        Efficacy of a commercial live attenuated <i>Lawsonia intracellularis</i> vaccine in a large scale field trial in Korea

        <P><B>Purpose</B></P><P>Porcine proliferative enteropathy (PPE) is known as one of the most important risk factors causing economic losses in swine industry worldwide. This study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of a commercial oral attenuated <I>Lawsonia intracellularis</I> vaccine (Enterisol Ileitis) against PPE under a commercial pig farm condition in Korea.</P><P><B>Materials and Methods</B></P><P>Thirty two-day-old 672 piglets were randomly allocated into vaccinated and control groups. All piglets in the vaccinated group were inoculated with a commercial attenuated <I>L. intracellularis</I> vaccine as following the manufacturer's instruction. Body weights of all pigs in both groups were measured on the vaccination day and 6, 14, and 20 weeks post vaccination and an average daily weight gain (ADWG) was calculated. Health status was observed biweekly during the whole trial.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>The vaccinated group showed significantly higher body weight (p<0.05) and ADWG (p<0.05) than those of the control group. The vaccinated group had significantly reduced impairments in activity, growth, defecation frequency, and stool hardness (p<0.05). Additional health benefits and improved weight gain by the vaccination produced a 4.2:1 return of investment, and the higher gross margin was $4.80 per pig.</P><P><B>Conclusion</B></P><P>Our finding suggests that the <I>L. intracellularis</I> vaccine program has effects on the substantial health and economic benefits in the Korean swine industry.</P>

        The Attributable Risk of Smoking on All-Cause Mortality in Korean: A Study Using KNHANES IV-VI (2007-2015) with Mortality Data

        Background: It is not evident that the attributable risk of smoking on mortality in Korea has decreased. We investigated the impact of smoking on all-cause mortality and estimated the attributable risk of smoking in Korean adults. Methods: Those aged ≥20 years with smoking history in the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (KNHANES) 2007-2015 were enrolled. We categorized the participants into three groups as follows: never smoker, <20 pack-years (PY) smokers, and ≥20 PY smokers. We applied inverse probability weighting using propensity scores to control various confounders between the groups. All-cause mortality risks were compared between the groups using the Kaplan-Meier log-rank test. The effects of smoking-attributable risks (ARs) on mortality were also calculated. Results: A total of 50,458 participants were included. Among them, 19,334 (38.3%) were smokers and 31,124 (61.7%) were never smokers. Those with a smoking history of 20 PY or more (≥20 PY smokers), those with a smoking history of less than 20 PY (<20 PY smokers), and never smokers were 18.1%, 20.2%, and 61.7%, respectively, of the study population. Smokers had a higher risk of all-cause mortality compared to never smokers (log-rank test p<0.01). The ARs of smoking were 21.8% (95% confidence interval [CI], 5.7%-37.9%) and 9.0% (95% CI, 6.1%-12.0%) in males and females, respectively. ARs decreased from 24.2% to 19.5% in males and from 9.5% to 4.1% in females between 2007-2010 and 2011-2015. Conclusion: Our study using KNHANES IV-VI data demonstrated that smoking increased the risk of all-cause mortality in a dose-response manner and the ARs of smoking on mortality were 21.8% in males and 9.0% in females during 2007- 2015. This suggests that the ARs of smoking on mortality have decreased since around 2010.

        This study was conducted to find out the chlorine removal characteristics of waste plastic mixture by pyrolysis process with thermogravimetric analysis(TGA) and a lab-scale pyrolyzer. The material used as plastic wastes were PE (Poly-ethylene), PP (Poly-prophylene), and PVC (Poly Vinyl Chloride). Experimental procedure were composed of three steps ; 1st step: TGA of PVC, PP and PE, 2nd step: chlorine removal rate of PVC in a lab-scale pyrolyzer, 3rd step: chlorine removal rate of PVC-PE and PVC-PP mixture in a pyrolyzer. Through the results of TGA, we can estimate the basic pyrolysis characteristics of each plastic, and then we can also derive the design parameters and operating conditions of the lab-scale pyrolyzer. The results can be used as primary data for designing a system to produce RPF (Refuse Plastic Fuel), a waste incinerator and a pyrolysis/gasification process.

        Spirobifluorene 그룹을 포함하는 새로운 청색 발광 재료의 전계발광

        BTPSF와 BDTSF는 유기발광다이오드용 스파이로플루오렌 모이어티를 기반으로 하는 새로운 청색 발광 물질로 성공적으로 합성되었다. BTPSF와 BDTSF는 촉매를 사용하지 않고 Diels-Alder 반응을 통해 합성하여 고순도를 얻었다. 합성된 물질의 광발광 스펙트럼은 용액 상태에서 약 381, 407 nm, 필름 상태에서 각각 395, 434 nm의 최대 발광 파장을 나타내어 자외선과 짙은 청색 발광색을 나타냈다. 합성된 BDTSF 물질은 non-doped 소자의 EML로 적용되었으며, 전류 효율은 0.61 cd/A이다. 2,7-bis(3',6'-diphenyl-[1,1':2',1''-terphenyl]-4'-yl)-9,9'-spirobi[fluorene] (BTPSF) and 2,7-bis(1,4-diphenyltriphenylen-2-yl)-9,9'-spirobi[fluorene] (BDTSF) were successfully synthesized as novel blue-emission materials for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) based on the spirobifluorene (SBF) moiety. BTPSF and BDTSF were obtained in high purity via a Diels-Alder reaction, without the use of a catalyst. Photoluminescence spectra of the synthesized materials showed maximum emitting wavelengths of approximately 381 and 407 nm in solution and 395 and 434 nm in the film state, for BTPSF and BDTSF, respectively, indicating ultra-violet and deep blue emission colors. BDTSF was applied as an emissive layer (EML) in non-doped devices and achieved a current efficiency of 0.61 cd/A and an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 0.46%.

        플래쉬 메모리 SSD 기반 해쉬 조인 알고리즘의 성능 평가

        데이터베이스 관리 시스템의 핵심 알고리즘인 해쉬 조인은 해싱을 위한 메모리가 부족한 경우(즉, 해쉬 테이블 오버플로우) 디스크 입출력를 유발하게 된다. 하드디스크를 임시 저장공간으로 사용할 경우, 해쉬 조인의 probing 단계에서 과도한 임의 읽기로 인해 I/O 시간이 성능을 저하시키게 된다. 한편, 플래시메모리 SSD가 저장장치로 각광을 받고 있으며, 머지않아 엔터프라이즈 환경에서 하드디스크를 대체할 것으로 예상 된다. 하드디스크와 달리, 기계적인 동작 장치가 없는 플래시메모리 SSD의 경우 임의 읽기에서 빠른 성능을 보이기 때문에 해쉬 조인의 성능을 크게 향상시킬 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 플래시 메모리 SSD를 해쉬 조인을 위한 임시 저장공간으로 사용할 경우의 몇 가지 중요하고 현실적인 이슈들을 다룬다. 우선, 해쉬 조인의 I/O 패턴을 자세히 설명하고, 하드디스크에 비해 플래시메모리 SSD가 수십 배에 가까운 성능 향상을 보이는 이유를 설명한다. 다음으로, 클러스터 크기(즉, 해쉬 조인 알고리즘에서 사용하는 I/O 단위)가 성능에 미치는 영향을 제시하고 분석한다. 마지막으로, 하드디스크의 경우, DBMS의 질의 최적화기가 산출하는 비용이 실 수행시간과 편차가 클 수 있는데 반해, 플래시메모리 SSD의 경우 비용 산출을 정확히 하게 됨을 실험적으로 보인다. 결론적으로, 플래시메모리 SSD를 해쉬 조인을 위한 임시 저장공간으로 사용할 경우, 빠른 성능과 더불어 질의 최적화기의 비용 산출이 훨씬 더 신뢰할 수 있음을 보인다. Hash join is one of the core algorithms in databases management systems. If a hash join cannot complete in one-pass because the available memory is insufficient (i.e., hash table overflow), however, it may incur a few sequential writes and excessive random reads. With harddisk as the tempoary storage for hash joins, the I/O time would be dominated by slow random reads in its probing phase. Meanwhile, flash memory based SSDs (flash SSDs) are becoming popular, and we will witness in the foreseeable future that flash SSDs replace harddisks in enterprise databases. In contrast to harddisk, flash SSD without any mechanical component has fast latency in random reads, and thus it can boost hash join performance. In this paper, we investigate several important and practical issues when flash SSD is used as tempoary storage for hash join. First, we reveal the I/O patterns of hash join in detail and explain why flash SSD can outperform harddisk by more than an order of magnitude. Second, we present and analyze the impact of cluster size (i.e., I/O unit in hash join) on performance. Finally, we emperically demonstrate that, while a commerical query optimizer is error-prone in predicting the execution time with harddisk as temporary storage, it can precisely estimate the execution time with flash SSD. In summary, we show that, when used as temporary storage for hash join, flash SSD will provide more reliable cost estimation as well as fast performance.

        Phase-Redundant-Based Reliable Direct AC/AC Converter Drive for Series Hybrid Off-Highway Heavy Electric Vehicles

        <P>Hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) technology has numerous advantages over conventional vehicles, from standpoints of fuel economy, energy independence, and environmental concerns. Effective solutions for HEVs have been expanding their applications over highway vehicles, such as sedans and sport utility vehicles, into a variety of traditional vehicles. HEV systems applied to off-highway heavy-duty vehicles, which are operated by an engine, a generator, and traction motors, are investigated in this paper. This paper explores the use of a direct ac/ac converter for off-highway heavy-duty HEVs, which can directly drive traction motors from the generator with no intermediate dc conversion. In addition, a phase-redundant matrix converter structure with a backup leg and a control scheme is proposed to guarantee reliable and safe vehicle operations by providing continuous disturbance-free operations against converter faults. Fault-diagnosis techniques using line-to-line and phase voltages are presented not only to detect system malfunctions but to locate a failed switching device among 18 switching components as well. Appropriate reconfiguration structure and control actions with accurate knowledge about fault occurrence can avoid propagation of fault, which may lead to a catastrophic system failure.</P>
