Non-fullerene acceptors have recently attracted tremendous interest because of their potential as alternatives to fullerene derivatives in bulk heterojunction organic solar cells. However, the power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) have lagged far behind those of the polymer/fullerene system, mainly because of the low fill factor (FF) and photocurrent. Here we report a novel perylene bisimide (PBI) acceptor, SdiPBI-Se, in which selenium atoms were introduced into the perylene core. With a well-established wide-band-gap polymer (PDBT-T1) as the donor, a high efficiency of 8.4% with an unprecedented high FF of 70.2% is achieved for solution-processed non-fullerene organic solar cells. Efficient photon absorption, high and balanced charge carrier mobility, and ultrafast charge generation processes in PDBT-T1:SdiPBI-Se films account for the high photovoltaic performance. Our results suggest that non-fullerene acceptors have enormous potential to rival or even surpass the performance of their fullerene counterparts.

Reliability-based design optimization (RBDO) has been receiving increasing attention for achieving high safety and reliability in engineering design. Sequential optimization and reliability assessment (SORA), as one of the efficient single-loop methods, decouples an RBDO problem into sequential deterministic optimization and reliability analysis. An enhanced SORA (ESORA) method is proposed with the aim of further improving the computational efficiency for RBDO, considering both cases of constant and varying variances of random design inputs while keeping the single-loop framework. Vehicle side impact example is used to test and compare the efficiency of the proposed method with existing approaches.

Reliability based design optimization (RBDO) has been widely implemented in engineering practices for high safety and reliability. It is an important challenge to improve computational efficiency. Sequential optimization and reliability assessment (SORA) has made great efforts to improve computational efficiency by decoupling a RBDO problem into sequential deterministic optimization and reliability analysis as a single-loop method. In this paper, in order to further improve computational efficiency and extend the application of the current SORA method, an enhanced SORA (ESORA) is proposed by considering constant and varying variances of random design variables while keeping the sequential framework. Some mathematical examples and an engineering case are given to illustrate the proposed method and validate the efficiency.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to compare the survival and toxicities in cervical esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (CESCC) treated by concurrent chemoradiothrapy with either three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3D-CRT) or intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) techniques. Materials and Methods A total of 112 consecutive CESCC patients were retrospectively reviewed. 3D-CRT and IMRT groups had been analyzed by propensity score matching method, with sex, age, Karnofsky performance status, induction chemotherapy, and tumor stage well matched. The Kaplan- Meier method and Cox proportional hazards model were used for overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS). Toxicities were compared between two groups by Fisher exact test. Results With a median follow-up time of 34.9 months, the 3-year OS (p=0.927) and PFS (p=0.859) rate was 49.6% and 45.8% in 3D-CRT group, compared with 54.4% and 42.8% in IMRT group. The rates of grade ! 3 esophagitis, grade ! 2 pneumonitis, esophageal stricture, and hemorrhage were comparable between two groups, while the rate of tracheostomy dependence was much higher in IMRT group than 3D-CRT group (14.3% vs.1.8%, p=0.032). Radiotherapy technique (hazard ratio [HR], 0.09; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.01 to 0.79) and pretreatment hoarseness (HR, 0.12; 95% CI 0.02 to 0.70) were independently prognostic of tracheostomy dependence. Conclusion No survival benefits had been observed while comparing IMRT versus 3D-CRT in CESCC patients. IMRT with fraction dose escalation and pretreatment hoarseness were considered to be associated with a higher risk for tracheostomy dependence. Radiation dose escalation beyond 60 Gy should be taken into account carefully when using IMRT with hypofractionated regimen.

Background: Somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) is used widely in cloning, stem cell research, and regenerative medicine. The type of donor cells is a key factor affecting the SCNT efficiency. Objectives: This study examined whether urine-derived somatic cells could be used as donors for SCNT in pigs. Methods: The viability of cells isolated from urine was assessed using trypan blue and propidium iodide staining. The H3K9me3/H3K27me3 level of the cells was analyzed by immunofluorescence. The in vitro developmental ability of SCNT embryos was evaluated by the blastocyst rate and the expression levels of the core pluripotency factor. Blastocyst cell apoptosis was examined using a terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end-labeling assay. The in vivo developmental ability of SCNT embryos was evaluated after embryo transfer. Results: Most sow urine-derived cells were viable and could be cultured and propagated easily. On the other hand, most of the somatic cells isolated from the boar urine exhibited poor cellular activity. The in vitro development efficiency between the embryos produced by SCNT using porcine embryonic fibroblasts (PEFs) and urine-derived cells were similar. Moreover, The H3K9me3 in SCNT embryos produced from sow urine-derived cells and PEFs at the four-cell stage showed similar intensity. The levels of Oct4, Nanog, and Sox2 expression in blastocysts were similar in the two groups. Furthermore, there is a similar apoptotic level of cloned embryos produced by the two types of cells. Finally, the full-term development ability of the cloned embryos was evaluated, and the cloned fetuses from the urine-derived cells showed absorption. Conclusions: Sow urine-derived cells could be used to produce SCNT embryos.

The sex-linked balanced lethal (SLBL) strains of silkworm serve as an effective system for sex-control in silkworm. To gain comprehensive insight into the effect of one sex-linked balanced lethal gene l2, comparative proteomic analysis was carried out between the survival embryos (W +l 1 Z l 1 +l 2 ) and lethal embryos (W +l 1 Z l 1 +l 2 ) before the lethal stage. The lethal stage of l2 was confirmed by observing the typical dead embryo morphology. The two genotype embryos before lethal stage were distinguished using polymorphic simple sequence repeats (SSR) markers closely linked to l2 on the sex chromosome. Finally, 11 differentially expressed protein spots were successfully identified by MALDI-TOF/TOF mass spectrometry (MS). Among them, only 1 protein identified as heat shock protein 20.4(HSP20.4) was up-regulated in the lethal embryos, while the other 10 were down-regulated. The up-regulation of HSP20.4 suggests that there may be abnormal polypeptides produced in the lethal embryos. The gene ontology (GO)annotation indicated those down-regulated proteins are involved in important biological processes including embryo development, nucleoside metabolism, tRNA splicing, translation and protein folding. The biological pathway analysis showed that those down-regulated proteins are mainly involved in spindle assemblage and morphogenesis. Based on our results, we suggest that the l2 may be the mutant expressing abnormal polypeptides. Its expression has a negative effect on mitosis and morphogenesis processes. The death of the embryos may be caused by the accumulation of abnormal polypeptides and the handicap of cell proliferation and morphogenesis.

Purpose Little is known about combination of the circulating Epstein-Barr viral (EBV) DNA and tumor volume in prognosis of stage II nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients in the intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) era. We conducted this cohort study to evaluate the prognostic values of combining these two factors. Materials and Methods By Kaplan-Meier, we compare the differences of survival curves between 385 patients with different EBV DNA or tumor volume levels, or with the combination of two biomarkers mentioned above. Results Gross tumor volume of cervical lymph nodes (GTVnd, p < 0.001) and total tumor volume (GTVtotal, p < 0.001) were both closely related to pretreatment EBV DNA, while gross tumor volume of nasopharynx (GTVnx, p=0.047) was weakly related to EBV DNA. EBV DNA was significantly correlated with progress-free survival (PFS, p=0.005), locoregional-free survival (LRFS, p=0.039), and distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS, p=0.017), while GTVtotal, regardless of GTVnx and GTVnd, had a significant correlation with PFS and LRFS. The p-values of GTVtotal for PFS and LRFS were 0.008 and 0.001, respectively. According to GTVtotal and pretreatment EBV DNA level, patients were divided into a low-risk group (EBV DNA 0 copy/mL, GTVtotal < 30 cm3; EBV DNA 0 copy/mL, GTVtotal 30 cm3; or EBV DNA > 0 copy/mL, GTVtotal < 30 cm3) and a high-risk group (EBV DNA > 0 copy/mL, GTVtotal 30 cm3). When patients in the low-risk group were compared with those in the high-risk group, 3-year PFS (p=0.003), LRFS (p=0.010), and DMFS (p=0.031) rates were statistically significant. Conclusion Pretreatment plasma EBV DNA and tumor volume were both closely correlated with prognosis of stage II NPC patients in the IMRT era. Combination of EBV DNA and tumor volume can refine prognosis and indicate for clinical therapy.
