        Suggestion for an Innovative Way of Attracting EFL CollegeLevel Students in Korea Using Transmedia Storytelling

        The purpose of the paper is to suggest an innovative way of attracting EFL collegelevel students, especially low-intermediate ones, in Korea. It is shocking that most low-intermediate students tend to give up English language learning in school. To help them restore their confidence, this study examined how to use the concept ‘transmedia storytelling’ (Jenkins, 2006, 2010). For this, three forms of media were used to teach the story Robinson Crusoe: a printed text, a movie and an animation. Each type of media had a different storyline. Fifteen students participated in the experiment, all with a TOEIC score of less than 500. For the first month, the participants read the written text and for the second month, they watched and discussed the movie and the animation. For the final month, they read the main text again. Multi-word units (MWU) are tested, especially fusion, with the main text before and after watching the movie and the animation. The second test (Q & A) was administered with the movie and the animation. Finally, the participants handed in comments about the use of transmedia storytelling. Results from the study indicate that about half became information seekers, not language learners.

      • Interfacial Energy-Controlled Top Coats for Gyroid/Cylinder Phase Transitions of Polystyrene-<i>block</i>-polydimethylsiloxane Block Copolymer Thin Films

        <P>Block copolymers (BCPs) with a high Flory-Huggins interaction parameter (chi) can form well-defined sub-10 nm periodic structures and can be used as a template for fabrication of various functional nanostructures. However, the large difference of surface energy between the blocks commonly found in high-chi BCPs makes it challenging to stabilize a useful gyroid morphology in thin film form. Here, we used an interfacial-energy-tailored top-coat on a blended film of a polystyrene-block-polydimethylsiloxane (PS-b-PDMS) BCP and a low-molecular-weight PDMS homopolymer with a hydrophilic end functional group. The top coat consisted of a random mixture of 40% hydrolyzed poly(vinyl acetate)-random-poly(vinly alcohol) (PVA-r-PVAc, PVA40) and PVAc homopolymer. At the optimized top-coat composition, gyroid nanostructures with sub-10 nm strut width were achieved down to similar to 125 nm film thickness, which is only 3 times the lattice parameter of the gyroid structure. This is in marked contrast with a mixed morphology of gyroid and cylinders obtained for other compositions of the top coat. Self-consistent field theoretic simulations were used to understand the effect of the interfacial energy between the top coat and BCP/homopolymer blends on the phase transition behavior of the BCP/homopolymer films.</P>

      • Genetic Variability in Proton Beam Induced Mutants of Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale)

        Ionizing radiations have been effective mutagen to overcome the limitation of the useful genetic resources in natural environment. This study was conducted to investigate an effect of proton beam on germination, growth patterns in the irradiated dandelion (Taraxacum officinale), and genetic variation in 12 morphological mutants induced in proton-beam irradiated dandelion. Percentage germination rate was drastically decreased over 250Gy. The lethal dose 50 (LD50) of germination was estimated between 250 Gy to 500 Gy. Significant decreases in growth patterns (plant height, number of leaf and fresh weight) were observed by increase of dose (Gy) of proton beam irradiation. According to the correlation analysis between dosage and growth factors, the orders of compactness of correlation were germination, plant height, fresh weight and number of leaf, respectively. Twelve morphological variants such as, dwarf, color, plastid, growth and leaf shape were screened at 50 to 250 Gy of the beam irradiation. As a result of ISSR analysis of the 12 variants, out of 33 bands detected overall, 8 bands were identified to be polymorphic with a rate of 24.2% at the control group. While 33 bands detected overall, 21 bands were identified to be polymorphic with a rate of 63.6% at the proton beam irradiation. The result indicates that the dandelion with proton beam treatment might be promoted variation at DNA level

        전북 지역 대학생의 친환경 농산물 구매 실태 및 인식에 대한 연구

        The principal objective of this study was to evaluate the consumption behavior and perceptions of environment-friendly agricultural products(EAPs) by university students in the Chonbuk area, Korea. Self-administered questionnaires were collected from 309 university students(male 33.0%, female 67.0%). Descriptive and comparative statistical analyses was completed using SPSS v. 12.0. The percentage of subjects who purchased EAPs was 70.9%. Of those, 87.2% had EAPs purchased by their mothers. The most purchased EAPs were vegetables, the primary reason for which was the perception of ``good for health``(73.1%). The main information source about EAPs was ``familes/freinds``. The average scores of ``attitude toward EAPs``, ``knowledge toward EAPs``, ``concern toward EAPs`` were 3.76±0.57, 2.91±0.61 and 3.29±0.43, respectively. With regards to ``attitude toward EAPs``, the scores were significantly affected by ``self-reported health status``(p<0.05). With regard to ``knowledge toward EAPs`` and ``concern toward EAPs``, the scores were significantly affected by ``supplements for health`` (p<0.05; p<0.001). For university students` right choices of EAPs, information and consumer education wthin the university curriculum on these products are necessary.

      • Genetic Variation and Grain Quality of Early Heading Rice (Oryza sativa L.) Derived from Gamma-ray Induced Mutants

        Mutation breeding is characterized by its merit, creation of new mutant characters and addition of very few traits without disturbing other characters of variety. Gamma ray is generally used to induce mutation in various crops. Heading dat is one of the key factors in the regional and seasonal adaptation of rice verity. This study was carried out to evaluate agronomic characteristics, genetic variation and grain quality of early heading rice (Oryza sativa L. cv. Dongjin 1) lines derived from gamma-ray (Co60, 300 Gy) irradiation. The average heading date of the early heading lines in M7 and M8 generation was faster than that of mother verity as 11 (line γ-2), 10 Aug (line γ-5), 6 Aug (γ-1 line), 5 Aug (γ-3 and X-1), 4 (line γ-4) days, respectively. The selected lines showed shorter culm length and ear length compared with the control. Total spikelets per panicle, percent ripened grain and thousand grain weight of the lines were also mostly shorter or lower than those of the control except total spikelets per panicle of γ-4 and γ-5 lines. When genetic variations of rps16-trnK region were evaluated by nucleotide analysis, nucleotide length of the rps16-trnK region was 664 bp in all the early-heading lines and control. Out of 5 sites of nucleotide transposition detected in the region, however, 2 sites were appeared only in the early-heading lines. Amylose content of the early heading lines ranged from 18.3% to 18.4% and the content was included in high eating quality. Protein content of the lines ranged from 6.6% to 7.0%. The content belonged to Top-rice showing under 7% of protein content. Toyo taste value of the lines ranged from 76.3% to 84.8%.

        Effects of LED Light Illumination on Germination, Growth and Anthocyanin Content of Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale)

        Dandelion has been widely utilized for medicinal and edible purposes. This research was conducted to evaluate the effect of supplemental LED (light-emitting diode) light on germination, growth characteristics and anthocyanin content of dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) seedling using LED blue (460 nm), red (660 nm, R), blue + red (B:R=6:4) and fluorescent lamp light treatment. By LED illumination to T. officinale seed germination speed was delayed, and germination rate was the highest in the fluorescent light. The growth characteristics (plant height, number of leaves, root length and fresh weight) were greatly influenced by supplemental LED light compared with control treatment, and the growth promotion was the most effective in the red LED illumination. After 60 days of red and mixed LED light treatments, anthocyanin content of dandelion plants was significantly changed. The anthocyanin content was increased by 12~19 mg/100 g under the red LED and the mixed light conditions compared with the control and the blue LED. Results indicate that illumination with red and mix LEDs, compared with other light treatments, is beneficial for promotion of growth and anthocyanin content in dandelion.

        Genetic Diversity and Relationship Analysis of Genus Taraxacum Accessions Collected in Korea

        Genus Taraxacum has been widely used as a folkloric medicine for treatment of diverse diseases. The genetic diversity and relationship among 32 accessions belonging to five Taraxacum species (T. mongolicum T. coreanum, T. coreanum var. flavescens, T. officinale and T. laevigatum) which collected from field, mountain, island and seaside of Korea were evaluated using ISSR markers. A total of 142 ISSR loci detected in the overall species were all polymorphic loci (100%) and interspecies polymorphisms obtained from Korean native and naturalized species were 98.2% and 94.5%, respectively. The genetic similarity matrix (GSM) among 32 accessions ranged from 0.025 to 0.860 with an average of 0.303. According to the clustering analysis, the Korean native species and naturalized species were divided two major clusters. In addition, the different species were divided into independent groups except for the T. coreanum and T. coreanum var. flavescens, and all the 32 accessions could be classified into 7 categories. The study findings indicate that Taraxacum accessions have a high genetic diversity and the dandelion accessions as breeding materials can be effectively utilized for the improvement of Taraxacum breeding.

        In this paper, we considered the received signal of the wideband CDMA systems using turbo code in the multipath channel environments, and analyze the performance of the system. This study is to analyze the performance for the variable system bandwidth according to the number of branches of rake receiver by passing the received signal through a rake receiver with a turbo code in Rayleigh fading channel environments. For the design of receiver in wideband CDMA systems, we presented the efficient parameters for the number of iterative decoding and the number of branches of rake receiver.
