Sleep apnea syndrome is characterized by loud snoring, excessive daytime somnolence and multiple attack of apnea during sleep which can cause sudden nocturnal death, cor pulmonale, hypertension, personality change and morning headache. We report a typical case of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome in a 30 year old Korean woman. She was very obese and complained loud snoring, daytime hypersomnolence. Nocturnal sleep study showed repetitive attack of apnea and fall of arterial oxygen tension and saturation. Bilateral severe tonsilar hypertrophy was thought to be the mechanism of obstruction.

A case of a female subject with a unilateral vaginal ectopic ureter associated with a single system, ipsilateral hypoplastic pelvic kidney and bicornuate uterus is reported. Although there are many reports of concomitant urinary and reproductive system malformations, a review of the literature shows these unique associations in the same patient to be extremely rare. This malformation is not limited to any combination of abnormal development of the mesonephric(wolffian) and paramesonephric(mllerian) ducts in the development of the urogenital system. Embryological aspects as well as clinical presentation, diagndstic approach and treatment applicable to this case are discussed.

Cleaving with a metal handle

Using adhesive tape to pull off monolayers of two-dimensional (2D) materials is now a well-established approach. However, the flakes tend to be micrometer scale, and the creation of multilayer stacks for device application can be challenging and time consuming. Shim et al. show that monolayers of a variety of 2D materials, including molybdenum disulfide and hexagonal boron nitride, can be cleaved from multilayers grown as 5-centimeter-diameter wafers. The multilayer is capped with a nickel layer, which can be used to pull off the entire grown stack. The bottom of the stack is again capped with nickel, and a second round of cleaving leaves the monolayer on the bottom nickel layer. The monolayers could be transferred to other surfaces, which allowed the authors to make field-effect transistors with high charge-carrier mobilities.

Science, this issue p. 665

Although flakes of two-dimensional (2D) heterostructures at the micrometer scale can be formed with adhesive-tape exfoliation methods, isolation of 2D flakes into monolayers is extremely time consuming because it is a trial-and-error process. Controlling the number of 2D layers through direct growth also presents difficulty because of the high nucleation barrier on 2D materials. We demonstrate a layer-resolved 2D material splitting technique that permits high-throughput production of multiple monolayers of wafer-scale (5-centimeter diameter) 2D materials by splitting single stacks of thick 2D materials grown on a single wafer. Wafer-scale uniformity of hexagonal boron nitride, tungsten disulfide, tungsten diselenide, molybdenum disulfide, and molybdenum diselenide monolayers was verified by photoluminescence response and by substantial retention of electronic conductivity. We fabricated wafer-scale van der Waals heterostructures, including field-effect transistors, with single-atom thickness resolution.

Confucian Moral Ethics and Contemporary Journalism Practices
Hoon Shim 한국언론학회 2019 Asian Communication Research Vol.16 No.2
This article investigates the way in which journalism could regain people’s trust in the age of media distrust by establishing a harmonious balance between moral rights and moral duty to protect and nurture respect for humanity. This essay first introduces the life of Confucius, the most highly revered sage in East Asia. It describes the supreme virtue of his spirit, ren (仁)- benevolence-and then articulates the necessity and validity of his philosophy in the field of journalism ethics. The researcher proposes several workable journalistic standards based on three practical principles of ren, the love of learning (haoxue : 好學), the Doctrine of the Mean (zhongyong : 中庸), and self-reflection (zixing : 自省) all of which could help journalists strengthen their sense of duty to revere the sacredness of human life.
Electrical spin injection in modulation-doped GaAs from an in situ grown Fe/MgO layer
Shim, Seong Hoon,Kim, Hyung-jun,Koo, Hyun Cheol,Lee, Yun-Hi,Chang, Joonyeon American Institute of Physics 2015 APPLIED PHYSICS LETTERS Vol.107 No.10

We study spin accumulation in n-doped GaAs that were electrically injected from Fe via MgO using three-terminal Hanle measurement. The Fe/MgO/GaAs structures were prepared in a cluster molecular beam epitaxy that did not require the breaking of the vacuum. We found the crystal orientation relationship of epitaxial structures Fe[100]//MgO[110]//GaAs[110] without evident defects at the interface. Control of depletion width and interface resistance by means of modulation doping improves spin injection, leading to enhanced spin voltage (Delta V) of 6.3mV at 10K and 0.8mV even at 400 K. The extracted spin lifetime and spin diffusion length of GaAs are 220 ps and 0.77 mu m, respectively, at 200 K. MgO tunnel barrier grown in situ with modulation doping at the interface appears to be promising for spin injection into GaAs. (C) 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

Background: Postpartum depression (PPD) can negatively affect infant well-being and child development. Although the frequency and risk factors of PPD symptoms might vary depending on the country and culture, there is limited research on these risk factors among Korean women. This study aimed to elucidate the potential risk factors of PPD throughout pregnancy to help improve PPD screening and prevention in Korean women. Methods: The pregnant women at 12 gestational weeks (GW) were enrolled from two obstetric specialized hospitals from March 2013 to November 2017. A questionnaire survey was administered at 12 GW, 24 GW, 36 GW, and 4 weeks postpartum. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, and PPD was defined as a score of ≥ 10. Results: PPD was prevalent in 16.3% (410/2,512) of the participants. Depressive feeling at 12 GW and postpartum factors of stress, relationship with children, depressive feeling, fear, sadness, and neonatal intensive care unit admission of baby were significantly associated with a higher risk of PPD. Meanwhile, high postpartum quality of life and marital satisfaction at postpartum period were significantly associated with a lower risk of PPD. We developed a model for predicting PPD using factors as mentioned above and it had an area under the curve of 0.871. Conclusion: Depressive feeling at 12 GW and postpartum stress, fear, sadness, relationship with children, low quality of life, and low marital satisfaction increased the risk of PPD. A risk model that comprises significant factors can effectively predict PPD and can be helpful for its prevention and appropriate treatment.
Anisotropic magnetoresistance of an epitaxial Fe stripe grown on MgO/GaAs.
Shim, Seong Hoon,Kim, Kyung-Ho,Kim, Hyung-Jun,Lee, Yun-Hi,Chang, Joonyeon American Scientific Publishers 2013 Journal of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Vol.13 No.9

The anisotropic magnetoresistance of a [100] oriented Fe stripe grown on MgO/GaAs was investigated in order to elucidate the magnetization switching of patterned Fe. A 15 nm thick Fe film was epitaxially grown on MgO/GaAs layers using molecular beam epitaxy and a 50 microm x 4 microm shaped Fe stripe was patterned along its magnetic easy axis of [100]. Negative (positive) resistance peaks appear at room (low) temperature in magnetoresistance measurement. A reversal in sign of the peak was evidently observed with decreasing temperature. Such a reversal of resistance peak is caused by the competition between Lorentz force (ordinary) and spin-orbit (extraordinary) dominated scattering processes in a magnetic domain, which is significantly affected by temperature.

The intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) procedure has recently been utilized to produce transgenic animals and may serve as an alternative to the conventional pronuclear microinjection in species such as pigs whose ooplasm is opaque and pronuclei are often invisible. In this study, the effects of sperm membrane disruption and electrical activation of oocytes on in vitro development and expression of transgene green fluorescent protein (GFP) in ICSI embryos were tested to refine this recently developed procedure. Prior to ICSI, sperm heads were treated with Triton X-100+NaCl or Triton X-100+NaCl+NaOH, to disrupt membrane to be permeable to exogenous DNA, and incubated with linearized pEGFP-N1 vector. To induce activation of oocytes, a single DC pulse of 1.3 kV/cm was applied to oocytes for $30{\mu}sec$. After ICSI was performed with the aid of a micromanipulator, in vitro development of embryos and GFP expression were monitored. The chemical treatment to disrupt sperm membrane did not affect the developmental competence of embryos. 40 to 60% of oocytes were cleaved after injection of sperm heads with disrupted membrane, whereas 48.6% (34/70) were cleaved without chemical treatment. Regardless of electrical stimulation to induce activation, oocytes were cleaved after ICSI, reflecting that, despite sperm membrane disruption, the perinuclear soluble sperm factor known to mediate oocyte activation remained intact. After development to the 4-cell stage, 11.8 (2/17, Triton X-100+NaCl+NaOH) to 58.8% (10/17, Triton X-100+NaCl) of embryos expressed GFP. The expression of GFP beyond the stage of embryonic genome activation (4-cell stage in the pig) indicates that the exogenous DNA might have been integrated into the porcine genome. When sperm heads were co-incubated with exogenous DNA following the treatment of Triton X-100+NaCl, GFP expression was observed in high percentage (58.8%) of embryos, suggesting that transgenic pigs may efficiently be produced using ICSI.
