The characteristics of combustion and pollutant emission from a fluidized bed incinerator, in which waste activated sludge from municipal sewage treatment plant was burnt on the staged combustion modes, were investigated under the several operating conditions. The dried waste activated sludge with the moisture content of 4.5% and the heating value of about 4,200 kacal/kg dry solid was used in this study. With the variation of operating paramenters, such as bed temperature, superficial air velocity, and excess air ratio, temperature distributions in the incinerator and characteristics of ash drain rates and pollutant emission from the incinerator were measured. As the dried sludge had high volatile content, the maximum temperature appeared at upper region of fluidized bed surface in measured temperature distributions and the axial position of maximum temperature moved up with increase of superficial air velocity. The measured combustible contents of fly ash and bottom ash were lower than 3% and 0.4%, respectively. Thus, combustion efficiencies showed very high values of over 99.6% and were not severly affected by the variations of bed temperature and superficial air velocity. However, as the excess air ratio was increased, combustion efficiencies were decreased by the temperature drop in the freeboard region. The concentration of Co in exhausted gas was increased substantially with the increase of superficial air velocity which could reduce residence time of devolatilized gas in the freeboard. However, concentrations of SO₂and No?? were decreased slightly with the increase of superficial air velocity.

Size distribution of income in Korea has been explained by two well-known "stylized facts." Firstly, size distribution of income in Korea is relatively equitable by international standards. Along with Taiwan, Korea is one of only a few developing countries whose distribution patterrn is known to be comparable to that of advanced countries such as the United States, France, and Italy. Secondly, Kuznets's U-shaped hypothesis can be applied to korea as its size distribution of income makes a downturn curve during the 1970s and it makes a upturn curve in the 1980s. The basic purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that the "stylized facts" about the size distribution of income in Korea are only hopeful estimates, distorting the real income distribution situation in Korea. It is shown that the size distribution of income is not as equitable as claims made by the "stylized facts" and that the size distribution of income has not improved but deteriorated in the 1980s, vitiating the Kuznets's hypothesis. The organization of this paper is as follows. In section Ⅱ, the data processing and estimation method are presented. In section Ⅲ, estimation of the size distribution of income in Korea for the period of 1970-1988 is given and compared with that of privious studies. In section Ⅳ, possible causes affecting the size distribution of income in Korea are analyzed. Concluding comments are in section Ⅴ.

E. coli A_2 and G_7 occurring bacterial diarrhea of pigs were inoculated with 10^5/ml into thioglycollate medium without indicator-135C, and then Str. faecium and Str. faecalis var. liquefaciens were inoculated with 10^5/ml and 10^7/ml into previous inoculated samples of E. coli A_2 and G_7. Inoculated samples cultured at 37℃, were tested to determine changes in viable numbers of organisms and pH. The experimental results are summerized as follows: 1. In the mixed culture medium of 10^5/ml E. coli and 10^5/ml Streptococci, E. coli decreased after 8 hours from incubation, and finally decreased to 10^1/ml after 48 hours. 2. In the mixed culture medium of 10^5/ml E. coli and 10^7/ml Streptococci, E. coli drastically decreased, were not disappeared after 36 hours. 3. The pH value of the pure culture of E. coli was 5.30 and in the mixed culture of E. coli and Streptococci the pH value was 4.49-4.80 after 8 hours from incubation.

The human proteomics-based approaches, which examine the expressed proteins of a tissue or cell type, are increasingly being used. Venous occlusion is commonly employed for stimulating tissue-plasminogen activator (t-PA) and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-l) release from venous endothelial cells, and this has been regarded as a parameter of the individual fibrinolytic capacity of plasma. The present work involved a detailed investigation of the plasma proteome and fibrinolytic activity in normal subjects, with the aim of determining whether correlations exist between various parameters of the fibhnolytic system before and after venous occlusion. We analyzed fibhnolytic parameters and plasma proteome before and after 15-min periods of venous occlusion in the forearm in 10 healthy 3rd-decade volunteers. Proteome analysis was performed using two-dimensional gels. The tryptic digests of some proteins were confirmed by MALDI-TOF and the MS-Fit algorithm. The fibrinolytic response as measured by the absolute amount of t-PA after venous occlusion was increased by venous occlusion (5.5 vs 9.6 ng/㎗, p<0.05), as was PAI-l (46.8 vs 56.1 ng/㎗, p<0.05). However, two-dimensional electrophoresis finding was virtually nonspecific and inconsistent after venous occlusion in healthy male subjects. Venous occlusion does not influence plasma proteome in healthy males. Although the fibhnolytic response to venous occlusion is attributed to an increase in free tUPA antigen, this change is not correlated with plasma proteome.

Layered Na0.7[Ni0.05Mn0.95]O2 compounds have been synthesized by a sol-gel method, using glycolic acid as a chelating agent. Na0.7[Ni0.05Mn0.95]O2 precursors w ere used to prepare layered lithium manganese oxides by ion exchange for Na by Li, using LiBr in hexanol. Powder X-ray diffraction shows the layered Na0.7[Ni0.05Mn0.95]O2 has an O3 type structure, which exhibits a large reversible capacity of approximately 190 mA h g-1 in the 2.4-4.5 V range. Na0.7[Ni0.05Mn0.95]O2 powders undergo transformation to spinel during cycling.

We sequenced the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions to determined the phylogenetic relationships of the several Goodyera species in Korea and to measure the extent of their differentiation region. ITS 1 was 238 to 239 bp long while ITS 2 was 258 to 259 bp. The 5.8S coding region was 156 bp long. Sequence divergences among species, calculated by Kimura's two- parameter method, ranged from 0.0 to 5.4%. The most parsimonious tree, with a consistency index of 0.935 and a retention index of 0.937, was produced with 337 steps. Our ITS sequence results demonstrate the monophyly of Korean Goodyera and support previous morphological, geographical, and RAPD data analyses.

<P>In a phase I/IIa open-label and nonrandomized controlled clinical trial, we sought to assess the safety and neurological effects of human neural stem/progenitor cells (hNSPCs) transplanted into the injured cord after traumatic cervical spinal cord injury (SCI). Of 19 treated subjects, 17 were sensorimotor complete and 2 were motor complete and sensory incomplete. hNSPCs derived from the fetal telencephalon were grown as neurospheres and transplanted into the cord. In the control group, who did not receive cell implantation but were otherwise closely matched with the transplantation group, 15 patients with traumatic cervical SCI were included. At 1 year after cell transplantation, there was no evidence of cord damage, syrinx or tumor formation, neurological deterioration, and exacerbating neuropathic pain or spasticity. The American Spinal Injury Association Impairment Scale (AIS) grade improved in 5 of 19 transplanted patients, 2 (A → C), 1 (A → B), and 2 (B → D), whereas only one patient in the control group showed improvement (A → B). Improvements included increased motor scores, recovery of motor levels, and responses to electrophysiological studies in the transplantation group. Therefore, the transplantation of hNSPCs into cervical SCI is safe and well-tolerated and is of modest neurological benefit up to 1 year after transplants.
