        The role of miRNA‑155 in monocrotaline‑induced pulmonary arterial hypertension through c‑Fos/NLRP3/caspase‑1

        Background Nisoldipine can effectively suppress pulmonary arterial smooth muscle cell proliferation and c-Fos expression. Objective To identify the mechanism of the anti-inflammatory effects in monocrotaline-induced pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), focusing on the c-Fos/NLRP3/caspase-1 pathway. Results In a mice model of monocrotaline-induced PAH, miRNA-155 expression was increased. In an in vitro model, overexpression of miRNA-155 promoted inflammation and induced c-Fos, NLRP3, and caspase-1 protein expression. The inhibition of c-Fos reduced the effects of miRNA-155 on inflammation in an in vitro model of monocrotaline-induced PAH. The inhibition of NLRP3 reduced the effects of miRNA-155 on inflammation in an in vitro model of monocrotaline-induced PAH. Conclusions miRNA-155 increased inflammation in monocrotaline-induced PAH through c-Fos/NLRP3/caspase-1.

        PacCAF: a Grid Portal in Pacific Asia for the CDF Experiment

        We present the PacCAF (Pacific CDF Analysis Farm) computing model for the CDF (Collider Detector at Fermilab) experiment. The PacCAF is a portal for job submission to a pool of computing nodes collected from the LCG (LHC Computing Grid) and the OSG (Open Science Grid) sites in the Pacific Asia region. It has a suit of services for user authentication, software distribution, and network connection to worker nodes. It also provides a web-based online monitoring system for the status of batch jobs and the processes running on worker nodes. The PacCAF architecture is modular and is easy to modify. We discuss the upgrade from being a dedicated local cluster to joining shared resources in a Grid computing environment.       • 1997~2000년에 발생된 황사에 관한 연구

        Joint monitoring of yellow sand (YS) phenomena occurred from 1997 to 2000 was carried out. It was found that the YS in source regions occurred in any time during the year, while the severe dust storms occurred frequently from March to May after the spring thaw. Wind erosion occurred usually with wind greater than about 8 ms^-1 in the source region in any seasons. However, severe YS phenomenon found to occur with wind greater than 15 ms^-1 at least for 3 hours or more. In source regions, YS occurred over 60∼120 days per year. In Korea, YS was found to occur 8∼12 cases per year with 12-22 YS days. It was recorded that maximum concentrations of TSP were 989∼1396 ㎍ m^-3 with PM10 values of 861∼996 ㎍ m^-3 and with the lowest visibility of 1.4∼1.6km. In Mongolia, however, it was observed that the number of dusty days decreased due to the increase in rainy days.

        Comparative Analysis of Logistic Regression, Support Vector Machine and Artificial Neural Network for the Differential Diagnosis of Benign and Malignant Solid Breast Tumors by the Use of Three-Dimensional Power Doppler Imaging

        Objective: Logistic regression analysis (LRA), Support Vector Machine (SVM) and a neural network (NN) are commonly used statistical models in computeraided diagnostic (CAD) systems for breast ultrasonography (US). The aim of this study was to clarify the diagnostic ability of the use of these statistical models for future applications of CAD systems, such as three-dimensional (3D) power Doppler imaging, vascularity evaluation and the differentiation of a solid mass. Materials and Methods: A database that contained 3D power Doppler imaging pairs of non-harmonic and tissue harmonic images for 97 benign and 86 malignant solid tumors was utilized. The virtual organ computer-aided analysis-imaging program was used to analyze the stored volumes of the 183 solid breast tumors. LRA, an SVM and NN were employed in comparative analyses for the characterization of benign and malignant solid breast masses from the database. Results: The values of area under receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, referred to as Az values for the use of non-harmonic 3D power Doppler US with LRA, SVM and NN were 0.9341, 0.9185 and 0.9086, respectively. The Az values for the use of harmonic 3D power Doppler US with LRA, SVM and NN were 0.9286, 0.8979 and 0.9009, respectively. The Az values of six ROC curves for the use of LRA, SVM and NN for non-harmonic or harmonic 3D power Doppler imaging were similar. Conclusion: The diagnostic performances of these three models (LRA, SVM and NN) are not different as demonstrated by ROC curve analysis. Depending on user emphasis for the use of ROC curve findings, the use of LRA appears to provide better sensitivity as compared to the other statistical models.         Implementation of Grover Quantum Search via Cavity Quantum Electrodynamics

        We propose a scheme for implementing two-qubit Grover quantum search based on the atomatom dipole-dipole interaction (DDI) and the atom-cavity interaction (ACI) via cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED). In the scheme, the atoms in the cavity are not required to be addressed individually and all the two-qubit conditional phase operations required to achieve the two-qubit Grover quantum search can be implemented directly in the cavity by choosing the interaction time appropriately. Thus, the scheme does not require any auxiliary single-qubit rotation operations to be performed on the atoms, which leads to potential speed up of the quantum operation and decreases the experimental complexity. Moreover, the scheme is insensitive to both the cavity decay and the thermal eld because the photon-number-dependent parts in the evolution operator are canceled with the assistance of a strong classical field. We propose a detailed procedure and experimentally analyze its feasibility.         Does multicultural education affect bachelor of social work students’ attitudes? The Taiwanese case of female Southeast Asian marriage immigration

        In the past two decades, intra-Asia cross-border marriage immigration has become a significant phenomenon. This study collected questionnaire data from Bachelor of Social Work students (n = 1,232) in Taiwan to explore the influences of multicultural education, intergroup contact experience, and demographic characteristics on students’ attitudes toward female Southeast Asian marriage migrants. Regression analysis revealed that students’ attitudes are improved by direct contact with female Southeast Asian marriage migrants but are not correlated with students’ demographic characteristics. Although pre-college multicultural education improves students’ attitudes, college-level multicultural education adversely affects the attitudes of students who perform poorly in multicultural courses. These findings have valuable implications for social work educators.

        Risk assessment of metabolic syndrome in adolescents using the triglyceride/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio and the total cholesterol/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio

        Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the distributions of the triglyceride (TG) to high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) ratio and total cholesterol (TC) to HDL-C ratio, and to explore their usefulness as markers of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in Korean adolescents. Methods: We obtained data for 2,721 adolescents (1,436 boys and 1,285 girls) aged 10–18 years who participated in the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys from 2008 to 2010. International Diabetes Federation criteria were used to define MetS. Results: : There were no significant gender-related differences in TG/HDL-C or TC/ HDL-C ratios. These lipid ratios showed significant associations with homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and waist circumference. Areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve to identify MetS were 0.947 for TG/HDL-C and 0.924 for TC/HDL-C, which were higher than that of HOMA-IR (0.822). Optimal cutoff values (sensitivity, specificity) of TG/HDL-C and TC/HDL-C ratios for MetS prediction were 3.3 (85.7%, 89.9%), and 3.8 (92.9%, 82.8%), respectively. Odds ratio (OR; 95% confidence intervals [CIs]) for MetS in adolescents with TC/HDL-C ratio above the cutoff value was 14.8 (2.8–77.4), while that for TG/HDL-C ratio about the cutoff value was 30.6 (6.0–157.6). In adolescents who had both lipid ratios above the cutoff values, the OR (95% CI) for MetS was 36.2 (7.2–186.2). Conclusion: TG/HDL-C and TC/HDL-C ratios are useful markers of metabolic syndrome with high predictive value in Korean adolescents.

        Water spray heat transfer through a piezoelectric atomizer with a single-hole micronozzle

        We report an experimental study on the flow and heat transfer for a single microhole of water spray impingement on an indium tin oxide (ITO) heating plate using a piezoelectric atomizer. A microhole of d j = 35 µm was used and tested with a volumetric flow rate of 0.22 cm 3 /min for three different spray heights of 10, 20 and 30 mm and five heater initial temperatures of 25 o C, 50 o C, 100 o C, 150 o C, and 200 o C. Through the optical measuring techniques of the microparticle image velocimetry (µPIV) as well as interferometric particle imaging (IPI) and micro laser-induced fluorescence (µLIF), the velocity field, such as spray centerline velocity, droplet impact velocity and impact crater diameter, including impinged liquid film thickness and heat transfer performance (CHF) can be measured and calculated. The effects of the spray height and initial heater temperature on the flow and thermal characteristics are presented and discussed herein. The experimental results show that both the spray centerline velocity and spray droplet impact velocity were significantly influenced by the initial surface temperature as well as by the spray height. As a result, the cooling performance would be, in turn, affected by the aforesaid two parameters.

        Inhibition of Calcium Transport by (1R,9S)-β-HydrastineHydrochloride in PC12 Cells

        effects of (1R,9S)-β2+ transport in rat pheochromo-cytoma PC12 cells were investigated. In the presence of external Ca2+, BHSH at 100M inhibited K+ (56 mM)-induced dopamine release, and K+-induced Ca2+ influx and a sustained rise of [Ca2+]i. In addition, BHSH at100 M reduced the sustained rise of [Ca2+]i elicited by 20 mM cafeine, but not by 1M thapsigargin, inpresence of external Ca2+. These results suggest that BHSH inhibited K+-induced dopamine release and [Ca2+]iinflux, and store-operated Ca2+ channels activated by cafeine, but not by thapsigargin, in PC12 cells.
