The shared resource hypothesis suggests that married couples share the same en-vironmental resources, which shape their health concordance. This study tests its cross-national applicability. Cross-sectional 2012–2013 Health and Retirement Study data from China, England, Mexico, and the United States were analyzed. Heterosexual couples (age ≥60) who were married or partnered were studied (N = 20,565 pairs). Dyadic data were analyzed by multilevel models to examine the effect of self and spousal social and physical health statuses on depressive symptoms. Regression models were used to test the relationship between couples' shared resources and depressive symptom concordance. Results indicated both husbands and wives' de-pressive symptoms were associated with their own and spouses' social and health statuses. Most couple-level resources were insignificant predictors for Chinese and Mexican couples' concordance, but having more social and financial resources was associated with higher concordance among British and American couples. Self-re-ported health was the most consistent predictor in all countries. The shared resource hypothesis was more applicable to depressive symptom concordance within couples in the United States and England, but not in China and Mexico. Couple-centered intervention is suggested for clinical practice, and the spousal effect should be con-sidered in policymaking.
Piceatannol Reduces Fat Accumulation in Caenorhabditis elegans

Excess fat accumulation and abnormal metabolism are involved in numerous diseases and thus the research on identification of compounds that can regulate energy homeostasis could significantly facilitate the current effort to prevent and/or treat metabolic disorders. Piceatannol, one of the natural stilbenes, was previously found to decrease lipid accumulation of 3T3-L1 adipocytes. However, its role in fat metabolism in vivo is not known. Thus, Caenorhabditis elegans as an animal model was used in the current study to determine the effect of piceatannol on fat accumulation and its underlying mechanisms. The results showed that 50 and 100 μM piceatannol significantly reduced fat accumulation of wild-type worms grown in normal and high-glucose conditions without altering the growth rate, worm length, pumping rate, or moving speed. The current study further indicated that piceatannol decreased the expression of sbp-1 (encodes an ortholog of mammalian sterol regulatory element-binding protein) and its target gene fasn-1 (encodes an ortholog of fatty acid synthase) as well as increased the expression of hosl-1 (encodes an ortholog of hormone-sensitive lipase) in glucose-treated worms. These data suggested that piceatannol reduced fat accumulation in C. elegans by suppression of genes involved in lipid synthesis and possibly through stimulation of lipolysis. Given that piceatannol exerts similar effects in both C. elegans and 3T3-L1 cells, our finding could provide a mechanistic insight into the role of piceatannol in lipid metabolism in mammals.
Optical and structural investigation of stacked Ge quantum dots

Stacked Ge quantum dots were grown on Si(100) by ultra-high vacuum chemical vapor deposition( UHV/CVD). The morphology and the size distributions of stacked Ge dots were investigated by AFM and TEM. The in uences of the number of layers and thickness of Si spacer layers on upper Ge dots were investigated. Results show that the total density of upper Ge dots decreases with increasing of the number of layers. To obtain vertical correlated Ge dots, the thickness of Si spacer layers should be smaller than 48nm. Obvious blueshift (87meV) observed from PL spectrum under 10K demonstrates strong quantum connement in Ge dots. FWHM of Ge dots NP peak is about 46meV that indicates the narrow size distribution of stacked Ge dots grown by UHV/CVD. Finally, a photodetector using stacked Ge quantum dots as active region was demonstrated as well.
Cranberry Product Decreases Fat Accumulation in Caenorhabditis elegans
Quancai Sun,Yiren Yue,Peiyi Shen,Jeremy J. Yang,Yeonhwa Park 한국식품영양과학회 2016 Journal of medicinal food Vol.19 No.4
Cranberry phenolic compounds have been linked to many health benefits. A recent report suggested that cranberry bioactives inhibit adipogenesis in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Thus, we investigated the effects and mechanisms of the cranberry product (CP) on lipid metabolism using the Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) model. CP (0.016% and 0.08%) dose-dependently reduced overall fat accumulation in C. elegans (N2, wild type) by 43% and 74%, respectively, without affecting its pumping rates or locomotive activities. CP decreased fat accumulation in aak-2 (an ortholog of AMP-activated kinase α) and tub-1 (an ortholog of TUBBY) mutants significantly, but only minimal effects were observed in sbp-1 (an ortholog of sterol response element-binding protein-1) and nhr-49 (an ortholog of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-α) mutant strains. We further confirmed that CP downregulated sbp-1, cebp, and hosl-1 (an ortholog of hormone-sensitive lipase homolog) expression, while increasing the expression of nhr-49 in wild-type C. elegans. These results suggest that CP could effectively reduce fat accumulation in C. elegans dependent on sbp-1, cebp, and nhr-49, but not aak-2 and tub-1.

The emerging triple-phase-shift (TPS) modulation method has been successfully applied to the dual active bridge (DAB) converters, eliminating the circulating current and thus improving the efficiency. Hence the TPS-based DAB converter has been receiving greater attention in recent years. However, the interaction between the TPS-DAB converter and its LC filter may cause instable problems. This paper develops the impedance model of the TPS-DAB converter. With the developed input impedance model, the stability of the TPS-DAB converter and its LC filter is analyzed. The effects of the LC filter parameters on the stability of the TPS-DAB converter and the LC filter are clarified. Finally, the experimental results are provided for validating the impedance model and stability analysis.
Design of Direct-Current Fuzzy Controller for Mitigating Commutation Failure in HVDC System
Benfeng Gao,Kewei Yuan,Peiyi Dong,Chao Luo,Shuqiang Zhao 대한전기학회 2018 Journal of Electrical Engineering & Technology Vol.13 No.4
Commutation failures can deteriorate the availability of high-voltage direct current (HVDC) links and may lead to outage of the HVDC system. Most commutation failures are caused by voltage reduction due to ac system faults on inverter side. The commutation failure process can be divided into two stages. The first stage, from the occurrence to the clearing of faults, is called ‘Deterioration Stage’. The second stage, from the faults clearing to restoring the power system stability, is called ‘Recovery Stage’. Based on the analysis of the commutation failure process, this paper proposes a direct-current fuzzy controller including prevention and recovery controller. The prevention controller reduces the direct current to prevent Commutation failures in the ‘Deterioration Stage’ according to the variation of ac voltage. The recovery controller magnifies the direct current to speed up the recovery of power system in the ‘Recovery Stage’, based on the recovery of direct voltage. The validity of this proposed fuzzy controller is further proved by simulation with CIGRE HVDC benchmark model in PSCAD/EMTDC. The results show the commutation failures can be mitigated by the proposed direct-current fuzzy controller.
