Bittersweet Nostalgia: Objects and Animals in Thomas Hardy’s Middle Period Poetry
Nilufar Isroilova,Doniyor Keldiyoro,김연민 대한영어영문학회 2023 영어영문학연구 Vol.49 No.1
This paper aims to investigate the paradoxical dynamic of nostalgia in Thomas Hardy’s middle period poetry. Non-human entities of objects and animals in Hardy remain on the sidelines of a modernity that is fast-paced, progressive, and teleological. When Hardy constructs a world of nostalgia through the images of objects and animals, the concept of nostalgia is no longer a pathetic sentiment as conventionally considered. Instead, replete with a bittersweet sentiment, Hardy’s nostalgia creates a dynamic in which both social criticism and mourning, the bitterness and the sweetness, can exist as two sides of a coin. First, Hardy’s objects maintain the dynamic tension of nostalgia involving criticism and longing. Using the mode of satirical elegy, in itself contradictory because satire entails a negation of the present while an elegy basically pursues reconciliation with the present, Hardy, on one hand, maintains a critical distance from the social injustice and ills engendered in the course of modernization and war. On the other hand, he continually longs for what has recently been lost in civilization. Second, Hardy uses animals to construct a world of nostalgia with a paradoxical sense of the sublime that entails the bittersweet. When encountering animals, Hardy’s speakers are exposed to an identity crisis. They hermeneutically feel pleasure when they clearly understand their circumstances even with their pessimistic views. At the same time, they perceives their own alienation from the world, resulting from the loss of the great traditions in the modern context.
우즈베키스탄에서의 국제관광 동력: 그래비티 모델 실증분석
( Nilufar Safarova ) 대한관광경영학회 2016 觀光硏究 Vol.31 No.8
This paper using gravity model identifies determinants of the growth of international tourist arrivals in Uzbekistan. It applies the gravity model to a dataset comprising bilateral tourism flows with the total sample of 148 countries spanning from 2006 to 2014. The results proved high significance of traditional determinants (income of origin country, distance) of international tourism in Uzbekistan. Furthermore, our results indicate that strengthening diplomatic and consulate services support international tourism promotion and increase of tourist arrivals. Not merely important finding shows, that imposing visa restrictions reduces tourist arrivals by at least 80%. The same negative effect is valid for alternative regression models that account for presence of zero observations.
Uzbek Study-Abroad Students’ Motivation, Intercultural Competence, and L2 Korean Proficiency
최문홍,Nilufar, Djabbarova 명지대학교(서울캠퍼스) 인문과학연구소 2023 인문과학연구논총 Vol.44 No.1
This study investigated Uzbek study-abroad students’ motivation and intercultural competence in relation to their achievement in L2 Korean. A total of 57 Uzbek adult learners of L2 Korean participated in the study. Their motivational intensity and intercultural competence were measured through previously attested questionnaires, and their L2 proficiency was assessed through oral interviews administered by two experienced Korean language teachers. The results revealed that intercultural competence was a significant predictor of L2 proficiency while motivation did not contribute much to L2 development. Those with higher intercultural competence were likely to achieve more in all linguistic domains but pronunciation than those with lower competence. Contrary to popular belief, interest in Korean culture and positive attitudes toward Koreans appeared not to link directly with Uzbek students’ ability to learn Korean.

In many cases, obesity is associated with metabolic disorders. Recently, natural compounds that may be beneficial for improving obesity have received increasing attention. Bitter melon has received attention as a diabetes treatment. NAD+ -dependent deacetylase (Sirtuin 1, SIRT1) has emerged as a novel therapeutic target for metabolic diseases. In this study, ethanol extract of bitter melon (BME) suppressed adipocyte differentiation and significantly increased the expression of SIRT1 in fully differentiated 3T3-L1 cells. Moreover, it enhanced the activation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). In high-fat diet (HFD)-fed induced-obesity mice, BME suppressed HFD-induced increases in body weight and white adipose tissue (WAT) weight. BME also increased the expression of SIRT1 and suppressed peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor and sterol regulatory element binding protein 1 expressions of WAT from HFD-fed mice. These findings suggest that BME prevents obesity by activating the SIRT1 and AMPK pathway and that it may be a useful dietary supplement for preventing obesity.
A New Document on Smallpox Vaccination
Zahra Tayarani-Najaran,Nilufar Tayarani-Najaran,Amirhossein Sahebkar,Seyed Ahmad Emami 사단법인약침학회 2016 Journal of Acupuncture & Meridian Studies Vol.9 No.6
Modern medicine owes much to the invaluable heritage of the practices of past generations and their achievements that have now become medical rules. In the case of vaccination, there is evidence that the nomads of Baluchistan (Southeast Iran) demonstrated natural immunization against cowpox, a practice that was later introduced to the medical community by Edward Jenner. Although the discoveries of scientists cannot be ignored, they are certainly based on the traditional and indigenous experiences that have been transferred from generation to generation until reaching us.

This research investigates the enhancement of inclusiveness in Uzbekistan’s online education system. It examines, through surveys and statistical analyses, how various factors influence the usage and satisfaction levels of online educational services among Uzbek internet users. Key findings include the negligible impact of internet connectivity on service usage and satisfaction, higher satisfaction levels among individuals with prior digital education experience, and notable differences in service consumption and satisfaction across gender and language groups. The study underscores the necessity for comprehensive policies that address not just technological aspects, but also sociocultural capacities. It highlights the importance of creating content markets tailored to women and Uzbek-only speakers and suggests implementing specialized digital training programs to elevate user satisfaction with online educational services.
Acetoacetate protects neuronal cells from oxidative glutamate toxicity

Glutamate cytotoxicity contributes to neuronal degeneration in many central nervous system (CNS) diseases, such as epilepsy and ischemia. We previously reported that a high-fat and low-carbohydrate diet, the ketogenic diet (KD), protects against kainic acid-induced hippocampal cell death in mice. We hypothesized based on these findings that ketosis resulting from KD might inhibit glutamate cytotoxicity, resulting in inhibition of hippocampal neuronal cell death. Therefore, we investigated the role of ketone bodies [acetoacetate (AA) and β-hydroxybutyrate (β-OHB)] both in a mouse hippocampal cell line (HT22) and in rat primary hippocampal neurons. As a result, we found that pretreatment with 5 mM lithium AA and 4 mM Na β-OHB protected the HT22 hippocampal cell line and primary hippocampal neuronal culture against 5 mM glutamate toxicity and that up to 2 hr of pretreatment with 5 mM AA had a protective effect against 5 mM glutamate toxicity in the HT22 cell line. Pretreatment with 5 mM AA decreased ROS production of HT22 cell line at 2 and 8 hr exposure of glutamate, and it decreased the appearance of annexin V-positive HT22 cells, which are indicative of an early stage of apoptosis, and propidium iodide-positive HT22 cells, which are indicative of necrosis. © 2006 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
