The purpose of this study is to obtain basic data on the properties of the lightweight concrete within expanded polystyrene beads for various applications in the field. Inquiring into the change of the properties as altering cement matrix mixture and the capacity mixture ratio of expanded polystyrene beads, the mixture plane of this study is set up as W/C is fixed 50%, expanded polystyrene beads is increased 10% from 0% to 80% per 1m³ and the ratio of cement:sand in the cement matrix is 1:0, 1:0.5, 1:1. The results of this study are as follow. The slump as changing the mixture ratio of expanded polystyrene beads decrease smoothly until mixture ratio 50% but decrease rapidly being in excess of 50%. The density decrease regularly as the mixture ratio of expanded polystyrene beads increase but the ratio of strength decrease. The difference of cement matrix. The strength of cement matrix having more sand mixture ratio relatively decrease rapidly as increasing the mixture ratio of expanded polystyrene beads. It is judged decreased strength phenomenon as the quantity of coherent material created in the mixture decrease rapidly.

N/A Background : Heart transplantation is a definite treatment modality of the patients with end-stage heart failure. Heart transplantation has been performed in Korea since 1992, and currently it is an established procedure for the management of terminal heart failure. The purpose of this study is to clarify the Korean status of heart transplantation. Methods : Six major heart transplantation centers' 137 cases during the period November 1992 through May 1999 are analyzed to evaluate the general demographics, underlying heart diseases, postoperative management, complications, and survival. Results : The mean age of the patients is 37 years old, and the mean follow-up period is 25 months (1 day - 80 months, median 20 months). Most common underlying disease related to heart failure is cardiomyopathy (86%). Total 16% of patients underwent cellular rejection of ISHLT (International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation) grade 3A or more within 1 year after transplantation. The most common type of clinical infection is bacterial (18%), and the most common organism is Herpes zoster virus (6.4%). Graft coronary artery disease examined by coronary angiography detected in 3.7% of recipients within 12 months after transplantation. One, 2, 3, and 5-year overall survival rates of recipients are 81% , 72%, 71%, and 62%, respectively. Conclusion : Distribution of underlying heart diseases and the frequency of graft coronary artery disease of Korean heart transplantation recipients were different from those of the western patients. Although the history of heart transplantation in Korea is relatively short, the early and long-term results are comparable with well-established centers.(Korean J Med 60:228-233, 2001)

<P>Background aims. Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) offer tremendous potential for therapeutic applications for inflammatory diseases. However, tissue-derived MSCs, such as bone marrow derived MSCs (BM-MSCs), have considerable donor variations and limited expandability. It was recently demonstrated that MSCs derived from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC-MSCs) have less pro-tumor potential and greater expandability of homogenous cell population. In this study, we investigated the anti-inflammatory effects and mechanism of iPSC-MSCs in a murine model of chemical and mechanical injury to the cornea and compared the effects with those of BM-MSCs. Methods. To create an injury, ethanol was applied to the corneal surface in mice, and the corneal epithelium was removed with a blade. Immediately after injury, mice received an intravenous injection of (i) iPSC-MSCs, (ii) BM-MSCs or (iii) vehicle. Clinical, histological and molecular assays were performed in the cornea to evaluate inflammation. Results. We found that corneal opacity was significantly reduced by iPSC-MSCs or BM-MSCs. Histological examination revealed that the swelling and inflammatory infiltration in the cornea were markedly decreased in mice treated with iPSC-MSCs or BM-MSCs. Corneal levels of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha, interleukin (IL)-1 beta and IL-6 were lower in iPSC-MSC- and BM-MSC-treated mice, compared with vehicle-treated controls. In contrast, iPSC-MSCs with a knockdown of the TNF-alpha stimulating gene (TSG)-6 did not suppress the levels of inflammatory cytokines and failed to reduce corneal opacity. Conclusions. Together these data demonstrate that iPSC-MSCs exert therapeutic effects in the cornea by reducing inflammation in part through the expression of TSG-6, and the effects are similar to those seen with BM-MSCs.</P>
Insecticidal Compound 3369 and Its Activity According to Structure Change

In the course of searching for new insecticidal compounds from soil microorganisms, compound 3369 was isolated and identified as oligomycin A, which is known as a potent inhibitor of mitochondrial ATPase. We tried to change the structure chemically in order to improve its toxicity (LD_(50) 2.5㎎/㎏ mouse) and insecticidal activity and got compound 3369SM1 and 3369N. These changed compounds showed decreased insecticidal activities and showed newly anti microbial activities. From these results, we deduced that changed sites of the compound 3369 structure may be essential for the insecticidal activity and these changed compounds may have new bioactivities.

The pepper fruit of Capsicum annuum L. is used as a food, spice, and topical medicine. Here, we investigated the effect of a methanolic C. annuum L. extract (CAE) in a mouse model of ovalbumin-induced allergic airway inflammation. Animals were treated with CAE by oral gavage before ovalbumin challenge. After ovalbumin challenge, airway responsiveness to methacholine, influx of inflammatory cells into the lung, cytokine levels in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and lung, nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) activity in lungs, and lung histopathology were assessed. Oral treatment with CAE significantly reduced the pathophysiological signs of allergic airway disease, including increased inflammatory cell recruitment to the airways, airway hyperresponsiveness, and increased levels of T-helper type 2 cytokines. Reactive oxygen species were also decreased in cells from bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. In addition, we found that administration of CAE attenuated ovalbumin-induced increases in NF-κB activity in lungs. Collectively, these results suggest that CAE may be an effective oral treatment for allergic airway inflammation by virtue of its antioxidant activity.
Insecticidal Limonoids from Melia toosendan

The fruits of Melia species in Asia are somewhat poisonous, but regarded as anthelmintic, antifeedant, antifebrile and diuretic. They are employed to treat fever, delirium, hernia and uterine illness. Recently we isolated a potent insecticidal compound against larvae of Bombyx mori from the fruits of Melia toosendan, The active principle was isolated by repeated column chromatography and recrystallization as a needle crystal. The structure was elucidated by ¹H-NMR , ^(13)C-NMR , MS and other spectroscopic data of acetylated compounds. This presentation describes isolation, purification, structure elucidation and insecticidal activity of this compound.
Comparison of Topical Application of TSG-6, Cyclosporine, and Prednisolone for Treating Dry Eye

<P>Purpose: To compare the therapeutic effects of topical tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha-stimulated gene/protein-6 (TSG-6) with those of cyclosporine and prednisolone eye drops in NOD.B10.H2(b) mice, a model for inflammation-mediated dry eye. Methods: The 12-week-old NOD.B10.H2(b) mice were topically administered recombinant TSG-6 (0.1%) 4 times a day, 0.05% cyclosporine (Restasis) twice a day, or 1% prednisolone (Pred Forte) 4 times a day for 1 week. Aqueous tear production was measured by phenol red thread test, and corneal epithelial damage was observed with lissamine green and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling staining. Conjunctival goblet cell number was evaluated with periodic acid-Schiff staining. The levels of inflammatory cytokines were analyzed in the ocular surface (cornea and conjunctiva) and intraorbital gland. The dose-dependent effects of topical TSG-6 (0.001, 0.01, and 0.1%) were tested. Results: Tear production and goblet cell density were significantly increased in all groups receiving TSG-6, cyclosporine, and prednisolone. Corneal epithelial staining was markedly reduced by TSG-6 and cyclosporine but not by prednisolone. In prednisolone-treated eyes, corneal epithelial thickness was decreased, and apoptosis of corneal epithelial cells was increased. The levels of interferon gamma and TNF-alpha in the ocular surface and intraorbital gland were significantly repressed by TSG-6 and cyclosporine, and prednisolone treatment significantly reduced the level of interferon gamma. The effects of TSG-6 on the ocular surface and tear production were dose dependent. Conclusions: Topical TSG-6 was as effective in inflammation-mediated dry eye as cyclosporine eye drops. Topical prednisolone suppressed inflammation but induced apoptosis in the corneal epithelium.</P>
