      • Vitamin D status after colorectal cancer diagnosis and patient survival according to immune response to tumour

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P><B>Background</B></P> <P>High-level plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] has been associated with lower colorectal cancer incidence and mortality. Considering evidence indicating immunomodulatory effects of vitamin D, we hypothesised that survival benefits from high systemic vitamin D level might be stronger for colorectal carcinoma with lower immune response to tumour.</P> <P><B>Methods</B></P> <P>Using 869 colon and rectal cancer cases within the Nurses' Health Study and Health Professionals Follow-up Study, we assessed the prognostic association of postdiagnosis 25(OH)D score [derived from diet and lifestyle variables to predict plasma 25(OH)D level] in strata of levels of histopathologic lymphocytic reaction. The Cox proportional hazards regression model was adjusted for potential confounders, including microsatellite instability, CpG island methylator phenotype, LINE-1 methylation, <I>PTGS2</I> (cyclooxygenase-2) expression and <I>KRAS</I>, <I>BRAF</I> and <I>PIK3CA</I> mutations.</P> <P><B>Results</B></P> <P>The association of postdiagnosis 25(OH)D score with colorectal cancer-specific mortality differed by levels of peritumoural lymphocytic reaction (<I>p</I> <SUB>interaction</SUB> = 0.001). Multivariable-adjusted mortality hazard ratios for a quintile-unit increase of 25(OH)D score were 0.69 [95% confidence interval (CI), 0.54–0.89] in cases with negative/low peritumoural lymphocytic reaction, 1.08 (95% CI, 0.93–1.26) in cases with intermediate peritumoural reaction and 1.25 (95% CI, 0.75–2.09) in cases with high peritumoural reaction. The survival association of the 25(OH)D score did not significantly differ by Crohn's-like lymphoid reaction, intratumoural periglandular reaction or tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes.</P> <P><B>Conclusions</B></P> <P>The association between the 25(OH)D score and colorectal cancer survival is stronger for carcinomas with lower peritumoural lymphocytic reaction. Our results suggesting interactive effects of vitamin D and immune response may contribute to personalised dietary and lifestyle intervention strategies.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> The survival association of vitamin D is stronger in cancer with fewer lymphocytes. </LI> <LI> Vitamin D and peritumoural lymphocytes interact to modify cancer progression. </LI> <LI> Vitamin D may exert anti-tumour immune-enhancing effects. </LI> <LI> Peritumoural lymphocytic reaction may be a biomarker for benefits from vitamin D. </LI> <LI> Our data support immunomodulatory lifestyle interventions for cancer patients. </LI> </UL> </P>

        Structural forms of state political power and the pattern of lives in ancient times are inextricably linked to the theocracy. This paper is presented Emperor -God and its identity attribute, sphere of competence, role that plays in the ancient and primitive faith. The paper explores the vital role that theocracy and its discourse construction played in the process of demystification. As for the identity of Di, on the basis of analysis previous study, we think that there are three kinds of Di in Religious Concepts during the Spring and Autumn period -God, Emperors in Yin Dynasty and characters in classical myths. The first two are inherited ideas from Yin Dynasty; the last is represented by “Five Emperors”, which starts from the Spring and Autumn period, and embodies the political requirements of unification different countries after Emperor Ping’s of Zhou, who moved it capital to the East. As for the Di’s sphere of competence and its changing trend, according to the interpretation of ancient documents and further investigation, we can conclude a clear overall clue in this paper. During the period of the Yin Dynasty (it is also known as Shang or Yin-Shang Dynasty), the Western Zhou Dynasty and the Spring and Autumn, from the view of primitive religious belief, Emperor Wen Wuang (or ancestral kings) is an agent or a performer of God that blesses the world. There are two changes in Di’s sphere of competence: first, Di has some unprecedented competence that it is Di’s right to allow or permit the action plan from the ancestors of the royal and the noble; second, Di’s sphere of competence hardly involves nature and living matters. The way which Di intervenes social activities in tribes tends to be at macro level. The power of Di imposes the clan’s fate rather than the fate of his own. Nevertheless the Di’s sphere of competence is not the same as before, people in Zhou Dynasty never neglect its donating competence for their lives. As a most important subject under discussion, the role of theocracy in the historical development process should be highlighted and paid much attention. We tried to discuss the issue in the view of demystification theory that was put forward by Max Weber. By its divinity and authority in that time, Di becomes a vital bond between all different vassal states, which are aligned with another one or more state. So to some extent, Di plays the role of maintaining the political stability. During the period of Yin-Shang Dynasty and the Spring and Autumn, the role that Di plays in the process of communicating between God and the men evolved from the person to carry out God’s order to the person who set up regulations and laws to the person who experience important events or changes as a witness. With the declining of theocracy power and rising of human rights, the character of Di becomes fresh and alive. The attitude towards God has gradually changed from fear to being respectful. There even appears some kind of integrity that indicates the value principle of equal relationship. Taking integrity as a moral norm that should be abided by in the activities that is held to worship their ancestors and the gods embodies that the God status decline in ancient people’s concept. Along with declining of the theocracy, clergies’ professional knowledge and skill are no longer monopolized by clergies. Most of so-called Junzis (an important class of public intellectuals in the Spring and Autumn period) have the knowledge and skill of clergies’, by which they can assist their superiors to gain people’s trust. Whence, Junzis frequently quote recordation in the written documents or legends about Di. The literary quotation is often preferred by Junzis at that time and it helps Junzis to gain discourse. It helps Junzis to expound their ideas and ideals in writing for the society. It also provides convenience to realize their ideology by interpretation the ancient classical texts. 先秦時代 정치권력의 조직양식과 고대 사람들의 생활 방식은 종종 神權과 긴밀하게 연결되어 관계를 맺고 있다. 본 논문은 春秋시기의 帝(上帝)가 갖는 신분적 속성, 직권범위 및 이전 사람들의 신앙에서의 역할에 대해서 토의하고, 이를 통해 神權과 그 언어구조가 각성과정에 미치는 중요한 작용을 밝혔다. 春秋時期 신앙관념 가운데 “帝”라는 글자가 붙은 신령 또는 숭배대상은 세종류로 나눌 수 있는데, 바로 上帝와 殷代의 先王들과 신화 속의 인물이다. 앞의 둘은 殷代의 관념과 서로 이어지는 개념이고, 후자는 “五帝”로 대표되며, 춘추시기에 처음으로 출현하여, 주나라 平王의 東遷 이후 “協和万邦”이라는 정치적 필요에 따라 구현된 것이다.

        Regulation of BaTiO3 ceramics’ electrical properties by varying Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3 dopants

        The piezoelectricity of BaTiO3 (BT) ceramics could be effectively regulated by Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3 (NBT) compounds, and themechanism is still controversial. In this work, BT-xNBT ceramics with various NBT contents (x) were synthesized by aconventional solid-state sintering process. The characteristic of phase, cross-section morphology, permittivity, ferroelectricity,and piezoelectricity were fully explored by some advanced test equipment. With an increment of x, the ceramics possessed ahigh densification with a sole tetragonal phase, the diffused phase transition and relaxor ferroelectricity enhanced firstly andthen receded. The inherent ferroelectricity and large strain of NBT materials under an electric field were deemed as thereasons for the increased ferroelectricity and piezoelectric coefficients with excessive x, respectively. Moreover, influences ofimpurity phases, fine grains, internal stress, etc. on the electrical properties were also discussed. This work provides a novelstrategy to regulate BT-based lead-free piezoelectric ceramics.

        Characteristics and Causes of Extreme Rainfall Induced by Binary Tropical Cyclones over China

        Binary tropical cyclones (BTC) often bring disastrous rainfall to China. From the viewpoint of the extreme of the BTC maximum daily rainfall, the characteristics of BTC extreme rainfall (BTCER) during 1960–2018 are analyzed, using daily rainfall data; and some representative large-scale mean flows, in which the associated BTCs are embedded, are analyzed. Results show that the frequency of BTCER shows a decreasing trend [−0.49 (10 yr)−1] and is mainly distributed within the BTC heavy rainstorm interval (100 mm≤ BTCER <250 mm). BTCER occurs mostly from July to September with a peak in August. Three BTCER typical regions— Minbei, the Pearl River Delta (PRD), and Taiwan—are identified according to the clustering of stations with high BTCER frequency and large BTCER. A further analysis of the 850-hPa BTC composite horizontal wind and water vapor flux over the PRD region shows the existence of two water vapor transport channels, which transport water vapor to the western tropical cyclone. In the first of these channels, the transport takes place via the southwest monsoon, which accounts for 58% of the total moisture, and an easterly flow associated with eastern tropical cyclone accounts for the remaining 42%.         Social Factors Influencing the Choice of Bicycle: Difference Analysis among Private Bike, Public Bike Sharing and Free-Floating Bike Sharing in Kunming, China

        The emergence of free-floating bike sharing (FFBS) has made essential changes in urban bicycle travel. In order to explore the differences of travel behavior among private bicycle (PB), public bicycle sharing (PBS) and FFBS, a survey was conducted in Kunming, China in 2018. Firstly, the differences of travel characteristics among these three modes were analyzed based on 522 valid questionnaires. Then, a multinomial logistic model was applied to explore the influential factors among them. The results show that: 1) PB and FFBS are more attractive for long-distance travel enthusiasts compared with PBS, PB is rarely used for transfer in suburbs while FFBS is the most desirable in connecting other travel modes. The theft problem and high maintenance costs are main obstacles for PB. 2) The elderly, high-income and non-student groups in inflexible travel activities show a preference for PBS, while the young, low-income and student groups in flexible travel demands have a tendency towards FFBS. 3) PB and PBS imped the use of FFBS to a certain extent, while PB seems to have less impact on PBS. 4) FFBS is desirable in temporary travel demand while PBS is more preferable in fixed demand. Interestingly, residents with registered permanent residence tend to use PBS while those without registered permanent residence prefer FFBS. Finally, several management strategies and policy recommendations were proposed for the government and FFBS enterprises to improve the management of bicycles.

        Purification and characterization of a novel antinociceptive peptide from venom of Agkistrodon halys Pallas

        Venom of Agkistrodon halys Pallas can controlsevere pain such as cancer pain and neuropathic pain, but itis made up of complicated components. Aim of this studyis to separate major analgesic fraction from venom ofA. halys Pallas, and to reveal its biochemical and pharmacologicalproperties. Three steps with ion exchangecolumn first and molecular sieve columns next were usedto separate and purify the fractions of venom. Analgesiceffects were evaluated by hot plate tests and writhing testsin mice. The molecular weight (MW), isoelectric point,amino acid sequence, purity were respectively determinedby SDS-PAGE electrophoresis, isoelectric focusing,Edman degradation and HPLC. The dependence and tolerancewere observed by withdrawal test in rats, andanalgesic effects were observed in mice during 7 daysadministration. Fourteen fractions were obtained by separation;the best analgesic fraction named Pallanalgesinwas selected by ED50 and LD50. It had single band inelectrophoresis, relative purity 92.16 %, MW 16.6 kDa,isoelectric point 8.8, and former sequence of ten aminoacids H-L-L-Q-F-R-K-M-I-K. It showed significant analgesiceffect without tolerance and dependence. As a novelanalgesic, Pallanalgesin has been found to explain thefunction of venom of A. halys Pallas on severe pain controlin traditional uses.

        Simultaneously photocatalytic removal of Cr(VI) and metronidazole by asynchronous cross-linked modified sodium alginate

        Conventional photocatalysts for environmental applications are mainly transitional metal compounds orprecious metal nanoparticles, which suffer from weak pollutant adsorption performance, thus limitedtheir applications for high concentrated wastewaters. In this study, asynchronous cross-linked triethylenetetraminemodified sodium alginate (CFTS) was used as photocatalyst for the simultaneouslycatalytic degradation of Cr(VI) and metronidazole (MNZ). Experimental results suggested that asynchronouscross-linking and triethylenetetramine modification have dramatically enhanced the chemicalstability as well as the adsorption and photocatalytic behavior of the material. The grafted amino functionalgroups and cross-linked Fe3+ ions can promote the rapid separation and transfer of electrons, thusreducing the recombination rate of photo-generated electron-hole pairs. The optimum removal rate of Cr(VI) has reached 99.5 % and MNZ can be completely removed within 20 and 30 min at pH 1.0 under UVlight irradiation, respectively. The removal mechanism of Cr(VI) by CFTS is the synergistic effect of electrostaticadsorption and photocatalytic reduction, while photocatalytic oxidation dominated the degradationprocess of MNZ. Moreover, the removal efficiency can be enhanced in the binary solution ofthese two pollutants due to the utilization of photo generated electron-hole pairs, which provides newpathways in the treatment of complicated pharmaceutical and domestic sewage wastewaters.

        Structural Response of an Extra-Wide Concrete Self-Anchored Suspension Bridge under Static Vehicle Loads: Testing and Numerical Simulations

        The finite element (FE) analysis by ANSYS software based on field test was used to study the structural performance of an extra-wide concrete self-anchored suspension bridge under static vehicle loads. The longitudinal, transverse and vertical stresses of the extra-wide girder were analyzed, and the changing criteria of girder stresses induced by vehicle loads were presented. Additionally, the effects of the shear lag on extra-wide box girders were investigated. The results showed that the maximum shear lag coefficient was 1.89 at the junction of bottom plate and outer web at the middle of midspan. Moreover, the non-uniformity of cable force is perceptible under eccentric load. Furthermore, an optimization measure for comparable bridges and essential health monitoring locations were outlined.

        Buckling behavior of functionally graded porous plates integrated with laminated composite faces sheets

        In this work, lightweight sandwich plates consisting of a functionally graded porous (FGP) core and two laminated composite face sheets resting on elastic foundation have been proposed. Three different profiles are considered for the distributions of porosities along core thickness. The main aim of this paper is the investigation of the buckling behavior of the proposed porous sandwich plates (PSPs) by reporting their critical mechanical loads and their corresponding mode shapes. A finite element method (FEM) based on first order shear deformation theories (FSDT) is developed to discretize governing equations for the buckling behavior of the proposed sandwich plates. The effects of porosity dispersion and volume, the numbers and angles of laminated layers, sandwich plate geometrical dimensions, elastic foundation coefficients, loading and boundary conditions are studied. The results show that the use of FGP core can offer a PSP with half weight core and only 5% reduction in critical buckling loads. Moreover, stacking sequences with only ±45 orientation fibers offer the highest values of buckling loads.
