      • Surgical Treatment for Early Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma

        Chen, Shao-Bin,Weng, Hong-Rui,Wang, Geng,Yang, Jie-Sheng,Yang, Wei-Ping,Liu, Di-Tian,Chen, Yu-Ping,Zhang, Hao Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.6

More studies are needed to clarify treatments and prognosis of early esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). This retrospective study was designed to review the outcome of surgical treatment for early ESCC, evaluate the results of a left thoracotomy for selected patients with early ESCC, and identify factors affecting lymph node metastases and survival. The clinicopathological data of 228 patients with early ESCC who underwent transthoracic esophagectomy with lymphadenectomy without preoperative adjuvant treatment were reviewed. The ${\chi}^2$ test or Fisher's exact test were used to detect factors related to lymph node metastasis. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify prognostic factors. There were 152 males and 76 females with a median age of 55 years. Two hundred and eight patients underwent a left thoracotomy, and the remaining 20 patients with lymph nodes in the upper mediastinum more than 5 mm in short-axis diameter by computed tomography scan underwent a right thoracotomy. No lymph node metastasis was found in the 18 patients with carcinoma in situ, while lymph node metastases were detected in 1.6% (1/62) of patients with mucosal tumours and 18.2% (27/148) of patients with submucosal tumours. Only 7 patients showed upper mediastinal lymph node metastases in the follow-up. The 5- and 10-year overall survival rates were 81.4% and 70.1%, respectively. Only histologic grade (P<0.001) and pT category (P=0.001) significantly correlated with the presence of lymph node metastases. In multivariate analysis, only histologic grade (P=0.026) and pT category (P=0.008) were independent prognostic factors. A left thoracotomy is acceptable for selected patients with early ESCC. Histologic grade and pT category affected the presence of lymph node metastases and were independent prognostic factors for early ESCC.

The Effect of Carbon Nanomaterials on Senescence of Cut Flowers in Carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus L.)

        Di Zhang,Xiaotong Chen,Jiangyuan Sheng,Yafei Zhang,Xiaohui Shen,Li Ren 한국원예학회 2021 원예과학기술지 Vol.39 No.3

Carbon nanomaterials (CNMs) have remarkable chemical, physical, electrical, and structural properties and favorable biocompatibility. This study used carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus L.) cut flowers as a model to evaluate the protective effects of 3 kinds of CNMs (single-walled carbon nanotubes [SWCNT], graphene quantum dots [GQD], and fullerenes [C60]) on the antioxidant activity and senescence of plant cells. We found that 1 mg·L-1 C60 and 25 mg·L-1 GQD extended the vase life (VL) of carnation by approximately 10%. SWCNT cannot be absorbed and transported by plant vascular tissue, and higher concentrations of SWCNT can block vascular tissue, leading to decreased VL. Physiological tests have shown that the The malondialdehyde (MDA) and hydroxyl radical (OH·) levels significantly decreased after the GQD and C60 treatments, and the main factors that cause cell damage changed from H₂O₂ to OH·. The in vitro Fenton reaction and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging assay indicated that both C60 and GQD may inhibit OH· generation by approximately 10% to 15%, and GQD had higher DPPH free radical scavenging activity. Accordingly, a suitable concentration of C60 and GQD can influence reactive oxygen species metabolism and downstream biological events, including the cell redox state, the antioxidant system, and membrane lipid peroxidation, effectively delaying senescence and abscission of plant tissue.

Probing Insulator-quantum Hall Transitions by Current Heating

        Kuang Yao Chen,N. Aoki,Y. Ochiai,K. A. Cheng,Li-Hung Lin,C. F. Huang,Yu-Ru Li,Yen Shung Tseng,Chun-Kai Yang,Po-Tsun Lin,Jau-Yang Wu,Sheng-Di Lin,C.-T. Liang 한국물리학회 2009 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.55 No.1

We report a magneto-transport study on the two-dimensional electron system (2DES) in an Al- GaAs/GaAs heterostructure. The direct insulator to quantum Hall conductor transition is observed at low temperatures by increasing the magnetic field B perpendicular to the 2DES. We can also observe the transition by varying the current I and find a relation Te~Ia between electron effective temperature Te and current. Here, a denotes the exponent for the power law. The exponent a, however, can have different values on the two sides of the transition point, which indicates different inelastic scattering mechanisms in the low-field insulator and in the quantum Hall conductor. Kuang Yao Chen,Chun-Kai Yang,N. Aoki,Y. Ochiai,Y. Ujiie,K. A. Cheng,Li-Hung Lin,C. F. Huang,Yu-Ru Li,Yen Shung Tseng,Po-Tsun Lin,Jau-Yang Wu,Sheng-Di Lin,C.-T. Liang 한국물리학회 2009 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.55 No.1

Hybrid ferromagnet/semiconductor systems have been the focus of considerable attention because of the transport properties of two-dimensional electron systems and their potential applications to magnetic storage and sensing devices. We use the weak localization effect to probe the dephasing mechanism at low temperatures. In our study, the zero-temperature phase-relaxation rate can be enhanced in a hybrid ferromagnet/semiconductor system, which may be due to the inhomogeneous magnetic field emanating from the Ni film. The result may improve understanding of the issue of zero-temperature dephasing in disordered systems. Analysis of differentially expressed proteins between the spinetoram-susceptible and -resistant strains of Plutella xylostella (L.)

        Fei Yin,Qing Sheng Lin,Xia Feng,Huan-yu Chen,Zhen-yu Li,Zhen-di Hu 한국응용곤충학회 2017 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.20 No.1

Plutella xylostella (L.), aworldwide vegetable pest, has developed resistance to spinetoram, whichwas previously effective for the control of P. xylostella (L.). The insecticidal resistance mechanismis essential to develop effective resistance management strategies. To explore the spinetoram resistance mechanism, a comparative proteomics approach was used to investigate the proteomic differences between the spinetoram-susceptible strain (SS) and spinetoram-resistant strain (RS) of P. xylostella (L.). Approximately 280 protein spotswere detected on each SDSPAGE gel. Of these, 19 proteinswere successfully identified byMALDI-TOF-MS.·Therewere 6 significantly downregulated spots and 13 up-regulated spots in RS, which showed significantly difference compared to that in SS. Based on the gene ontology(GO) system and KEGG database, the 19 identified proteins were classified into 6 groups includingmetabolisms, signal transduction, chaperones, transcriptional, protein synthesis, structural protein. Meanwhile, the expression profiles of 5 resistant related protein were further analysed by qRT-PCR. The results showed that 60S acidic ribosomal protein P2, glutathione S-transferase isozyme 3 and glutathione Stransferase deltawere significantly up-regulated,while phosphoglyceratemutase and receptor for activated protein kinase C homolog were significantly down-regulated. The expression tendency of mRNA was in accordance with which of protein. This study provided evidences that spinetoram induces proteomic changes in P. xylostella (L.), and it is contributed to help us understand the resistance mechanism of P. xylostella (L.) to spinetoram.

Baicalin attenuates adriamycin-induced nephrotic syndrome by regulating fibrosis procession and inflammatory reaction

        Tan Ning,Sun Chen-Xia,Zhu Hui-Jun,Li De-Yu,Huang Sheng-Guang,He Shou-Di 한국유전학회 2021 Genes & Genomics Vol.43 No.9

Background Baicalin has anti-infammatory, antibacterial, blood platelet aggregation-inhibiting, free oxygen radical-clearing, and endotoxin-decreasing properties. However, its molecular mechanism involved in the treatment of Adriamycin-induced nephrotic syndrome (NS) is still unclear. Objective This study aimed to explore the efects of baicalin on Adriamycin-induced nephrotic syndrome (NS) and to characterize the genes involved in this progression. Methods We established Adriamycin-induced NS model in 32 rats and used six rats in Sham group. Urinary total protein content and creatinine serum were assessed as physiological indicators. H&E staining was used to observe the pathological changes. We determined gene expression profles using transcriptome sequencing in the rat kidney tissues from Sham, Adriamycin, and Adriamycin+baicalin groups. KEGG was carried out to analyze the enriched pathways of diferentially expressed genes among these groups. Results Baicalin treatment relieved renal injury in NS rats. Expression of 363 genes was signifcantly diferent between the Adriamycin and Adriamycin+baicalin M groups. Most of the diferentially expressed genes were enriched in pathways involved in epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), fbrosis, apoptosis, and infammation. Conclusions Overall, these data suggest that Adriamycin-induced NS can be attenuated by baicalin through the suppression of fbrosis-related genes and infammatory reactions. Baicalin is a potential drug candidate for the treatment of NS, and the identifed genes represent potential therapeutic targets.

Flavobacterium zhairuonensis sp. nov., a gliding bacterium isolated from marine sediment of the East China Sea

        Sanjit Chandra Debnath,Ahmed Mohammed Abdo Miyah,Can Chen,Huan Sheng,Xue-Wei Xu,Yue-Hong Wu,Dao-Qiong Zheng,Jin-Zhong Xu,Ya-Nan Di,Pin-Mei Wang,Li Shen 한국미생물학회 2019 The journal of microbiology Vol.57 No.12

A yellow pigmented, Gram-stain-negative, aerobic bacterium designated A5.7T was studied to evaluate the taxonomic position following the modern polyphasic approach. The strain was isolated from sediments near Zhairuo Island, which is situated in the East China Sea. Cells were non-spore forming rods without flagella but showed motility by gliding. Growth was observed at 15–35°C (optimum 28°C), pH 6.0–9.0 (optimum pH 6.5) and 0–2% (w/v) NaCl (optimum 0–0.5%) in LB broth. The major respiratory quinone of A5.7T was menaquinone 6. The major polar lipid of A5.7T was phosphatidylethanolamine and the predominant fatty acids (> 5%) were iso-C15:0, iso-C17:0 3-OH, C15:1 ω6c, iso-C15:0 3-OH, iso-C15:1 G, summed feature 3 (C16:1 ω7c and/or C16:1 ω6c) and summed feature 9 (iso-C17:1 ω9c and/or C16:0 10-methyl). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the isolate belongs to the genus Flavobacterium and shares the highest sequence similarities with Flavobacterium sharifuzzamanii A7.6T (98.5%), Flavobacterium tistrianum GB 56.1T (98.3%), Flavobacterium nitrogenifigens NXU-44T (97.8%), Flavobacterium anhuiense D3T (97.6%), Flavobacterium ginsenosidimutans THG 01T (97.6%), and Flavobacterium foetidum CJ42T (97.6%). Digital DNA-DNA hybridization and average nucleotide identity values between the strain and its closest phylogenetic neighbors showed the ranges from 19.6 to 34.1% and 73.7 to 87.9%, respectively. Therefore, based on polyphasic characteristics, strain A5.7T represents a novel species of the genus Flavobacterium for which the name Flavobacterium zhairuonensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is A5.7T (= KCTC 62406T = MCCC 1K03494T).

Parkinson’s Disease with Fatigue: Clinical Characteristics and Potential Mechanisms Relevant to α-Synuclein Oligomer

        Li-Jun Zuo,Shu-Yang Yu,Fang Wang,Yanghui Xia,Ying-Shan Piao,Yang Du,Teng-Hong Lian,Rui-Dan Wang,Qiu-Jin Yu,Ya-Jie Wang,Xiao-Min Wang,Piu Chan,Sheng-Di Chen,Yongjun Wang,Wei Zhang 대한신경과학회 2016 Journal of Clinical Neurology Vol.12 No.2

Background and Purpose The aim of this study was to identify the clinical characteristics and potential mechanisms relevant to pathological proteins in Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients who experience fatigue. Methods PD patients (n=102) were evaluated using a fatigue severity scale and scales for motor and nonmotor symptoms. The levels of three pathological proteins—α-synuclein oligomer, β-amyloid (Aβ)1-42, and tau—were measured in 102 cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples from these PD patients. Linear regression analyses were performed between fatigue score and the CSF levels of the above-listed pathological proteins in PD patients. Results The frequency of fatigue in the PD patients was 62.75%. The fatigue group had worse motor symptoms and anxiety, depression, and autonomic dysfunction. The CSF level of α-synuclein oligomer was higher and that of Aβ1-42 was lower in the fatigue group than in the non-fatigue group. In multiple linear regression analyses, fatigue severity was significantly and positively correlated with the α-synuclein oligomer level in the CSF of PD patients, after adjusting for confounders. Conclusions PD patients experience a high frequency of fatigue. PD patients with fatigue have worse motor and part nonmotor symptoms. Fatigue in PD patients is associated with an increased α-synuclein oligomer level in the CSF
