surprisingly, found that CD4 T cells did not express IL-15. CD4 T cells lacked Il15 gene reporter activity, did not contain IL-15 transcripts, and did not produce IL-15Rα, the proprietary IL-15 receptor required for IL-15 trans-presentation. Moreover, IL-15 failed to inhibit Th17 cell differentiation and failed to generate Foxp3+ Treg cells in vitro. IL-2, which utilizes the same IL-2Rβ/γc receptor complex, however, successfully did so. Exogenous IL-15 only exerted bioactivity and controlled T cell differentiation when it was trans-presented by IL-15Rα. Consequently, IL-15Rα-bound IL-15, but not free IL-15, suppressed Th17 cell differentiation and induced Treg cell generation. Collectively, these results reveal the absence of an IL-15 autocrine loop in CD4 T cells and strongly suggest that IL-15 trans-presentation by non-CD4 T cells is the primary mechanism via which IL-15 controls CD4 effector T cell differentiation.

Highlights

Unlike most other γc cytokines, IL-15 is not produced by activated CD4 T cells.

Free IL-15 phosphorylates STAT5 but does not affect CD4 T cell differentiation.

IL-15Rα-bound IL-15, but not free IL-15, suppresses Th17 cell generation.

IL-15 trans-presentation is required to control CD4 effector T cell differentiation.

We report a measurement of the ratio R(D*) = B((B) over bar (0) -> D*(+)tau(-)(nu) over bar (tau))/B((B) over bar (0) -> D*(+)l(-)(nu) over bar (l))where l denotes an electron or a muon. The results are based on a data sample containing 772 x 10(6) B (B) over bar pairs recorded at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e(+)e(-) collider. We select a sample of B-0(B) over bar (0) pairs by reconstructing both B mesons in semileptonic decays to D*(-/+)l(+/-). We measure R(D*) = 0.302 +/- 0.030(stat) +/- 0.011(syst), which is within 1.6 sigma of the Standard Model theoretical expectation, where the standard deviation sigma includes systematic uncertainties. We use this measurement to constrain several scenarios of new physics in a model-independent approach.

A doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG), which is one of the variable speed generator, applied to a gas engine cogeneration system has been investigated. To operate during a blackout as an emergency power supply is one of important roles for the gas engine cogeneration system. However, the DFIG requires the initial excitation for startup during a blackout because DFIG has no excitation source. In this paper, the excitation method to generate a rated voltage at the primary side during a blackout, which is called “blackout start” has been proposed. In addition, a stand-alone operation following the blackout start has been investigated using both computer simulation and experiments with a gas engine simulator. Moreover, the proposed blackout start and stand-alone operation method has been verified through experiments using a real gas engine.

We have constructed three characteristic internship programs which were based on the different aspects of view by the grant in aid from MEXT of Japanese government. The most outstanding program is what we call “Market Internship”, where the students directly approach the market in which the engineering technologies are utilized. Then they must find out the problems and advantages of engineering technologies from the view of consumers. The experience would result in the enhancement of motivation to study the engineering technologies. It would be substantially effective in engineering education curriculums that the engineers of private companies in which university students will get their own jobs in near future could take important roles to conduct them. We believe that this activity would effective in reducing gaps they would feel between before and after getting jobs in practical society, and lowering the ratio of unemployment after getting jobs

Recent studies proved turbulent flow properties in high-rise building models differ from those in low-rise building models by comparing turbulent statistics. Although it is important to understand the flow characteristics within and above high-rise building models in the study of urban environment, it is still unknown and under investigation. For this reason, we performed wind tunnel experiment using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) to investigate and identify the turbulent flow properties and characteristic flow patterns in high-rise building models. In particular, we focus on instantaneous flow field near the canopy and extracted flow field when homogeneous flow field were observed. As a result, six characteristic flow patterns were identified and the relationship between these flow patterns and turbulent organized structure were shown.
