        Baduk (the Game of Go) Improved Cognitive Function and Brain Activity in Children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

        Objective-Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms are associated with the deficit in executive functions. Playing Go involves many aspect of cognitive function and we hypothesized that it would be effective for children with ADHD. Methods-Seventeen drug naïve children with ADHD and seventeen age and sex matched comparison subjects were participated. Participants played Go under the instructor’s education for 2 hours/day, 5 days/week. Before and at the end of Go period, clinical symptoms, cognitive functions, and brain EEG were assessed with Dupaul’s ADHD scale (ARS), Child depression inventory (CDI), digit span, the Children’s Color Trails Test (CCTT), and 8-channel QEEG system (LXE3208, Laxtha Inc., Daejeon, Korea). Results-There were significant improvements of ARS total score (z=2.93, p<0.01) and inattentive score (z=2.94, p<0.01) in children with ADHD. However, there was no significant change in hyperactivity score (z=1.33, p=0.18). There were improvement of digit total score (z=2.60, p<0.01; z=2.06, p=0.03), digit forward score (z=2.21, p=0.02; z=2.02, p=0.04) in both ADHD and healthy comparisons. In addition, ADHD children showed decreased time of CCTT-2 (z=2.21, p=0.03). The change of theta/beta right of prefrontal cortex during 16 weeks was greater in children with ADHD than in healthy comparisons (F=4.45, p=0.04). The change of right theta/ beta in prefrontal cortex has a positive correlation with ARS-inattention score in children with ADHD (r=0.44, p=0.03). Conclusion-We suggest that playing Go would be effective for children with ADHD by activating hypoarousal prefrontal function and enhancing executive function.

        Changes in Brain Electrical Activity According to Post-traumatic Stress Symptoms in Survivors of the Sewol Ferry Disaster: A 1-year Longitudinal Study

        Objective: The pathology of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with changes in brain structure and function, especially in the amygdala, medial prefrontal cortex, hippocampus, and insula. Survivors of tragic accidents often experience psychological stress and develop post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS), regardless of the diagnosis of PTSD. This study aimed to evaluate electroencephalographic changes according to PTSS in victims of a single traumatic event. Methods: This study enrolled 60 survivors of the Sewol ferry disaster that occurred in 2014 from Danwon High School and collected electroencephalographic data through 19 channels twice for each person in 2014 and 2015 (mean 451.88 [standard deviation 25.77] days of follow-up). PTSS was assessed using the PTSD Checklist-Civilian Version (PCL-C) and the participants were divided into two groups according to the differences in PCL-C scores between 2014 and 2015. Electroencephalographic data were converted to three-dimensional data to perform low-resolution electrical tomographic analysis. Results: Significant electroencephalographic changes over time were observed. The group of participants with worsened PCL-C score showed an increased change of delta slow waves in Brodmann areas 13 and 44, with the largest difference in the insula region, compared to those with improved PCL-C scores. Conclusion: Our findings suggests that the electrophysiological changes in the insula are associated with PTSS changes.

        총설 : 한국의 야생화에서 분리한 효모의 종 다양성과 생리기능성

        우리나라 야생화들의 효모 종 다양성을 확립하고 이들을 고부가가치의 건강산업에 응용하기 위한 자료를 얻고자 한국의 제주도, 울릉도, 욕지도와 선유도 등 4개의 섬지역 산들과 계족산, 오서산, 백암산과 덕유산 등 4개의 내륙지역산에서 개화한 야생화들을 2012년에서 2014년 사이에 수집하여 효모 134종 289균주를 분리 동정하였다. 분리한 289균주 중에서 Cryptococcus속 균주들이 가장 많이 분리되었고 Cryptococcus aureus를 포함하는 23균주들이 섬과 내륙 산지역에서 공통적으로 분리 동정되었다. 또한 단일 균주로는 Metschnikowia reukaufii가 전체 균주 중 10.3%인 30균주로 가장 많이 분리되었다. 분리한 균주들을 yeast peptone dextrose (YPD) 배지에서 24시간 배양하여 각각의 배양상등액과 무세포추출물을 제조한 후 이들의 주요 생리기능성을 측정한 결과, Candida sp. 78-J-2의 배양상등액이 22.5%의 항산화활성, Metschnikowia reukaufii SY44-6의 배양상등액이 49.6%의 항통풍성 xanthine oxidase 저해활성과 38.4%의 미백성 tyrosinase 저해활성을 보였다. This study focused on isolation of wild yeasts from natural flowers and elucidation of yeast diversity. Wild yeasts were isolated from various flowers collected from mountains on the islands including Jejudo, Ulleungdo, Yokjido, and Seonyudo as well as inlands including Gyejoksan, Oseosan, Beakamsan, and Deogyusan in Korea. Isolated yeasts were identified by comparison of nucleotide sequences for polymerrase chain reaction-amplified D1/D2 region of 26S rDNA or internal transcribed spacer 1 and 2 including 5.8S rDNA using BLAST. 289 strains belonging to 134 yeast species were isolated. Cryptococcus genus strains were the most frequently isolated species among the identified yeasts. Metschnikowia reukaufii was also frequently isolated. Twenty three species including Cryptococcus aureus were overlapped between those of mountains on islands and inland. Physiological functionalities such as antioxidant activity, xanthine oxidase inhibitory activity, and tyrosinase inhibitory activity for the 289 identified yeast strains were investigated using their supernatant and cell-free extracts. The supernatants of Candida sp. 78-J-2 and Metschnikowia reukaufii SY44-6 showed antioxidant activity of 22.5%, and anti-gout xanthine oxidase inhibitory activity of 49.6%, respectively.

        Monolithic Hybridization of Diverse Carbon Nanotubes with Controlled Structures and Three Dimensional Graphene Foams for Supercapacitor Applications

        <P>Diverse carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with controlled structures and graphene hybrid nanostructures were synthesized for supercapacitor electrode applications. Three-dimensional multilayer graphene foams were synthesized via thermal chemical vapor deposition (TCVD). The diameter and density of the synthesized CNTs were controlled through the use of two different CVD systems in addition to adjusting the thickness of the Fe catalyst used in the production of these nanomaterials. We thereby fabricated single-walled CNTs/graphene, multi-walled CNTs/graphene, and vertically aligned CNTs/graphene hybrid nanostructures, which was confirmed via scanning electron microscopy and resonant Raman spectroscopy. Additionally, the electrochemical properties of the CNTs/graphene hybrid nanostructures were studied by cyclic voltammetry.</P>

        초등돌봄교실을 이용하는 아동의 공감을 위한 집단미술치료 질적 사례 연구

        본 연구의 목적은 초등돌봄교실을 이용하는 아동이 공감을 위한 집단미술치료에서 어떤 경험을 하고, 그 경험의 의미는 무엇 인지 살펴보는 데 있다. 이를 위해 질적 사례 연구 방법을 적용하고, B초등학교의 초등돌봄교실을 이용하고 있는 2학년 아동 6명을 연구 참여자로 선정하였다. 사례는 2019년 4월 8일부터 6월 17일까지, 주 1회 50분간 총 10회로 진행되었으 며, 사례 내 자료와 면담 자료를 수집 및 분석하여 4개의 상위주제와 11개의 하위주제가 도출되었다. 본 연구결과를 바탕으 로 한 결론은 첫째, 참여자들은 자유로운 미술작업을 통해 자신을 비언어적이고 비공격적인 방식으로 표현하며, 서로의 표현 에 관심을 갖는 경험을 하였다. 둘째, 참여자들은 서로의 작품에서 공통점을 찾아내며 공감적 표현을 하게 되었고, 이를 바탕 으로 서로를 이해하기 시작하였다. 셋째, 참여자들은 미술작업을 통해 서로의 경험을 자신의 일처럼 느끼는 경험을 하였으며, 이는 서로에 대한 배려행동으로 이어졌다. 넷째, 참여자들은 집단 미술작업을 통해 하나의 목표를 가지고 소통하며 작업하였 으며, 이를 통해 공감적 의사소통을 기반으로 한 긍정적 상호작용을 경험하였다 The purpose of this study was to identify the experience that students attending daycare class experience through a group art therapy on empathy and to examine the meaning of their experience. For this purpose, a qualitative case study was conducted. The participants were 6 elementary students attending daycare class at school B, ten sessions of group art therapy were conducted once a week for 50 minutes from April 8th to June 17th of 2019. The results from the group art therapy were as following: First, participants had a chance to express themselves freely through non-verbal art processes free of aggression, to show interest in expression of each other. Second, as participants found similarities in each others’ art pieces, they expressed empathy naturally, and this expression developed into an understanding of each other. Third, through art, participants had a chance to feel other people’s experience as theirs and share feelings. Through this, participants were able to act in consideration of each other. Fourth, when the participants worked together for a goal, they were able to show positive interaction through empathic communication

      • Identical twin with discordant classification of pituitary adenoma, and different GNAS gene sequence

        The majority of pituitary adenomas are sporadic tumors with recognized genetic mutations seldom being found. And familial pituitary tumors account for about 5%, carrying germline mutations in predisposition genes, including MEN1, PRKAR1A, and AIP. But, about 85% of familial pituitary adenoma kindred have unknown genetic cause. Meanwhile, the concordant occurrence of pituitary adenoma in identical twins is extremely rare. This case which report different subtypes of pituitary adenoma occurred in identical twins could contribute to elucidate the tumorogenesis of pituitary adenoma. A 26-year-old woman visited hospital with amenorrhea for 1.5 years. Her initial serum prolactin level was 141.0 ng/mL. Sella magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a 0.6 cm sized right pituitary adenoma. After transsphenoidal surgery, serum prolactin level normalized and her menstruation returned regularly. Her twin sister had acromegalic features, such as enlarged face, hands and feet. Basal serum insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) levelwas 770.9 ng/mL. Sella MRI showed a 1.5 cm sized left pituitary adenoma.. Serum growth hormone (GH) level was not suppressed by 75g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). After tumor removal, serum GH level was suppressed by OGTT. Their pathologic results consisted with prolactinoma andgrowth hormone secreting tumor, respectively. In evaluating family history, their father’s brother had pituitary adenoma. Short tandem repeat (STR)analysis results consisted with identical twins. Because of their family history and early onset of pituitary adenoma, genetic test was done for determining familial pituitary adenoma. And, genetic alterations in sporadic pituitary tumor also evaluated, because different subtypes of pituitary tumor was occurred in identical twins. We found GNAS gene mutation only in acromegaly patient. But the primary oncogenic potential of GNAS mutations remains a matter of debate. Thus, a better understanding of the causative genes and the pathogenic mechanisms of pituitary tumorogenesis is needed to improve the diagnosis and management of pituitary tumor patients.

      • Derivation of Neural Precursor Cells from Human Embryonic Stem Cells

        Human embryonic stem (ES) cells are derived from the inner cell mass of the preimplantation embryo. Human ES cells have the capacity to differentiate into various types of cells in the body. Human ES cells are indefinite source of cells for cell therapy in various degenerative disorders including neuronal disorders. Directed differentiation of human ES cells is a prerequisite for their clinical application. The objective of this study is to develop the culture condition for the derivation of neural precursor cells from human ES cells. Neural precursor cells were derived from human ES cells in a stepwise culture condition. Neural precursor cells in the form of neural rosette structures developed into neurospheres when cultured in suspension. Suspension culture of neurospheres has been maintained over 4 months. Expressions of nestin, soxl, sox2, pax3 and pax6 transcripts were upregulated during differentiation into neural precursor cells by RT-PCR analysis. In contrast, expression of oct4 was dramatically downregulated in neural precursor cells. Immunocytochemical analyses of neural precursor cells demonstrated expression of nestin and SOX1. When induced to differentiate on an adhesive substrate, neuro-spheres were able to differentiate into three lineages of neural systems, including neurons, astrocytes and oligo-dendrocytes. Transcripts of sox1 and pax6 were downregulated during differentiation of neural precursor cells into neurons. In contrast, expression of map2ab was elevated in the differentiated cells, relative to those in neural precursor cells. Neurons derived from neural precursor cells expressed NCAM, Tuj1, MAP2ab, NeuN and NF200 in immunocytochemical analyses. Presence of astrocytes was confirmed by expression of GFAP immuno-cytochemically. Oligodendrocytes were also observed by positive immuno-reactivities against oligodendrocyte marker O1. Results of this study demonstrate that a stepwise culture condition is developed for the derivation of neural precursor cells from human ES cells.
