The purpose of this study is to find an optimal R&D method of products by applying dynamic characteristics such as signal-to-noise ratio. Taguchi proposed a new experimental method for parameter design. He quantified quality in terms of the total loss incurred by a society from the time the product is shipped to the customer. The parameter design is a process for finding product designs that are insensitive to noise such as manufacturing and environmental variabilities. This can be achived by employing the signal-to-noise(S/N) ratio to mesure quality characteristics and orthogonal arays to study many design parameter that is a time and cost effective method for R&D application of dynamic characteristics.

The inulinase gene (INU1) from Kluyveromyces marxianus NCYC2887 was overexpressed by using the GAL10 promotor in a △gal80 strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The inulinase gene lacking the original signal sequence was fused in-frame to a mating factor α signal sequence for secretory expression. Use of the △gal80 strain allowed for the galactose-free induction of inulinase expression using a glucose-only medium. Shake-flask cultivation in YPD medium produced 34.6 U/ml of the recombinant inulinase, which was approximately 13-fold higher than that produced by K. marxianus NCYC2887. It was found that the use of the △gal80 strain improved the expression of inulinase in the recombinant S. cerevisiae in both aerobic and anaerobic conditions by about 2.9- and 1.7- fold, respectively. A 5-l fed-batch fermentation using YPD medium was performed under aerobic condition with glucose feeding, which resulted in the inulinase production of 31.7 U/ml at the OD600 of 67. Ethanol fermentation of dried powder of Jerusalem artichoke, an inulin-rich biomass, was also performed using the recombinant S. cerevisiae expressing INU1 and K. marxianus NCYC2887. Fermentation in a 5-l scale fermentor was carried out at an aeration rate of 0.2 vvm, an agitation rate of 300 rpm, and with the pH controlled at 5.0. The temperature was maintained at 30oC and 37oC, respectively, for the recombinant S. cerevisiae and K. marxianus. The maximum productivities of ethanol were 59.0 and 53.5 g/l, respectively.

This paper presents an average current mode buck dimmable light-emitting diode (LED) driver for large-scale single-string LED backlighting applications. The proposed integrated current control technique can provide exact current control signals by using an autozeroed integrator to enhance the accuracy of the average current of LEDs while driving a large number of LEDs. Adoption of discontinuous low-side current sensing leads to power loss reduction. Adoption of a fast-settling technique allows the LED driver to enter into the steady state within three switching cycles after the dimming signal is triggered. Implemented in a 0.35-mu m HV CMOS process, the proposed LED driver achieves 1.7% LED current error and 98.16% peak efficiency over an input voltage range of 110 to 200 V while driving 30 to 50 LEDs.

Patient preferences, convenience, and bone turnover markers were evaluated for the monthly ibandronate over the weekly risedronate regimen in Korean postmenopausal osteoporotic women. This was a 6-month, prospective, randomized, open-label, multicenter study with a two-period and two-sequence crossover treatment design. After a 30-day screening period, eligible participants with postmenopausal osteoporosis were randomized to receive either monthly oral ibandronate 150 mg for 3 months followed by weekly oral risedronate 35 mg for 12 weeks (sequence A) or the same regimen in reverse order (sequence B). Patient preference and convenience were evaluated by questionnaire. The changes in serum C-telopeptide after 3 months of treatment were analyzed. A total of 365 patients were enrolled in this study (sequence A 182, sequence B 183). Of patients expressing a preference (83.4%), 74.8% preferred the monthly ibandronate regimen over the weekly regimen (25.2%). More women stated that the monthly ibandronate regimen was more convenient (84.2%) than the weekly regimen (15.8%). There was no significant difference in the change in bone turnover marker between the two treatments. The two regimens were similarly tolerable. There were fewer adverse events in the monthly ibandronate group compared to the weekly risedronate group in terms of gastrointestinal side effects (nausea and abdominal distension). This study revealed a strong preference and convenience for monthly ibandronate over weekly risedronate in Korean postmenopausal osteoporotic women. There was no significant difference in change of bone turnover marker and safety profile between the two regimens.

Sepsis still remains the major cause of late morbidity and mortality after severe thermal injury. Numerous studies have shown that severe thermal injury results in major alterations of many aspects of immunity. It has been noted by many studies that cell mediated immunity is most consistently and profoundly suppressed among these immune impairments. Attention has recently been focused on restoring to the normal immune response by use of immunomodualating agents in burned patients. The aim of this experiment is to investigate the changes of immune response by immunomodulating agents;r-interferon and polyinosinic-polycytidylic acid(poly I:C)in severe thermal injury. Lymphocytes were isolated from peripheral blood of burned rats with or without administrations of r-interferon and poly I:C on the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th and 14th postburn days and changes of their subsets were observed and stimulation index were measured after stimulation with mitogens(PHA,Con-A and PWM). Also the lymphocytes from the burned rats were mixed with r-interferon or poly I:C and stimulated with the mitogens in vitro. Status of immune response were evaluated by lymphocyte counts, T cell subset and mitogen stimulation index. The results were as follows; 1. The lymphocyte counts decreased markedly in both the burn control group and all the drug injected groups and there was no statistically significant difference between the both groups. 2. The total T cell decreased in number in both the burn control and drug injected groups. A significant decrease of total T cell appeared at 5th day in the r-interferon injected group, and at 5th and 7th day in the poly I:C injected group. Th to Ts ratio decreased in the burn control group, but there was no significant difference between the burn control and the drug injected groups. 3. PHA, Con-A and PWM stimulation index increased in the burn control groups in comparison with the normal control group. In conclusion, after extensive thermal injury the immune modulating agents had no effect in changes of total lymphocyte count, but the immune response for mitogen stimulation with these agents was changed variable.

Objective: To evaluate the relationship between anthropometric measurements and renal length and volume measured with ultrasound in Korean children who have morphologically normal kidneys, and to create simple equations to estimate the renal sizes using the anthropometric measurements. Materials and Methods: We examined 794 Korean children under 18 years of age including a total of 394 boys and 400 girls without renal problems. The maximum renal length (L) (cm), orthogonal anterior-posterior diameter (D) (cm) and width (W) (cm) of each kidney were measured on ultrasound. Kidney volume was calculated as 0.523 x L x D x W (cm3). Anthropometric indices including height (cm), weight (kg) and body mass index (m2/kg) were collected through a medical record review. We used linear regression analysis to create simple equations to estimate the renal length and the volume with those anthropometric indices that were mostly correlated with the US-measured renal sizes. Results: Renal length showed the strongest significant correlation with patient height (R2, 0.874 and 0.875 for the right and left kidneys, respectively, p < 0.001). Renal volume showed the strongest significant correlation with patient weight (R2, 0.842 and 0.854 for the right and left kidneys, respectively, p < 0.001). The following equations were developed to describe these relationships with an estimated 95% range of renal length and volume (R2, 0.826-0.884, p < 0.001): renal length = 2.383 + 0.045 x Height (± 1.135) and = 2.374 + 0.047 x Height (± 1.173) for the right and left kidneys, respectively; and renal volume = 7.941 + 1.246 x Weight (± 15.920) and = 7.303 + 1.532 x Weight (± 18.704) for the right and left kidneys, respectively. Conclusion: Scatter plots between height and renal length and between weight and renal volume have been established from Korean children and simple equations between them have been developed for use in clinical practice.

The growing integration of intermittent renewable sources like offshore wind energy increases the need for transferring electric energy over long distances, which may include sea crossings. One of the solutions available for bulk electric power transmission across large distances encompassing wide and deep sea is using HVDC submarine power cables. However, there are no standards or research related to the calculation of the continuous allowable current with various ocean conditions of a DC power cable that does not have an alternating magnetic field. In this study, assuming the typical two types of subsea cable models and two areas of the south coast and the west coast marine conditions, a continuous allowable current simulation of DC cables was performed. As a simulation result, the DC cable continuous allowable current find out the gradient reduction characteristics based on subsea base depth.
