        Comparison of Melanoma Subtypes among Korean Patients by Morphologic Features and Ultraviolet Exposure

        Background: Genetic alterations have been identified in melanomas according to different levels of sun exposure. Whereas the conventional morphology-based classification provides a clue for tumor growth and prognosis, the new classification by genetic alterations offers a basis for targeted therapy. Objective: The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the biological behavior of melanoma subtypes and compare the two classifications in the Korean population. Methods: A retrospective chart review was performed on patients found to have malignant melanoma in Severance Hospital from 2005 to 2012. Age, sex, location of the tumor, histologic subtype, tumor depth, ulceration, lymph node invasion, visceral organ metastasis, and overall survival were evaluated. Results: Of the 206 cases, the most common type was acral melanoma (n=94, 45.6%), followed by nonchronic sun damage-induced melanoma (n=43, 20.9%), and mucosal melanoma (n=40, 19.4%). Twenty-one patients (10.2%) had the chronic sun-damaged type, whereas eight patients (3.9%) had tumors of unknown primary origin. Lentigo maligna melanoma was newly classified as the chronic sun-damaged type, and acral lentiginous melanoma as the acral type. More than half of the superficial spreading melanomas were newly grouped as nonchronic sun-damaged melanomas, whereas nodular melanoma was rather evenly distributed. Conclusion: The distribution of melanomas was largely similar in both the morphology-based and sun exposure-based classifications, and in both classifications, mucosal melanoma had the worst 5-year survival owing to its tumor thickness and advanced stage at the time of diagnosis.         Effects of Chungkookjang Extract on Growth Hormone Secretion from GH3 Mouse Pituitary Cell and Growth Hormone Receptor Signaling Pathway

        뇌하수체 전엽에서 성장호르몬의 생산과 분비는 세포의 분열과 분화 그리고 이동을 조절하는 몇 가지 천연물질에 의해 유도된다. 따라서 발효과정을 통해 제조된 청국장이 성장호르몬의 대사에 미치는 영향을 평가하기 위하여 성장호르몬 분비능과 반응성을 뇌하수체 세포와 성장호르몬 표적세포에서 관찰하였다. 6가지 종류의 콩 품종으로 제조된 청국장 추출물 중에서, 대원, 대풍, 태광의 3종류 청국장 추출물은 5 mg/ml 농도에서 GH3 세포로부터 성장호르몬의 분비를 촉진하였다. 비록 세포 생존능은 이러한 추출물에 의해 유의적인 변화가 유도되지 않았으나, 성장호르몬의 분비량은 청국장 추출물의 농도에 의존적으로 증가하였다. 또한 성장호르몬의 표적 기관으로부터 유래된 MG63과 HepG2 세포는 GH3로부터 수집된 조건적 배양액에 의해 유의적으로 활성화되었다. 또한 이러한 세포에서 STAT5 발현은 대원 청국장 추출물을 처리 후, 15분 혹은 30분부터 세포질에서 유의적으로 증가하였으며, p-STAT5는 핵에서 30분 혹은 60분부터 증가하였다. 따라서 이러한 결과는 3가지 종류의 청국장 추출물은 성장호르몬의 분비를 촉진시키며, 청국장의 조건적 배양액은 성장호르몬 표적세포에서 신호전달을 유도함을 제시하고 있다. The production and secretion of growth hormone (GH) in the anterior pituitary gland can be induced by several natural products to control cell proliferation, differentiation, and migration. To investigate whether Chungkookjang (CKJ) produced by the fermentation process affects GH-related metabolism, the secretion and the response of GH were observed in pituitary cells and GH target cells. Among six CKJs manufactured by different strains of glycine max, only three CKJs, including Daewon (DW), Daepung (DP), and Taegwang (TG), induced GH secretion from GH3 cells at 5.0 mg/ml concentration. There were no significant changes detected in the viability of any of the cells treated with these CKJs. In addition, the increase in GH secretion from the GH3 cells was dependent on the concentration of the three types of CKJs. The proliferation of cell lines, including MG63 and HepG2 cells, that originated from those derived from the GH target organs was significantly activated by treatment with the GH-containing conditional medium (GCM) harvested from the three CKJ-treated GH3 cells, although their induction rate was different from each other. In these cells, p-STAT5 was maximally translocated into the nucleus of MG63 cells 30 min after DW treatment, while it was translocated in HepG2 cells at 60 min. These results suggest that these three types of CKJ could enhance the secretion of GH, as well as the GCM-derived response, in the two target organs.

        Effects of a High-Intensity Interval Physical Exercise Program on Cognition, Physical Performance, and Electroencephalogram Patterns in Korean Elderly People: A Pilot Study

        Background and Purpose: The effects of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) interventions on functional brain changes in older adults remain unclear. This preliminary study aimed to explore the effect of physical exercise intervention (PEI), including HIIT, on cognitive function, physical performance, and electroencephalogram patterns in Korean elderly people. Methods: We enrolled six non-dementia participants aged >65 years from a community health center. PEI was conducted at the community health center for 4 weeks, three times/week, and 50 min/day. PEI, including HIIT, involved aerobic exercise, resistance training (muscle strength), flexibility, and balance. Wilcoxon signed rank test was used for data analysis. Results: After the PEI, there was improvement in the 30-second sit-to-stand test result (16.2±7.0 times vs. 24.8±5.5 times, p=0.027), 2-minute stationary march result (98.3±27.2 times vs. 143.7±36.9 times, p=0.027), T-wall response time (104.2±55.8 seconds vs.71.0±19.4 seconds, p=0.028), memory score (89.6±21.6 vs. 111.0±19.1, p=0.028), executive function score (33.3±5.3 vs. 37.0±5.1, p=0.046), and total Literacy Independent Cognitive Assessment score (214.6±30.6 vs. 241.6±22.8, p=0.028). Electroencephalography demonstrated that the beta power in the frontal region was increased, while the theta power in the temporal region was decreased (all p<0.05). Conclusions: Our HIIT PEI program effectively improved cognitive function, physical fitness, and electroencephalographic markers in elderly individuals; thus, it could be beneficial for improving functional brain activity in this population.

        적외선 체열촬영을 이용한 온천요법에 관한 임상적 연구

        Objectives :The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of balneotherapy on the changes of DITI(digital infrared thermal imaging). Methods :This study was carried out on 27 patients. They went through balneotherapy with high pressure under water shower(15 min.) and whole body bathing in neutral or hot water between 32 to 40 ℃(15 min.). DITI was measured at before and after the treatment. And then the data was analyzed. Results :1. In cold hypersensitivity of hands group, temperature on PC8 rose and difference between LU4 and PC8 decreased(p<0.05)(Fig. 1, Table Ⅱ). 2. In cold hypersensitivity of feet group, temperature on LR3 rose and difference between ST32 and LR3 decreased(p<0.05)(Fig. 2, Table Ⅱ). 3. In shangrexiahanzheng(上熱下寒證) group, there were no significant changes on CV17, CV6 and difference between CV17 and CV6(Fig. 3, Table Ⅱ). Conclusions :These results demonstrated that balneotherapy has clinical effects on cold hypersensitivity of hands and feet. And further studies are required to apply the balneotherapy in order to cure various diseases in the future.

        질소산화물 제거를 위한 디스크형 바나디아 촉매담지 세라믹필터의 특성

        The performance of disk-type catalytic fillers impregnated by TiO₂ or TiO₂-3Al₂O₃ㆍ2SiO₂ supports and V₂O_(5), catalyst was evaluated for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO with ammonia as a reductant. XRD, FT-IR, BET and SEM were used to characterize the catalytic filters prepared in this work. Optimal V₂O_(5) loading and reaction temperature for V₂O_(5)/TiO₂ catalytic filters were 3~6wt.% and 350~400℃ at GHSV 14.300hr-¹ in the presence of oxygen, respectively. With increasing the V₂O_(5) loading from 0.5 to 6 wt.%, NO conversion increased from 24 to 96% at 400℃ and 14.300 hr-¹, and maintained at 80% over in the V₂O_(5) loading range of 3~6 wt.% and then dropped at V₂O_(5) loading of 7wt.% over. In comparing V₂O_(5)/TiO₂ and V₂O_(5)/TiO₂-3Al₂O₃ㆍ2SiO₂ catalytic fillers, which have same 3 wt.% V₂O_(5) loading, the V₂O_(5)/TiO₂-3Al₂O₃ㆍ2SiO₂ catalytic filter showed higher activity than V₂O_(5)/TiO₂ catalytic filter, but higher differential pressure drops owing to its low air permeability.

        디스크형 산화구리 촉매담지 세라믹필터의 제조와 물성

        A catalyst with CuO ceramic filter for simultaneous treatment of dust and HAP was prepared and characterized. Catalytic ceramic tilter can not only potentially achieve the substantial savings in energy but provide with effective optimization and integration of process for simultaneous removal of S0₂ㆍ NOx and particulates from flue gases. Catalytic ceramic filters remove simultaneously particulates on exterior surface of filters and reduce NO to N₂and H₂O by SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) process. Preparation of catalyst impregnated ceramic filter with disk shape (Ψ50) follow the processing of alumino-silicate ceramic filter, support impregnation and catalyst impregnation(copper oxide). Preparation routes of alumino-silicate catalyst carrier suitable for production of catalytic filters practically were studied and developed using the sol-gel and colloidal processing, homogeneous precipitation and impregnation method. Characterization of the catalyst, catalyst carrier catalytic filter materials have been performed the using various techniques such as BET, XRD, TGA, SEM. Combination of the sol-gel and colloidal processing and impregnation method is recommended to prepare catalyst carriers economically for catalytic filter applications.

      • 여재의 개선에 따른 유기물 제거효율 및 질산화 비교

        Where control of algal growths in the receiving water is necessary to protect beneficial uses, removal or reduction of nitrogen in wastewater prior to charge may be desirable. An object of this study is development of nitrification(conversion TKN to nitrate) rate in domestic wastewater treatment. A bench scale reactor used in this study has reused media(SWPP media). This study was conducted to investigate the performance and bioflim characteristics of modified media(RUN 2) in comparison with conventional media(RUN 1) on wastewater treatment system. Influent BOD, COD and TKN concentration were ranged 254.1 to 270.4 mg/L, 473.0 to 498.4 mg/L and 19.3 to 21.4 mg/L, respectively. During operating time for 116 day, organic loading rates were 0.254 to 1.044 kgBOD/㎥/day and nitrogen loading rates were 19 to 86 gTKN/㎥day. The results were as follows ; Nitrogen removal efficiency was 22.3, 36.1, 90.4 and 95.8% in RUN 1 and 25.2, 75.1, 95.1 and 96.7% in RUN 2. Effluent NO₃-N concentration in RUN1 and RUN2 were 0∼15.54mg/L, 0.09∼15.99 mg/L, respectively.

      • 수질감시를 위한 조류의 형광성과 DO변화의 금속독성 평가

        Ecotoxicological pollutants are monitored by biological monitoring system combining or substituting physical chemical and mechanical system in waste water discharge monitoring for the river water quality control and water supply monitoring for purification of water. In spite of many studies on development of water quality auto-monitoring to solve these problems, informations about selection of test species, test conditions, and ecotoicological characteristics are not enough to apply to practical monitoring. In this study, Selenastrum capricornutum is recommended to water quality monitoring species and the standardized test methods and conditions are proposed. Using Chlorella fusca, Chlorella sacchrophila, Scenedesmus basiliensis, Scenedesmus qua-dricauda, Selenastrum capricornutum, Microcystis aeruginosa and Anabaena flos-aquae fluorescence responses by metal toxicity are analyzed to prove the sensitivity. Fluorescence response of S. capricornutum is the most stable among examined algae. Toxic response is sensitive at low algal concentration, stable and sensitive between algal con-centration 20 and 150.

      • 안인 군선강의 이화학적 수질

        1993년 2월부터 9월까지 4회에 걸쳐 명주군 군선강의 8개 지점을 대상으로 하여 수질 조사를 하였다. 수질 평가를 위하여서는 수온, pH, 용존 산소량, 화학적 산소 요구량, 생물학적 산소 요구량, 부유 물질, 암모니아성 질소, 아질산성 질소, 질산성 질소, 인산염 인, 계면 활성제, 대장균등을 측정 하였다. 본 하천의 상류쪽은 산성을 나타냈으며 하류쪽으로 갈수록 알카리성으로 나타났다. 또한 대장균수는 상대적으로 작았다. 그 원인은 광산 폐수때문인 것으로 나타났으며 하류쪽으로 갈수록 해수와 혼합되기 때문인 것으로 나타났다. The water quality was monitored from February through September, 1993 for four times on the eight sites of Gunseon Stream, Myungju. To monitor the water quality, water temperature, pH, Dissolved oxygen, Chemical oxygen demand, Biochemical oxygen demand, Suspended solid, Ammonia-nitrogen. Nitrite-nitrogen, Nitrate-nitrogen, Inorganic phosphate, Sulfactant, and E. coli MPN were chosen as parameters. The upstream was more acidic; downstream was more alkalic. The E. coli MPN value was relatively low due to the mine pollutant and seawater mixture.
