        A Reliability Evaluation Model for the Power Devices Used in Power Converter Systems Considering the Effect of the Different Time Scales of the Wind Speed Profile

        This paper presents a reliability assessment model for the power semiconductors used in wind turbine power converters. In this study, the thermal loadings at different timescales of wind speed are considered. First, in order to address the influence of long-term thermal cycling caused by variations in wind speed, the power converter operation state is partitioned into different phases in terms of average wind speed and wind turbulence. Therefore, the contributions can be considered separately. Then, in regards to the reliability assessment caused by short-term thermal cycling, the wind profile is converted to a wind speed distribution, and the contribution of different wind speeds to the final failure rate is accumulated. Finally, the reliability of an actual power converter semiconductor for a 2.5 MW wind turbine is assessed, and the failure rates induced by different timescale thermal behavior patterns are compared. The effects of various parameters such as cut-in, rated, cut-out wind speed on the failure rate of power devices are also analyzed based on the proposed model.

        Alterations of oral microbiota in Chinese children with viral encephalitis and/or viral meningitis

        The role of oral microbiota in viral encephalitis and/or viral meningitis (VEVM) remains unclear. In this hospital-based, frequency-matched study, children with clinically diagnosed VEVM (n = 68) and those with other diseases (controls, n = 68) were recruited. Their oral swab samples were collected and the oral microbiota was profiled using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The oral microbiota of children with VEVM exhibited different beta diversity metrics (unweighted UniFrac distance: P < 0.001, R2 = 0.025, Bray-curtis dissimilarity: P = 0.045, R2 = 0.011, and Jaccard dissimilarity: P < 0.001, R2 = 0.017) and higher relative abundances of taxa identified by Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) with effect size (Enterococcus, Pedobacter, Massilia, Prevotella_9, Psychrobacter, Butyricimonas, Bradyrhizobium, etc., LDA scores > 2.0) when compared with the control group. The higher pathway abundance of steroid hormone biosynthesis predicted by oral microbiota was suggested to be linked to VEVM (q = 0.020). Further, a model based on oral microbial traits showed good predictive performance for VEVM with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.920 (95% confidence interval: 0.834–1.000). Similar results were also obtained between children with etiologically diagnosed VEVM (n = 43) and controls (n = 68). Our preliminary study identified VEVM-specific oral microbial traits among children, which can be effective in the diagnosis of VEVM.

        Synthesis of Dithiolopyrrolone Derivatives and Their Leukocyte-Increasing Activities

        In search of new antileukopenia agents, twenty dithiolopyrrolone derivatives were synthesized and evaluated for their leukocyte-increasing activities in normal mice. Among the synthesized compounds 4-23, compounds 5 and 6 showed significant leukocyte-increasing activity ( p < 0.01), and compounds 4, 9 and 16 had a moderate effect ( p < 0.05). Compound 5 also displayed stronger leukocyte-increasing activity than that of the positive recombinant human granulocyte colony stimulating factor (rhG-CSF). Above all, compound 5 would be a potential antileukopenia agent which deserved further research.

        A Random Deflected Subgradient Algorithm for Energy-Efficient Real-time Multicast in Wireless Networks

        In this work, we consider the optimization problem of minimizing energy consumption for real-time multicast over wireless multi-hop networks. Previously, a distributed primal-dual subgradient algorithm was used for finding a solution to the optimization problem. However, the traditional subgradient algorithms have drawbacks in terms of i) sensitivity to iteration parameters; ii) need for saving previous iteration results for computing the optimization results at the current iteration. To overcome these drawbacks, using a joint network coding and scheduling optimization framework, we propose a novel distributed primal-dual Random Deflected Subgradient (RDS) algorithm for solving the optimization problem. Furthermore, we derive the corresponding recursive formulas for the proposed RDS algorithm, which are useful for practical applications. In comparison with the traditional subgradient algorithms, the illustrated performance results show that the proposed RDS algorithm can achieve an improved optimal solution. Moreover, the proposed algorithm is stable and robust against the choice of parameter values used in the algorithm.

        Genetic algorithm‐based content distribution strategy for F‐RAN architectures

        Fog radio access network (F‐RAN) architectures provide markedly improved performance compared to conventional approaches. In this paper, an efficient genetic algorithm‐based content distribution scheme is proposed that improves the throughput and reduces the transmission delay of a F‐RAN. First, an F‐RAN system model is presented that includes a certain number of randomly distributed fog access points (F‐APs) that cache popular content from cloud and other sources. Second, the problem of efficient content distribution in F‐RANs is described. Third, the details of the proposed optimal genetic algorithm‐based content distribution scheme are presented. Finally, simulation results are presented that show the performance of the proposed algorithm rapidly approaches the optimal throughput. When compared with the performance of existing random and exhaustive algorithms, that of the proposed method is demonstrably superior.

        Optimization of ultrasonic assisted membrane strategy for saponins from Gynostemma Pentaphyllum with response surface methodology

        Gynostemma pentaphyllum saponin has a variety of biological properties. Classic separation methods of saponin, such as resin absorption and preparative chromatography are limited by environmental pollution and high cost. In the study, ultrasonic assisted membrane separation was firstly used to purify saponin from Gynostemma pentaphyllum. Total proteins, polysaccharides, saponin, gypenoside A and rutin were selected as indexes to optimize the pretreatment and purification parameters by response surface methodology. The fitted models were significant (p < 0.05) and the optimal conditions were: (1) removing protein and polysaccharides by MWCO 10,000 Da, ultrasonic power 400 W and pH 7.8; (2) separation flavonoids from saponin by MWCO 1000 Da, ultrasonic power 300 W and pH 7.9. The difficulty in separating saponin from flavonoids was solved by releasing flavonoids from micelles with ultrasonic assisted membrane method. The saponin content in Gynostemma pentaphyllum extracts reached 82.81%, which was more than four times of that obtained with resin adsorption method. The protective effect of saponins on SH-SY5Y cells injury induced by H2O2 was better than that of Gynostemma pentaphyllum extracts. The study suggested that ultrasonic assisted membrane method would be widely applied in the preparation of food materials.

      • Accurate Stitching for Polygonal Surfaces

        Various applications, such as mesh composition and model repair, ask for a natural stitching for polygonal surfaces. Unlike the existing algorithms, we make full use of the information from the two feature lines to be stitched up, and present an accurate stitching method for polygonal surfaces, which minimizes the error between the feature lines. Given two directional polylines as the feature lines on polygonal surfaces, we modify the general placement method for points matching and arrive at a closed-form solution for optimal rotation and translation between the polylines. Following calculating out the stitching line, a local surface optimization method is designed and employed for postprocess in order to gain a natural blending of the stitching region.

        Differential Expression Profiles of Alternaria alternate Genes in Response to Carbonyl Sulfide Fumigation

        Carbonyl sulfide (COS) is a new fumigant used in phytosanitary treatments. It was developed as a potential alternative to methyl bromide, which is being phased out because of its ozone-depletion properties. To understand the molecular and cellular mechanisms occurring in fungal pathogens in response to COS fumigation, we cloned 510 cDNA fragments of Alternaria alternata (Fr.) Keissler genes that are differentially expressed; these genes were cloned using suppression subtractive hybridization. Changes in the levels of transcripts of 79 fragments were confirmed by microarray analysis and qRT-PCR. Further homology search revealed that they are highly homologous to 41 genes of other fungi, which were related to general metabolism, growth and division, defense, cellular transport, and signal transduction. These results provide an overview of differential expression profiles of A. alternata genes following COS treatment and some new clues about the mechanism of COS fungitoxicity.

        Evaluation of the Performance of Structured Mixed Packing and Inert Packing Materials in Toluene Biotrickle-filtration

        Packing materials play a key role in waste gas treatment. Organic and inert packing materials have their disadvantages, which may be minimized by mixed packing. In this study, various operating conditions were applied to evaluate the performance of structured mixed packing and inert packing materials in toluene biotricklefiltration. Four biotrickle filters were packed with structured mixed packing materials, namely, ceramic pall rings,ceramic rashig rings, and lava rock. Their toluene removal capacity was studied for 217 day using a laboratory-scale reaction under various operating conditions. The key elimination capacity (removal efficiency > 95%) ranking of the biotrickle filters was as follows: Structured mixed packing (306.20 ± 7.90 g/m^3/h) > pall ring (156.71 ± 7.84 g/m^3/h)> rashig ring (153.31 ± 6.14 g/m^3/h) > lava rock (150.32 ±9.19 g/m^3/h). The structured mixed packing and inert packing resulted in excellent toluene-degrading biofilter performance under long-term operation. The structured mixed packing provided a more rapid startup rate and better process robustness than the inert packing did. The biotrickle filter with mixed packing materials had a high elimination capacity which makes it suitable for various real-life applications, whereas the capability of the inert packing material was more suitable for treating a steady low toluene load.
