Background: Erythema annulare centrifugum (EAC) is characterized by expanding erythematous rings. In most cases, underlying diseases such as infection, drug and pregnancy accompanied EAC. A previous study reported the pathogenesis of hypersensitivity reaction to fungal infection. In another study, fungal infection was evident in 48 of 66 patients with EAC. Objectives: The etiology and related disease in most cases of EAC is unknown. The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between EAC and underlying cutaneous fungal infections. Methods: In a retrospective study, 100 EAC patients confirmed by clinical or histopathological examination were enrolled. The patients` electronic medical records were reviewed. Results: 26 EAC patients had cutaneous fungal infection, such as tinea pedis and tinea unguium. Of them, 16 patients underwent fungal treatment. 9 of 16 patients showed improvement of EAC lesion with fungal treatment. 6 patients had history of other infections, 6 had endocrine disorders, 5 had drug history, 5 were pregnant and 1 had malignancy. Conclusion: EAC is thought to be associated with fungal infection. This study showed that the high prevalence of cutaneous fungal infection and the some response to fungal treatment in EAC patients. However, it was difficult to confirm a direct association in this study. In the future, there is a need for a larger cohort study including allergic confirmation test to prove causal association between EAC and fungal infection.

We investigate the characteristics of self-assembled quantum dot infrared photodetectors(QDIPs) based on doping level. Two kinds of QDIP samples are prepared using molecular beam epitaxy : $n^+-i(QD)-n^+$ QDIP with undoped quantum dot(QD) active region and $n^+-n^-(QD)-n^+$ QDIP containing Si direct doped QDs. InAs QDIPs were grown on semi-insulating GaAs (100) wafers by molecular-beam epitaxy. Both top and bottom contact GaAs layer are Si doped at $2{\times}10^{18}/cm^3$. The QD layers are grown by two-monolayer of InAs deposition and capped by InGaAs layer. For the $n^+-n^-(QD)-n^+$ structure, Si dopant is directly doped in InAs QD at $2{\times}10^{17}/cm^3$. Undoped and doped QDIPs show a photoresponse peak at about $8.3{\mu}m$, ranging from $6{\sim}10{\mu}m$ at 10 K. The intensity of the doped QDIP photoresponse is higher than that of the undoped QDIP on same temperature. Undoped QDIP yields a photoresponse of up to 50 K, whereas doped QDIP has a response of up to 30 K only. This result suggests that the doping level of QDs should be appropriately determined by compromising between photoresponsivity and operating temperature.

<P><B>Significance</B></P><P>RNA helicases are a large family of enzymes that regulate the generation and maintenance of RNA. However, the physiologic roles of RNA helicases in animal aging remained unknown. Here we show that an RNA helicase, helicase 1 (HEL-1), extends the lifespan of the roundworm <I>Caenorhabditis elegans</I> by up-regulating the longevity transcription factor forkhead box O (FOXO). Our finding suggests that an RNA helicase can have rather specific roles in animal longevity. A number of studies show that variants of FOXO are linked to human aging and longevity. In addition, the mammalian HEL-1 homolog has been implicated in cellular aging. Thus, our work may have direct implications in mammalian aging, and the human HEL-1 homolog may work with FOXO to increase lifespan.</P><P>The homeostatic maintenance of the genomic DNA is crucial for regulating aging processes. However, the role of RNA homeostasis in aging processes remains unknown. RNA helicases are a large family of enzymes that regulate the biogenesis and homeostasis of RNA. However, the functional significance of RNA helicases in aging has not been explored. Here, we report that a large fraction of RNA helicases regulate the lifespan of <I>Caenorhabditis elegans</I>. In particular, we show that a DEAD-box RNA helicase, helicase 1 (HEL-1), promotes longevity by specifically activating the DAF-16/forkhead box O (FOXO) transcription factor signaling pathway. We find that HEL-1 is required for the longevity conferred by reduced insulin/insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) signaling (IIS) and is sufficient for extending lifespan. We further show that the expression of HEL-1 in the intestine and neurons contributes to longevity. HEL-1 enhances the induction of a large fraction of DAF-16 target genes. Thus, the RNA helicase HEL-1 appears to promote longevity in response to decreased IIS as a transcription coregulator of DAF-16. Because HEL-1 and IIS are evolutionarily well conserved, a similar mechanism for longevity regulation via an RNA helicase-dependent regulation of FOXO signaling may operate in mammals, including humans.</P>

<P>Metal sulfide-based nanostructured materials have emerged as promising catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and significant progress has been achieved in enhancing their activity and durability for the HER. The understanding of nanoscale size-dependent catalytic activities can suggest critical information regarding catalytic reactivity, providing the scientific basis for the design of advanced catalysts. However, nanoscale size effects in metal sulfide-based HER catalysts have not yet been established fully, due to the synthetic difficulty in precisely size-controlled metal sulfide nanoparticles. Here we report the preparation of molybdenum sulfide (MoS2) nanoparticles with monolayer precision from one to four layers with the nearly constant basal plane size of 5 nm, and their size-dependent catalytic activity in the HER. Using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we identified the most favorable single-, double-, and triple-layer MoS2 model structures for the HER, and calculated elementary step energetics of the HER over these three model structures. Combining HER activity measurements and the DFT calculation results, we establish that the turnover frequency of MoS2 nanoparticles in the HER increases in a quasi-linear manner with decreased layer numbers. Cobalt-promoted MoS2 nanoparticles also exhibited similar HER activity trend. We attribute the higher HER activity of smaller metal sulfide nanoparticles to the higher degree of oxidation, higher Mo–S coordination number, formation of the 1T phase, and lower activation energy required to overcome transition state. This insight into the nanoscale size-dependent HER activity trend will facilitate the design of advanced HER catalysts as well as other hydrotreating catalysts.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/ancac3/2015/ancac3.2015.9.issue-4/acsnano.5b00786/production/images/medium/nn-2015-007865_0008.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/nn5b00786'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>
